"This monster was only worth 30 skill points," Kain sighed. Indeed, reality sometimes didn't align with expectations.
But he quickly adjusted his emotions. 30 skill points it was.
Allocating the skill points to [Fire Control], Kain looked at the two open paths: one leading to the third floor of the Dungeon, and one leading back to the first floor. Kain, of course, chose to return to the first floor.
However, just as he was about to step out, he glanced behind him, towards the liquid residue in the distance that had once been the Slime. A question arose in Kain's mind.
"If a Magus's magic has its roots in their ego, then what is the root of a monster's magic? Is it also ego?"
"No, more accurately, regardless of whether it's a Magus or a monster possessing magic, they all use the same type of root."
"However, these instinctive monsters can master magic without practice because they aren't affected by the invisible concepts of the physical world impacting their ego. But they also lose the ability to advance in magic. In contrast, Magus, with a more difficult start, have a broader path ahead, because we can accept and change, not remain stagnant."
Indeed, taking the example of the red apple again, an ordinary person's perception is limited, no matter how many times they tell themselves, "this isn't a red apple." An interesting paradox occurs: the more they deny "this isn't a red apple," the more they affirm "this is a red apple." Because in their perception, they must visualize the subject in order to deny it, and that is a dead end.
As for monsters, they only possess instinct, so they basically don't need to know and aren't affected by external perception. Thus, the magic monsters create is extraordinarily stable.
Except for...
Kain remembered the monsters he had encountered that possessed consciousness, and even strategic thinking.
Although all of them had been utterly defeated and destroyed by him, who knew if the Dungeon could resurrect such creatures?
And how many more such monsters existed, growing smarter every day?
A vague sense of unease rising in his heart, Kain turned and left the Dungeon.
…
"I'll get to see Mera soon," Kain thought to himself. And for the first time, Kain stood before a flower shop, deliberating as he looked at the vibrant array of flowers on display.
He wanted to buy Mera a gift. He realized that throughout his months studying at Kanzax Academy, Mera had mostly been the one taking him to try all sorts of delicious and exotic foods in Esten, but he hadn't given her anything substantial in return.
Kain also had no experience buying gifts for the opposite sex, as this wasn't like buying necessities for his villagers.
So, after much deliberation, Kain decided to start with the most basic: buying flowers.
"Young man, what kind of flowers would you like?" the female florist asked, seeing Kain hesitate for a long time without making a decision.
Kain paused, then asked, "Are these all the types of flowers you have here?"
"Oh, there are a few more."
With that, the woman brought out a few more varieties of flowers, and Kain saw a type that was blue mixed with a clear white, very much like the color of the sky.
"Mera would probably like this," Kain thought to himself, then chose this flower without hesitation.
Afterward, he went to a rather large jewelry store located at the end of the street, a prime commercial location.
As soon as he opened the door, the eyes of both customers and staff inside were drawn to Kain's appearance.
Although his clothes looked quite dusty and weathered compared to a jewelry store that emphasized elegance and cleanliness, when combined with Kain's perfect physique and face, his extraordinary golden eyes, and his long, flowing silver hair, it was different. It was as if he were a noble aristocrat strolling through the mortal realm.
Even more striking was that Kain was holding an elegant bouquet of blue and white flowers, further enhancing the contrast.
"Do you have any jewelry that's the same color as this bouquet?" Kain asked the female clerk at the counter. She seemed a bit dazed and only snapped back to reality when Kain repeated himself, quickly apologizing and leading him to look at jewelry. During the process, she occasionally stole glances at Kain, her face slightly flushed, clearly captivated by him.
She had seen her share of wealthy and noble people, but none of them were as special as Kain, even though he wasn't intentionally trying to show off anything. His aura was truly too unique.
"I'll take these," Kain said, choosing a pair of crystal clear blue jade earrings that perfectly matched the bouquet. He then paid and turned to leave, much to the clerk's regret. At the same time, she looked at the bouquet Kain held so carefully with longing.
"The person he's giving that gift to must be very happy."
With a mix of vague anticipation and nervousness, Kain carried his gifts to the Mayor's mansion, where Mera had arranged to meet him. However, even before reaching the mansion gates, Kain narrowed his eyes.
There were ten guards lined up in front of the mansion gates—four inside and six outside. But Kain distinctly remembered that when he last visited the mansion, there were only four guards at the gate, two inside and two outside.
This location was in the center of Whesling, an open area, so the guards here mainly served to announce visitors or greet them, not genuinely for defense.
So, why had the number of gate guards suddenly and drastically increased? More than doubled, in fact?
