My (Monster?) Hero Life

Chapter 89: Free For All

"As if!" Kace snorted in response.

Raven threw him a furious glance. To him, the deal was more than worth it to safeguard the lives of his crew and himself. He was concerned that Kace's little outburst would ruin the chance they were being given. In his mind, his crew looked to him to keep their best interests at the forefront of his thoughts.

A loud bang sounded in the large cave as a fire spell was fired at Tyler. Raven's head quickly swivelled to find the culprit. Standing there with a literal smoking gun in hand was Mr Thomas. Noticing his captain's furious gaze, he shrugged his shoulders.

"They would have killed us anyway. If they didn't, well for how much longer could we live as free men of the sea if they brought more of their kind through the gate? Besides, if the roles were reversed, we would have shot them in the back the moment they thought they were safe." Mr Thomas stated matter of factly.

The rest of the members of the crew began to laugh and slap him on the back. Congratulating him for something well said. The crew's faces changed from looks of hope for survival to ones of men who had resolved themselves to die as free men on their feet.

Tyler cursed the man for the small wound he had inflicted on his shoulder. With that one move, he had rallied the entire enemy side into a single cohesive unit. They clearly had only one thing on their minds. To eradicate every hero trapped in here with them or die trying.

"Get them!" Tyler roared, letting his anger get the better of him.

Phillip sighed as all hell broke loose. It could have been handled better, but at least they held the numerical advantage. His eyes scanned the crowd to get a lock on Kace. After all, out of all of their opponents, he was the one that held the most value to him.

Sarah broke out into a sprint. Aiming to lock Grugda down into a one on one. Unfortunately for her plans, another predator had already marked her as a target. Sarah was probably the fastest amongst the heroes forces which would give her an advantage against the slower Eljein.

However, as she arrived before him, a pale hand caught ahold of her wrist and slammed an open palm into her ribs. She was sent flying through the air, only coming to a halt as she crashed into a wall. She looked around in a daze completely unaware of who had intercepted her.

Her eyes widened in shock as the gorgeous face of Sophia appeared before her after flitting in her mist form. She was forced to defend herself as Sophia rapidly lunged at her with her nails that were harder than steel. One wrong move would end in her being skewered. Sophia laughed at her obvious distress.

"It's just us girls over here, so let's have some fun. Ok?" Sophia flashed her a sickenly sweet smile. Looking more like an adoring older sister than someone out to murder her.

Tyler made his way through the crowd seeking to take Raven's head as his personal trophy. Unsurprisingly Raven had the exact same idea. Now that his crew had spoken it would be a discredit to their courage to not go all out on their behalf. Although he was only a half-vampire, he still shared many of their abilities. Albeit they were weaker versions of what Sophia was capable of.

He flitted towards his opponent, who was ready for the move after catching sight of Sarah's struggles. A cage of lightning erupted around Captain Raven, trapping him in place and preventing him from reaching his target. Raven cursed Tyler's ingenuity. To come up with a countermeasure in the heat of the moment certainly marked him as gifted.

Tyler could not suppress his laughter as he controlled the cage into shrinking. Giving Raven less space to move safely from within it. As he was about to close the final distance, his spell was interrupted. A whip latched onto his forearm and pulled him off balance. Raven was glad to be released from his predicament.

"If you want the Captain you'll have to go through me!" Mr Penny roared as fire ignited within his eyes.

The regular heroes were attempting to skirt around the dangerous conflicts and attack the weaker crew members first. However, thanks to Sophia's timely intervention, Grugda was left free and clear to provide them with the support of his defensive spells.

He was glad to discover that floor had not been paved over and was made of completely natural rock. 'At least this. Time I'm not. Helpless.' He thought as created a blockade to surround the crew. Opening small holes in it for them to fire out at their assailants.

As a hero attempted to launch themselves over the top of the barricade, he came face to face with a grenade that Mr Thomas had lobbed into the air. Seeing the surprise on his victims face, he could not help but smile and wave goodbye. The grenade exploded and showered the heroes face with a chemical that had been stored within. As soon as it came into contact with air, it erupted in flames that refused to be out.

Phillip had his hands full trying to defend against the unpredictable attacks that Kace threw at him. Every time he got used to the range and movements of Kace's weapon, he would shapeshift it forcing him to learn it all over again. 'The bastard has gotten even stronger!' Phillip cursed in his mind.

Kace, on the other hand, was enjoying toying with Phillip for the moment. He was going to make him suffer for forcing him to stay on the run for a full year. Never getting a decent nights sleep. He smiled right before his throat began to glow with the familiar sight of the liquid fire building up within it...
