My Devourer System: Rise of the Bastard Son

Chapter 107: 107—Healing magic

Helie thrust her hands over her face. Dust washed over her, mixed in it were flecks of red and purple. All the Squire held their breaths.

The Red snapper Fiend had fallen to the ground. All the Stalkers were dead. The Fledglings were hiding in the tall grasses on both sides of the stone road, watching eerily.

The Fiend didn't rise again. Murmurs began to spread among them.

"What were those two beams that destroyed its eyes?" Arielle asked Samara, who had a dark expression on her face.

Samara brushed back her purple hair, sheathing her sword. Her curt but elegant voice said, "Divine spell, a powerful one at that."

Kon turned to Helie, grinning. "He's insane."

Helie's face looked surly though. "I hope so."

Duran walked back towards his carriage, grumbling. Set watched him for a moment before deciding Duran wasn't in the mood to talk.

"Okay, let's cut on the good ones. We'll eat them all this week hopefully," said Set. "Arielle, Tharic, take your people and watch the Fledgling still lurking. Helie, Callan, Ymir, we're on butchering duty. Someone get the butcher, we'll need his advice."

Helie walked towards the hulking form of the Red snapper Fiend. A red, purple and blue colossus with horribly long arms that ended in terrifying pincers. Its four eyes were now either destroyed or devoid of their former red glow.

Something moved over the spiked back of the Fiend, making them all tense and grip their weapons tighter. But then mana sense revealed the identity of the figure.

Lucen Lightcloak jumped down from the Fiend, sailing through the air and landing almost effortlessly. His blonde hair bobbed carelessly, he stretched his back, face as impassive as always.

Helie had come to learn that Lucen's expression grew calmer the more danger he was in. It was a skill she would love to have; she looked like a terrified goat in every fight, eyes popping out, mouth hung open.

They continued walking towards him. Set yelled impatiently, "We have to harvest their meat and useful materials before the Currocks start coming."

Currocks were the dominant predators in this area. Glassy shape-shifting creatures that could mimic the skills of their opponents.

Helie watched Lucen's fingers. Only one ring. She looked up and found him studying her. Under the even gaze of his golden eyes, she felt uncomfortable, turning away quickly.

Lucen nodded. "I'm a little sore. Can I get Ymir's help?"

Set waved him off tiredly and got to cutting off the huge eyes of the Fiend with his great sword spell.

Lucen clasped forearms with everyone as he passed. The Squires who so often looked at him with disdain now had looks of admiration. Helie couldn't blame them, everything Lucen did didn't make sense.

Something was ever so slightly off about him.

Kon clapped Lucen's shoulders. "Good job, but you shouldn't have destroyed the eyes. They won't be worth much now."

Lucen actually turned a bit pale, making Helie laugh under her breath. He sighed disappointedly. "It was do or die, I guess."

When he got to Helie, she just stretched and briefly touched his forearm before trying to move on. But he grabbed her arm firmly.

Her heart sped and a cold sweat slid down her spine. She glanced up at his

But Lucen looked worried. He was frowning slightly. "Are you… okay?"

"Yes. Just tired," Helie responded quickly, glancing away quickly.

Lucen let go of her slowly and walked away. His tall form retreated slowly, giving a mock smile and stiff bow to the Knights

Helie turned away, listening to his footsteps retreat, staring at the ground. She hoped to god it wasn't him.

Because things would get messy very quickly.

Lucen walked slowly to not aggravate his pulsing ankle. Eyes followed him wherever he went, crawling over his skin.

He'd be best off not showing any weakness normally, but looking too strong was also suspicious. He healed majority of his injuries despite everything, but no one knew about his [Blood Rebirth] skill.

Lucen spat and sat against one of the carriages. Ymir had gone to get the butcher, he would wait here till she got back.

The others were already healing people. Melanie, a Square from Set's team, ran a glowing bubble of water over a Knight's shoulder.

There were other healers going around but they all avoided him hesitantly, they all seemed to want and not want to help him.

Lucen sighed; their need to kiss ass and hate bastards was frying their tiny brains.

Someone tapped Lucen on the shoulder, he knew someone was in the carriage he was sitting against, but he expected them to ignore him.

He turned and was face to face with Kibara. He reared back a little and coughed. "Oh, didn't know it was you."

Kibara rolled her eyes. "Sure."

"No, seriously. I was just sitting here to wait for Ymir to come heal me."

Kibara's magenta eyes lit up, she waved him in. "I can use a healing spell! Come here."

Lucen looked into the dark space, they would be alone. He glanced back at his carriage. It was in the very back.

Kibara grabbed and pulled him towards the carriage impatiently. She sat Lucen down and examined his body.

"What hurts?"

"Everything."

"I need a specific place, my spell works by running water over the injured spot," she explained, the longer it runs the better the healing."

Lucen glanced down. "My leg is pretty bad. I think it's my ankle, but my entire shin hurts."

Kibara ran her hand over the smooth black metal of his armor. "You'll have to take this off."

Lucen shook his head vigorously.

Kibara scowled at him. "I mean the fucking plate armor. Aren't you wearing something under?"

Lucen exhaled. "Oh, I have clothes in my space ring. Just turn around for a moment while I change."

Kibara sighed and spun around. "Go ahead."

Lucen changed in a brief flash of light and got to enjoy Kibara's shocked face when he said he was ready.

They spent the next few moments in silence. The sound of water dripping from his leg accompanied them, and Lucen sighed as the pain faded away.

"So you're not a demigod," Kibara said suddenly. "So you use dark magic?"
