Chapter 18

As Lu Yuan focused his thoughts, the Evolution Cube that had been circling his gene chain suddenly emitted a quiet blue glow.
The blue light struck the gene chain, which, although previously stabilized, now underwent massive changes—more intense than during the encoding.
Lu Yuan’s muscles, bones, and organs felt as though they were being torn apart and reformed. The transformation brought with it intense pain, leaving Lu Yuan’s mind momentarily blank.
The evolution had begun.
Time passed, and after enduring what felt like an eternity of soul-deep pain, the blue glow gradually faded and the pain subsided.
The cube, which had been emitting a vivid blue light, now appeared more transparent, its energy mostly depleted after being used for the evolution. For recharging, spirit energy would suffice.
As the pain eased, a surge of potent strength welled up from deep within Lu Yuan. A sensation as comforting as the earlier gene sublimation followed.
The evolution was complete.
No will of any life form emerged, which was expected since Lu Yuan had already eradicated the Extraordinary Gene’s original life will.
For Lu Yuan, this was excellent news.
In future gene recordings, he could simply choose genes he was sure he could fully integrate before evolving them, completely safe from any risk.
Thinking this, Lu Yuan’s lips curled into a satisfied smile.
Brilliant!
The feeling of sublimation lingered for a moment before fading, and instinctively, Lu Yuan understood the nature of the evolved Extraordinary Gene: [Iron Body].
This gene mainly enhances bodily defence and strength, with slight improvements to agility and burst capability.
Compared to the Ordinary Quality [Stone Skin], [Iron Body] offered a more balanced enhancement, including agility.
Moreover, the overall boost was nearly double that of his previous state, even with the addition of the Beetle Claw.
This clearly showed how much stronger an Elite Quality Extraordinary Gene is compared to an Ordinary Quality.
Considering how formidable the Elite Quality was, Lu Yuan couldn’t help but wonder how much more potent the Champion Gene, Duke Gene, King Gene, and even Emperor-level Extraordinary Genes might be.
The thought filled him with anticipation.
Regrettably, the Evolution Cube lacked the energy to evolve the current gene further.
And even if he wanted to evolve again, his physical body was currently at its limit and couldn’t withstand another evolution without further strengthening his gene chain.
Now, however, he was already very powerful.
With Elite Genes and Elite Armaments, he could virtually dominate in the Ash Stone Forest, a beginner’s area.
Lu Yuan felt confident that he could easily take on a Black Mark Ash Stone Beetle alone.
Remembering the two beetles from before, he wondered how they were faring and considered paying them a visit.
After some thought, he decided it was a good idea and left his shelter, retracing his steps along the path he had come.
Previously, walking on the desert’s surface would have required caution, but now, with his enhanced abilities, the once fierce winds felt like mere breezes to him. What used to be painfully whipping sand now felt like gentle caresses on his skin, leaving him with mixed feelings.
He might have grown stronger, but his skin seemed to have thickened as well.
With increased speed, Lu Yuan quickly made his way back to the U-shaped desert region.
Approaching the area, he felt residual warmth from the extinguished firewall.
Looking down, he paused in surprise.
On the ground lay the two Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles he had thought about earlier, now dead and stripped of their valuable carapaces.
Clearly, someone had beaten him to them.
He had planned to deal with those two beetles himself, but now someone else had gotten there first.
Perhaps it was the Gene Warriors who had been drawn by the flames earlier.
Lu Yuan felt a slight relief in his heart, somewhat thankful.
Good thing he had made a quick escape earlier; Gene Warriors and Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles are quite different, with Gene Warriors being significantly more intelligent.
Given the intelligence of a Gene Warrior, they would likely have detected something amiss on the desert surface by now. If Lu Yuan had lingered here before, he might have been discovered.
Since the Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles were already dead, Lu Yuan had no reason to stay any longer.
He descended from the desert. As he passed the beetle corpses, he took a closer look, then casually chose a passage to leave.
Shortly after, Lu Yuan encountered two Ash Stone Beetles gnawing on rocks beneath a stone column.
His eyes lit up.
Time to test his current strength.
In Lu Yuan’s hand, the Beetle Claw sword appeared, and he approached the two Ash Stone Beetles.
When he got within about twenty meters of the beetles, they both paused and turned to look at Lu Yuan.
Then, they squeaked shrilly and charged at him.
Lu Yuan, observing their fierce mandibles, no longer felt the nervousness he had during his first encounter with Ash Stone Beetles.
As the beetles neared, he swung his sword, and a swath of black light sliced through the beetles.
Their charge came to an abrupt halt, their bodies sliding past Lu Yuan and collapsing behind him, their small legs twitching as life left them.
Death.
Lu Yuan’s mouth curled into a pleased smile.
Just as I expected!
What once posed a challenge was now effortlessly handled in such a short time—he could easily kill two Ash Stone Beetles.
Lu Yuan collected the Spirit Crystals, removed the Grey Stone Armour, and then moved on from the area to continue his hunt.
