Chapter 72 - Unexpected Exposure
When Dario noticed how Veronica acknowledged the approaching man, something in their interaction suggested familiarity beyond casual acquaintance.
"That's Marco Valerie," Veronica explained simply.
Dario raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Marco Valerie? I thought you two barely knew each other. What brings you to the same table?"
"His niece had an accident at the pool earlier. I helped her out, and he wanted to express his gratitude." Veronica's tone remained neutral, giving nothing away.
Understanding crossed Dario's features. "That makes sense."
Since Veronica had mentioned being with colleagues, Marco naturally assumed the man who had approached her was simply a work associate. He didn't bother looking back to get a better view of the person.
After Veronica and Dario had moved some distance away, Marco finally turned around. He caught sight of a tall figure walking alongside Veronica, their silhouettes creating an elegant pair against the resort's ambient lighting.
From his vantage point, Marco could observe their comfortable proximity as they walked. The easy familiarity between them suggested a relationship that went beyond mere professional courtesy.
"Uncle Marco..."
Cecelia's small voice drew him back to the present moment. Marco shook off his wandering thoughts and focused on his niece.
"Have you finished your dinner? We should head back upstairs," he suggested, gathering himself.
"Yes, I'm done," Cecelia replied obediently.
Marco had eaten earlier in the evening, so he placed his napkin aside and guided Cecelia toward their suite.
Back in her room, Veronica settled onto the balcony with her book, planning to enjoy some quiet reading time. The peaceful moment was interrupted by her phone's sharp ring.
Cullen's name appeared on the screen.
He rarely contacted her unless circumstances demanded it, which meant this call likely carried significance.
After a brief hesitation, Veronica accepted the call with a guarded tone. "Yes?"
"Grandmother expects both of us for dinner tomorrow evening," Cullen stated without preamble.
Veronica processed this information briefly. "Understood."
The line went dead immediately after her response.
Such abrupt endings no longer fazed Veronica. She tucked her phone away, composed herself, and returned to her book.
The night brought Veronica exceptionally restful sleep, leaving her refreshed and energetic when dawn arrived.
She made her way to the resort's fitness center for an invigorating morning run. After allowing herself adequate recovery time, she decided another visit to the hot spring would be the perfect way to start her day.
A middle-aged woman approached while Veronica soaked in the warm waters. She held Cecelia's hand protectively, clearly the family's hired caregiver.
Veronica recognized her from yesterday's incident.
This woman served as Cecelia's nanny, employed by the Valerie family specifically to ensure the child's safety and wellbeing.
Yesterday's emergency phone call had distracted the nanny at a crucial moment, allowing Cecelia to wander off unnoticed.
Without Veronica's timely presence when Cecelia fell into the pool, the nanny would have faced devastating consequences.
Her gratitude poured forth in earnest thanks, which Veronica accepted graciously with a simple acknowledgment.
Veronica had expected yesterday's frightening experience to keep Cecelia away from the water indefinitely.
Marco had apparently worked skillfully to help his niece overcome her newfound fear. Cecelia gripped the nanny's hand securely while clutching a colorful swimming ring with her free hand. She tested the water temperature cautiously with her toe before gradually lowering herself into the pool.
Soon enough, Cecelia was using coordinated kicks and arm movements to propel herself through the water toward Veronica.
"Ms. Murray..." Cecelia's voice carried softly across the water.
Veronica turned her attention to the approaching child. "What is it, sweetheart?"
Cecelia didn't verbalize her thoughts, but her bright expression and playful movements around Veronica clearly indicated contentment.
The nanny watched with obvious amusement. "Cecelia has really taken to you, Ms. Murray."
Veronica responded with a warm smile while maintaining her comfortable silence.
Her schedule required departure soon, as the team-building activities included another planned event.
Before leaving the hot spring area, Veronica made sure to say goodbye to Cecelia properly.
Cecelia immediately stretched both arms upward in the universal gesture for affection. "Ms. Murray, hug!"
Veronica couldn't resist such an innocent request. She carefully lifted Cecelia from the pool, water droplets cascading from the child's small form.
After wrapping herself in a fresh, dry bathrobe, Veronica carried Cecelia toward the elevator bank. She planned to part ways with the child once they reached the appropriate floor.
The elevator doors hadn't yet arrived when Marco appeared in the corridor.
Cecelia's face lit up with pure delight. "Uncle Marco!"
Marco extended his arms, intending to transfer Cecelia from Veronica's care to his own. However, Cecelia found herself torn between her affection for both adults. She wanted to remain close to Veronica while also embracing her uncle.
Her solution was to reach one small arm toward Marco while maintaining her grip on Veronica.
Marco gently gathered Cecelia into his arms, but the child refused to completely release her hold on Veronica's bathrobe collar.
In that moment of transition, Cecelia's small fingers accidentally caught the fabric of Veronica's robe.
The garment fell open, revealing the delicate blue lace undergarments beneath.
Marco's eyes were drawn involuntarily to the exposed skin, taking in Veronica's pale, smooth complexion and the elegant curves of her figure. Her slender waist and graceful form created a vision that was both unexpected and completely mesmerizing.
The intimate moment stretched between them, charged with an electricity that neither had anticipated in such an innocent setting.
