Chapter 18: The Power of Mama Tao
The morning breeze carried a heavy tension. Kayode stood at the edge of a quiet grove overlooking the approaching figures. From their robes, adorned with coiling serpent emblems, it was clear that these were Coiled Serpent Sect disciples. Their number was not small—more than a dozen, each radiating an aura of hostility and readiness for battle.
"They've come sooner than expected," Kayode muttered, his grip tightening on his staff.
Oba yawned from his perch on a nearby rock. "What did you expect? You embarrassed them in front of the entire city. Now they want blood."
Kayode's expression hardened as he glanced at the approaching group. A thought struck him, and his gaze darkened. "I've been fighting without proper techniques. Relying on raw strength and instinct won't cut it anymore. If I want to handle them, I need something powerful."
The system's voice chimed in, ever calm and supportive.
"You are correct, Kayode. I have a technique in the store that suits your unique style and bloodline. It is called 'Ninja Mother's Divine Slap.' This technique combines offensive and defensive stances, allowing you to summon a phantom entity to fight alongside you. At the first level, you can summon one phantom, which will increase with mastery. Its defensive ability reflects attacks back at your enemies. The cost is 100 AP. Would you like to purchase it?"
Kayode nodded without hesitation. "Yes. Let's do it."
A warm light enveloped him as the knowledge of the technique flooded his mind. He closed his eyes, absorbing the intricate patterns and stances required to execute the move. When the light faded, his body pulsed with newfound confidence.
Oba smirked. "You're smiling. What did you get this time?"
Kayode grinned. "A divine technique. Let's just say... Mama Tao is about to make her debut."
---
The Coiled Serpent Sect disciples stopped a few meters away, their leader—a man with sharp features and a vicious smirk—stepping forward.
"So, you're the one causing all this trouble," the leader sneered. "Killing our brothers, humiliating our sect. Do you have any idea what kind of death awaits you?"
Kayode remained calm, his staff resting across his shoulders. "The kind where you run away screaming?"
The disciples bristled, their Qi flaring.
"You talk big for a rogue cultivator," another disciple spat. "Let's see how long you can keep that arrogance when you're on your knees, begging for mercy."
The leader raised his hand, silencing his men. "Enough. I'll deal with him myself. Watch and learn."
He stepped forward, summoning a serpent-shaped aura that coiled around his blade. "This will be quick."
Kayode twirled his staff, his expression confident. "Not as quick as you think."
As the leader charged, Kayode centered his stance, channeling the power of his newly learned technique. His hands moved in a fluid motion, summoning a glowing phantom behind him.
The figure materialized, clad in a flowing lace gown with a vibrant scarf tied around her head. Her sharp eyes and stern expression radiated authority. It was Mama Tao, a formidable figure from Nigerian comedy lore.
The Coiled Serpent disciples froze, their faces pale with confusion. "What... what is that?"
Mama Tao raised her hand, her fingers snapping with an audible crack. Her voice, rich and commanding, echoed across the battlefield. "Who is disturbing my pikin? You think you can just come and be doing anyhow here?"
The leader hesitated, his aura faltering. "What kind of sorcery is this?"
Kayode smirked. "Meet Mama Tao. She doesn't like bullies."
Mama Tao stepped forward, her phantom presence towering over the leader. With a sharp motion, she swung her hand, releasing a slap so powerful that the air itself seemed to ripple.
The leader's face twisted in shock as the phantom slap connected, sending him flying into his disciples. He tumbled across the ground, his aura shattered.
"You dare come here with nonsense?!" Mama Tao bellowed. "You don't know who you're dealing with!"
The disciples scrambled to their feet, their fear evident. One of them launched a Qi attack, aiming it directly at Kayode.
Mama Tao's lace scarf glowed brightly, unraveling from her neck and forming a shimmering barrier. The Qi attack struck the scarf and rebounded with double the force, slamming into the disciple who had launched it. He crumpled to the ground, unconscious.
The remaining disciples backed away, their courage drained.
Kayode advanced, his voice steady. "You thought I was just a rogue cultivator. Now you know better. Leave, and tell your sect that this is what happens when they cross me."
The leader, clutching his chest, spat blood as he glared at Kayode. "You'll regret this... The sect will come for you."
Kayode pointed his staff at him. "I'll be waiting."
With that, the disciples retreated, their pride and numbers shattered.
---
As the grove fell silent, Kayode let out a breath, his body relaxing. Mama Tao's phantom faded, her parting words lingering in the air. "Next time, bring better opponents. These ones are too weak."
Oba jumped onto Kayode's shoulder, his tail flicking. "You know, I'm starting to enjoy watching you fight. That technique is something else."
Kayode grinned. "It's just the beginning. Let's see what other surprises the system has in store."
The system's voice chimed in. "Kayode, your mastery of the technique has increased. Be cautious, however. The more you use it, the more attention you may attract. Many will believe you possess a peerless treasure."
Kayode's expression darkened. "Let them think what they want. If they come, I'll deal with them."
Oba chuckled. "Spoken like a true troublemaker. Onward, then. The world is waiting."
Kayode nodded, his resolve unshaken. The path ahead was dangerous, but with his newfound power and determination, he was ready for whatever came next.