…
Two hours later, in a region of the Ash Stone Forest.
Swoosh!
Lu Yuan’s sword strike dispatched a lone Ash Stone Beetle; he exhaled softly, stepped forward, and picked up the Spirit Crystal.
Just then, he heard footsteps.
He paused, looking toward the source of the sound in the passageway.
The footsteps grew closer, and two Gnolls wearing black leather armour, wielding long blades, emerged.
One was covered in grey fur, the other in brown.
They looked somewhat familiar.
Upon seeing Lu Yuan, the Gnolls froze.
They locked eyes, then simultaneously broke into wide grins.
The brown-furred Gnoll’s expression turned fierce as he laughed maniacally:
“Hahaha, human child, didn’t expect this, did you? We meet again! Let’s see you try to run this time!”
Lu Yuan smiled back, “I was actually hoping I might run into you guys, lucky me.”
“You think meeting us is good luck? Seems like the Genetic Armament you got has made you overconfident. Your confidence is worthless!”
The grey-furred Gnoll glanced at the Beetle Claw sword in Lu Yuan’s hand and sneered, gripping his blade tighter as he advanced toward Lu Yuan.
The brown-furred Gnoll also moved closer in sync with his companion.
“Don’t you know, we both wield Genetic Armaments too! But thanks for the extra bounty you’ve led us to.”
As the two Gnolls closed in on Lu Yuan, a passer-by noticed them from a nearby passage.
It was the handsome Elf and his group of four.
They paused when they saw the standoff between Lu Yuan and the two Gnolls.
“Hey, isn’t that the guy who was being chased by the Ash Stone Beetle swarm before? And his two Gnoll companions?”
The tall, thin Elf looked puzzled, “What are they up to? Are they about to fight?”
The handsome Elf observed briefly and then remarked, “Looks like some internal strife.”
He smirked.
“Let’s not intervene just yet; we’ll hide here and watch how things unfold.”
Hearing the handsome Elf’s suggestion, the other three nodded in agreement.
“Sounds good, boss!”
“Hehehe… didn’t expect to stumble upon some extra loot, not bad at all.”
“This period, scamming rookies hasn’t been easy; such opportunities are rare.”
Four people stealthily hid behind a distant stone column, watching Lu Yuan and two Gnolls.
The two Gnolls had already initiated their charge toward Lu Yuan.
The brown-furred Gnoll, seeing Lu Yuan standing still, sneered menacingly.
“Human, it looks like you know you can’t escape, ready to let us kill you, huh? Don’t worry, your grandpa here will make it quick!”
As he spoke, he had already dashed up to Lu Yuan, raising his long blade high and slashing down at him with great speed.
Previously, Lu Yuan would have struggled to dodge such an attack.
But after encoding the Extraordinary Gene, his abilities had improved in all areas, including his dynamic vision.
Lu Yuan slightly raised his hand.
Clang!
The Beetle Claw long sword easily blocked the long blade, emitting a sound like metal clashing.
And Lu Yuan’s hand didn’t even flinch.
The brown-furred Gnoll felt the shock force travel up his arms, causing them to tingle slightly. He stared wide-eyed, somewhat disbelievingly at Lu Yuan:
“You blocked it?! How is that possible?!”
“What’s impossible about it?” Lu Yuan said with a slight smile.
The grey-furred Gnoll, who had been slightly behind the brown-furred one, also narrowed his eyes, shocked.
Then, he twisted his features into a fierce expression.
“You might block one, but can you handle two?”
He suddenly burst forward, swinging his blade horizontally toward Lu Yuan’s waist.
Lu Yuan chuckled, exerting force with his right hand, and the brown-furred Gnoll felt a massive force push him back involuntarily.
After repelling the brown-furred Gnoll, Lu Yuan’s wrist flicked, and his sword moved to block below.
Clang!
The Beetle Claw long sword firmly blocked the grey-furred Gnoll’s attack.
“This speed!”
Seeing Lu Yuan’s movements, the grey-furred Gnoll’s fur stood on end as Lu Yuan’s displayed strength far exceeded his expectations.
The grey-furred Gnoll immediately felt a sense of retreat; they were no match for him!
Just then, Lu Yuan’s long sword vibrated again, pushing the grey-furred Gnoll back another step, and the pitch-black sword light swept across the Gnoll’s neck.
Blood gushed out, the light fading from the grey-furred Gnoll’s eyes as his body swayed and fell to the ground.
The brown-furred Gnoll, who had been about to step forward to help, stopped dead in his tracks as he saw his companion fall.
“Big brother?!”
He stared at Lu Yuan, eyes filled with shock:
“How is this possible?! Just a moment ago you were being chased by us; how could you have become so much stronger in such a short time?!”
Lu Yuan looked at the brown-furred Gnoll, whose fur was bristling, and revealed a benign smile as he stepped closer.
“Why don’t you try and guess?”
