Chapter 81 - Afternoon Adventures
The colorful kite soared gracefully against the azure sky, catching the afternoon breeze with ease. Both Veronica and Cecelia beamed with delight as they watched their creation dance among the clouds.
Marco observed Veronica's radiant expression, something unreadable flickering across his features. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly as he studied her carefree laughter.
Catching his intense stare, Veronica tilted her head with curiosity. "Is something bothering you?"
"No," Marco answered curtly, his tone giving nothing away.
Rather than pushing for more, Veronica simply shrugged and guided Cecelia toward a different area of the park. True to his word, Marco maintained his distance while keeping them within sight.
Once they grew weary of kite flying, Veronica and Cecelia wandered toward the shimmering lake where elderly men sat patiently with fishing rods. They then discovered a vendor's makeshift pond filled with darting goldfish, crouching down to watch the creatures swim in circles before attempting to scoop them up with tiny mesh nets.
The sun climbed higher, signaling the arrival of noon.
Marco had only planned a brief outing, so he hadn't packed any food. Noticing Cecelia beginning to fidget with hunger, he decided they should grab lunch at one of the quaint restaurants dotting the park's perimeter.
The morning's fresh air and activities had lifted Veronica's spirits considerably from her earlier mood, making her agreeable to his suggestion.
Throughout their meal, Veronica focused primarily on entertaining Cecelia with stories and gentle questions about her interests.
Marco watched their easy rapport develop, choosing not to interrupt their bonding. Instead, he quietly reached across the table whenever he noticed them eyeing particular dishes, sliding plates closer without drawing attention to his actions.
Completely absorbed in her animated conversation with Cecelia, Veronica remained oblivious to his thoughtful gestures.
The peaceful atmosphere was interrupted when Marco's phone buzzed insistently.
After checking the screen, he addressed Veronica. "I need to answer this."
"Of course," she responded with understanding.
Nate's name had appeared on the display.
Marco stepped several feet away before accepting the call. "Yes?"
"Where are you hiding today? Have you grabbed lunch yet? My buddy just delivered some incredible fresh seafood straight from the coast. You should swing by and try some. Cullen and the gang are already heading over."
Marco's eyes drifted toward Veronica and Cecelia, who were now playing a clapping game. "I've already eaten. Perhaps another time."
"What about this evening then? There's an exclusive yacht party planned. Cullen and the rest have already committed to attending. You should bring your little niece along. We're all eager to meet her properly. Consider it her official introduction to the group."
Marco shook his head despite Nate not being able to see him. "She's quite reserved around strangers and large gatherings make her anxious. A crowded yacht wouldn't be appropriate for her."
"Don't worry about that. Sa will be joining us too. Since they're practically the same age, they'll probably hit it off immediately. I'll expect you both at seven sharp."
Before Marco could voice another objection, Nate ended the call abruptly.
Following their leisurely lunch, Veronica and Cecelia continued their afternoon adventures. They chased brilliant butterflies through flower beds and rented bicycles to cruise along the winding park paths.
Eventually, exhaustion caught up with both of them, and they settled onto a shaded bench to recover. The combination of fresh air and physical activity soon lulled Cecelia into a peaceful nap.
Feeling the day's weariness settling into her own bones, Veronica decided it was time to return home. She quietly slipped away to her car and drove off without disturbing the sleeping child.
Marco remained motionless, tracking her vehicle until it completely vanished from view before making his own departure.
When Cecelia stirred awake sometime later, she immediately scanned the area with a confused frown. "Where did Ms. Murray go?"
"She returned home," Marco explained simply.
"Oh..." The disappointment in Cecelia's voice was unmistakable, her shoulders sagging slightly.
As seven o'clock approached that evening, Marco found himself boarding the luxurious yacht as promised.
Cullen and several other familiar faces had already claimed spots on the deck. Upon spotting Marco's arrival, Nate enthusiastically gestured him over.
His attention immediately shifted to Cecelia, and Nate broke into a welcoming grin. "So this is the famous Cecelia we've heard so much about. What a lovely young lady. I'm Nate Dante, one of your uncle's oldest friends."
The yacht buzzed with conversation and laughter from numerous guests, creating exactly the type of overwhelming environment that made Cecelia retreat into herself.
Following Nate's friendly introduction, Niall appeared on deck with Sabrina close behind.
Marco's expression tightened slightly at the unexpected sight of them.
Sabrina had clearly been briefed about Cecelia's personality beforehand. She approached with a gentle smile and extended her hand in greeting. "Hi there, sweetheart. There's a whole group of kids having fun on the other side of the yacht. Would you like to come explore with me?"
Cecelia's uncertain gaze immediately sought Marco's approval. Only after receiving his encouraging nod did she find the courage to accept Sabrina's outstretched hand.
As soon as the children disappeared around the corner, Nate couldn't resist teasing his friend. "So how are you adjusting to your new role as a full-time babysitter?"
"It's manageable."
Despite her natural shyness, Cecelia possessed excellent manners and rarely caused any real trouble, making Marco's temporary guardianship relatively straightforward.
Cullen appeared beside them, extending a crystal glass filled with amber liquid. "Ready for a proper drink?"
