Chapter 306: The Potential of a Foodie
「Twenty minutes later.」
They finally arrived at their destination.
"Just park the car here."
There was a spacious grove where the wedding car and the other guests' cars were parked. Lin Feng's SUV was extremely conspicuous.
Lin Feng took Zhang Yuxi's hand, and after a short walk, they arrived at the bride's grandmother's home. From a distance, they could see many people gathered around tables, talking and laughing. It was a beautiful, three-story Western-style house, and the yard and even the road outside were filled with banquet tables packed with people.
Zhang Yuxi whispered, "Darling, I've always heard about these traditional running banquets, but I've never had the chance to experience one. Today, my wish is finally coming true!"
Lin Feng smiled. "Then let me show you what it's like. The food is actually quite good."
Zhang Yuxi added, "I feel a bit shy in situations like this. Could you be proactive and get some food for me? Please?"
Lin Feng found his wife's request both cute and funny.
"Alright," he said. "Just give me a look when you want something, and I'll get it for you."
Zhang Yuxi smiled with contentment.
Feng Yong, dressed in a suit, was greeting guests with the bride. Seeing Lin Feng's party, he came over to welcome them. "You're here! Come, sit here!"
One table was still empty, although the dishes had already been served. Zhang Yuxi's eyes lit up when she saw it.
Lin Feng handed a red envelope to Feng Yong, who tried to refuse it. "No need, no need."
Lin Feng simply placed it directly into Feng Yong's suit pocket. "Who comes to a wedding banquet without giving a gift?"
There was one red envelope from Zhou Cuilan, one from Lin Jiajun's family, one from Lin Rui, and one from Lin Feng, for a total of four. Each had a name written on the back. In the car, Zhang Yuxi had curiously peeked inside theirs. It contained an auspicious number: 2222, signifying that good things come in pairs and a couple is for a lifetime.
With so many people watching, I have to show some restraint.
Therefore, Zhang Yuxi ate elegantly while giving Lin Feng a meaningful glance. "Darling, I want to eat the crispy pork."
Seeing the freshly served, steaming plate of crispy pork made her mouth water.
Just then, a few more people arrived and were seated at their table, which meant Zhang Yuxi felt she had to be even more reserved.
One of them, an older woman from the countryside, spoke frankly. "Wow, you are so beautiful!"
This made Zhang Yuxi blush immediately. "Thank you, Granny."
The old granny then looked at Lin Feng. "And you, lad, are quite handsome too!"
Lin Feng replied with a warm smile, "Granny, how old are you? You look really spry."
"I'm seventy-eight."
"Really? You don't look it at all! Your complexion is so good."
Lin Feng was good-looking and a smooth talker, and his words made the old granny very happy. The others who had arrived with her were a pair of middle-aged women and a small child about seven or eight years old.
The old granny said with a smile, "You city folks don't often get to enjoy this kind of banquet; it's quite tasty. Go ahead, eat up!"
Zhang Yuxi smiled politely.
Lin Feng glanced at her and followed her gaze. He immediately knew which dish she wanted and promptly served her some.
Before long, the newlyweds came over to offer toasts. Seeing the bride in her wedding dress, Zhang Yuxi couldn't help but feel a pang of envy. She said earnestly, "You look so beautiful today!"
Being praised by such a stunning woman made the bride a little shy. "Thank you!"
...
They ate for the entire morning, and by the end, the couple was stuffed.
As they were leaving, the old woman at their table insisted they wrap up some of the crispy pork and small fried fish to take with them. "These are all very delicious," she said. "You city folks can't get these."
Finally, she stuffed their pockets with wedding candies and sunflower seeds, her enthusiasm boundless. Suddenly, the couple felt like little children again.
On the way back, they couldn't help but think of their own grandmothers. If their grandmothers were still alive, they would surely be just as kind and loving.
Lin Feng said, "When I was little, my grandma would always bring back tasty foods whenever she went to a wedding."
Zhang Yuxi wanted to know more about Lin Feng's past, but it was a difficult topic to bring up.
"My memory of my grandma is very vague," she said. "The only vivid memory I have is of the day she died. I was standing at the hospital entrance, and I saw her pale face..."
So many years had passed, yet she could still recall that pale face with perfect clarity. But she wasn't scared at all.
Back at home, the children were taking their afternoon nap. Zhou Cuilan was tidying up the house, organizing their toys.
Zhang Yuxi went over to help.
Zhou Cuilan waved her away. "No need, no need, I'm almost done. You go get some rest."
Zhang Yuxi felt too awkward to just relax. "Mom, let me do this last bit. You take a break."
Seeing how insistent she was, Zhou Cuilan didn't argue.
Lin Feng, however, said mysteriously, "Mom, come here! I have a treasure for you!"
Zhou Cuilan's interest was piqued. "What treasure? Let me see."
Lin Feng took out a plastic bag from his pocket. Having seen her share of the world, Zhou Cuilan smiled immediately. It seemed she had already guessed what it was.
Lin Feng handed the bag to her. "Here, we brought this back for you from the wedding. Have a taste!"
Zhou Cuilan opened the bag, which contained sunflower seeds, peanuts, crispy pork, small fried fish, and dried sweet potatoes. She laughed, reminiscing, "I haven't eaten these things in many years. They really are treasures now."
By now the crispy pork was cold and hard, and the small fried fish was no longer crispy, but they still tasted wonderful.
"Leave some of this for your dad," she said. "Let him have a taste, too."
Just as she was speaking, the voice of the Fourth Treasure came from upstairs. The little ones were awake.
Zhou Cuilan quickly gathered the food and found a place to hide it.
Lin Feng looked puzzled. "Mom, what are you doing?" Her expression was like that of someone guarding against a thief.
After hiding the treats, Zhou Cuilan smiled. "If Fourth Treasure found out about this, there'd be trouble!"
The couple exchanged a look; they knew instantly that something must have happened after they left.
Zhou Cuilan explained as she headed upstairs.
"Didn't I make grape wine this summer?
"I don't know how Fourth Treasure's nose is so sharp, but while they were playing, I took just one sip. He ran right over and insisted on knowing what I was eating.
"I said it was wine, but he didn't believe me and went looking for it himself. Somehow, he tracked it down by the scent and found it. He made such a fuss, demanding a sip. I couldn't let him, of course, so I just dipped a chopstick in to let him have a taste.
"I made the wine late this year, so it doesn't have much of an alcohol taste.
"Well, once Fourth Treasure tasted it, he got addicted. He started pleading and scheming, trying every trick he could think of to get more. I gave him a few tiny sips, and he was overjoyed. Then the Eldest Treasure joined in the commotion, and I couldn't very well deny the Second and Third Treasures, could I?
"Fourth Treasure even dreams about it, mumbling in his sleep that he wants more. So, you see, I had to hide it while he was napping."
The couple had seen Fourth Treasure's foodie talents before, but tracking something by scent alone seemed a little exaggerated. But as it turned out, they had vastly underestimated the potential of a true foodie.
