Chapter 4: The First Step
'Which way should I go? Hmm?'
"Well, this way."
I pointed in a random direction and started walking.
'It's not like I can know which way is right.'
(After a short while)
"Huff! Huff! Damn it! How much do I need to walk? This lousy body needs rest. I can't continue."
I leaned against a tree to rest a bit and catch my breath.
'This body is very weak, and it's just the body of a seven-year-old child.'
Small limbs, weak endurance, almost no strength, good speed—this is what I noticed about this body.
"My height is about 135 cm. Good, this body is normal; it just needs rehabilitation."
After resting a bit, I started walking again.
But after a few steps, I heard the howl of a wolf.
My whole body hair stood up, and my limbs started trembling from the cold.
"Howl! Howl!"
'Oh no.'
I started running as fast as I could because I felt something running behind me. Maybe it was my imagination, but my instinct told me to run.
'Run! Run as fast as you can.'
So I ran until I felt my legs collapsing and my lungs burning for oxygen.
"Huff! Huff!"
Suddenly, something black passed in front of me that I couldn't see, and out of fear, I tripped over a tree branch and fell to the ground.
"Ouch! That hurts. I think my right foot is twisted."
I tried to get up quickly, but to no avail. My foot couldn't stand.
"Come on! Get up. Don't fail me, body."
I grabbed a nearby tree branch and tried to get up, but I heard the wolf's sound getting closer from behind, so I turned and looked at it.
A wolf about a meter tall was running towards me at high speed.
So I did the only thing that came to my mind.
"Help! Please help me. There's a wolf that's going to eat me."
I screamed as loud as I could, hoping someone nearby would hear, but to no avail. My scream only caused birds to fly away.
So I turned to the wolf that was now close to me and raised the stick in my hand.
"I won't die easily, you bastard! Come on!"
As if responding to my scream, it jumped on my body.
"Ouch! Get off me."
When it fell on my body, it dug its claws into me, causing severe pain, but I resisted the pain and pushed the tree branch horizontally into the wolf's mouth, holding both ends and pushing to keep it away from me.
I looked into the wolf's eyes above me and screamed, "Get off me!"
Maybe I was imagining it, but I felt fear in its eyes when it jumped back, barely pushed away.
I quickly stood up using the stick, but I couldn't find it in front of me.
'Where did it disappear? It must be hiding somewhere around me because I can still feel its gaze on me.'
'Focus! Focus! Try to locate it. Use all your senses.'
Crack!
I heard the sound of a branch breaking on my left side, so I jumped forward immediately.
Indeed, the wolf jumped out of the bushes to the spot where I was.
"Ha ha, your moves are becoming predictable."
I mocked it while panting, but it didn't seem to like it because it jumped directly at me while I was on the ground.
'Oh no, I'm going to die. I don't want to die. I've already died once. I don't want to die again. Damn it!'
I thought while looking at the wolf that was jumping at me, its sharp fangs gleaming in my face, and its angry growl expressing its current feelings.
I closed my eyes when I saw it open its mouth, ready to tear me apart, but the pain I expected didn't come.
Whoosh!
I heard a strong whistling sound cutting through the air, so I opened my eyes, and what I saw shocked me.
The wolf's mouth was wide open, and a wooden arrow had pierced its right eye and exited from the other side of its head.
'Huff! If the aim was bad, it would have pierced my head instead of the wolf's.'
While still in shock, a giant man came, pulled the arrow from the wolf's head, and threw its body away with his foot as if he was tossing a pebble from the side of the road.
When he started walking away, I snapped out of my daze and ran after him with the help of the stick.
"Wait for me! Wait for me! Don't leave me alone."
I shouted at him to slow down, but he didn't even turn to look at me and continued walking.
'Tsk! Arrogant.'
I continued following him, annoyed that he wasn't listening to me.
I don't know how much time passed, but I kept walking behind him for a long time until he suddenly stopped.
"Huff! Huff! Hah, finally you stopped. What's there?"
He didn't turn to me but started gathering small branches and some grass.
"Hmm, are you going to light a fire? I'll help you."
I went to gather some branches and put them on the pile he had made, but he said, "Don't use these branches; they're wet. Use dry branches."
I heard a rough voice and turned to see the person who spoke, shocked.
"Huh! You speak? I thought you were mute."
At first, I thought he didn't understand the language I was speaking, but I didn't say this to avoid making him suspicious.
He didn't respond to my rude comment but grabbed two stones, fixed one, and moved the other down quickly.
Whoosh!
Sparks flew and fell on the pile of branches and grass. He threw the stones away and started moving his hands like a fan to create air.
The fire gradually started to burn, so he added branches from below, and the fire began to blaze.
'Wow! He's really good. This is the first time I've seen something like this.'
When the fire was lit, he sat on the ground, took out several pieces of meat from his bag, put a branch in the meat, and placed it over the fire.
I sat and watched him do these things with great skill.
I put my head on my knees while sitting and stared at the fire for an unknown period.
I came back to my senses when I started smelling the aroma of the meat coming from the grill.
Growl!
The sound of my stomach growling from hunger came out as I looked at the skewers of meat, and saliva dripped from my mouth. I wiped my mouth and looked away to forget the hunger.
'Shut up, stomach. I'll feed you later. I'm sure if I ask him, he won't even give me crumbs.'
Suddenly, a piece of meat filled my vision, so I took it unconsciously.
"Huh! You're really giving me this? Thank you."
I started eating it immediately after thanking him.
"By the way, what's your name?"
He remained silent for a while, then opened his mouth: "Garoun, my name is Garoun."
"Oh, Jaron, that's a good name. My name is Kaden Mort. Nice to meet you."
He didn't respond, but I got used to it.
'Now that I looked at him closely, his body is covered in scars.'
He was a very tall man, probably about two meters tall, and large in size. His hair was slightly gray with hazel eyes. His body was covered in scars, but the most noticeable scar was on the right side of his mouth, a horizontal scar as if made by a knife.
'That bow and arrows on his back, he used them to kill the wolf. And what's this belt around his waist? It has many pockets and a small bag.'
Suddenly, he stood up, extinguished the fire, and started walking, so I followed him.
"Oh! Wait for me. I'm coming."
I walked while looking at the beautiful sunrise.
