Chapter 50 - Public Spectacle
The confrontation at the charity gala escalated quickly after that. The socialite's fiancé rushed forward, desperately trying to pull his bride-to-be away from the scene, but she wasn't having any of it. Their heated exchange echoed through the ballroom as guests turned to stare.
Within minutes, the woman's family descended upon the venue like a storm. Whitney had been absolutely correct in her assessment - this family wielded serious influence and weren't shy about flaunting it. They swept into the situation with the kind of entitled fury that only came from generations of unchecked privilege.
Isaac attempted to defuse the tension, his voice measured and diplomatic as he tried to explain the misunderstanding. But the socialite's relatives had zero interest in his reasoning. They launched into a vicious verbal assault on the Crystal family, their words dripping with condescension and barely concealed threats.
The faces of every Crystal family member present shifted from confusion to barely controlled rage. Whatever insults were being hurled at them hit their mark, judging by the way their jaws tightened and their hands clenched into fists.
That's when Cullen made his entrance.
He moved with the kind of quiet authority that commanded immediate attention. Without a word of explanation or hesitation, he shrugged off his expensive dinner jacket and wrapped it around Niall's shoulders. She looked small and vulnerable beneath the oversized garment, her earlier confidence shaken by the public humiliation.
Cullen then turned to face the socialite's parents. His conversation with them was brief - just a few carefully chosen words that Veronica couldn't make out from the video's audio. But whatever he said had an immediate effect. The color drained from their faces as realization dawned.
Without sparing another glance for anyone else in the room, Cullen scooped Niall into his arms and strode toward the exit. His movements were protective, possessive even, as he carried her away from the chaos.
The transformation in the socialite's family was instantaneous and complete. Their earlier arrogance evaporated as they recognized exactly who they'd been dealing with. They scrambled after Cullen, desperation replacing their previous hauteur as they tried to catch him before he disappeared entirely.
But the venue's security personnel blocked their path, forming an impenetrable wall between the family and Cullen's retreating figure. The same people who had been throwing their weight around moments before now found themselves powerless to pursue the man who could make or break their social standing with a single phone call.
The video's final moments showed a complete reversal of fortune. The once-domineering family now appeared deflated and panicked, clearly understanding the magnitude of their mistake. Meanwhile, Isaac and the other Crystal family members, who had been forced to endure insults just minutes earlier, walked past their tormentors without so much as a sideways glance. They followed in Cullen's wake, their dignity restored by his intervention.
The charity gala's guest list read like a who's who of high society, which meant the incident spread like wildfire across social media platforms. Even though most viewers couldn't identify Niall or the socialite by name, the drama was too juicy to ignore.
Once internet sleuths figured out that the mysterious rescuer was Cullen Dennis himself, the video went viral overnight. The comments section exploded with reactions.
"Holy shit, that's actually Cullen Dennis? The tech mogul?"
"I knew he was some kind of business genius, but nobody mentioned he looked like a movie star!"
"He's always kept a low profile. Most people know his name but have never seen his face until now."
As more details emerged, the speculation intensified.
"So this woman catches her fiancé cheating, but the supposed other woman is Cullen Dennis's girlfriend? Talk about picking the wrong target."
"I recognize that guy - the fiancé. He's from old money, decent looking too. But compared to Cullen Dennis? Please. There's no competition."
"We're talking about Cullen Dennis here. Forget the money and business empire - just look at the man. He's operating on a completely different level."
When Niall's devoted fanbase got wind of the story, they quickly filled in her background for curious onlookers.
"She's only twenty-five and already has a PhD from Harvard. Plus she races cars, climbs mountains, and apparently she's some kind of computer genius too. This woman is living in a completely different universe than the rest of us."
"Remember when she competed in that international race last month? Cullen showed up to watch her, and the photographers caught him looking at her like she'd hung the moon."
"God, they're both so accomplished and gorgeous. It's like watching two superhumans date each other. The rest of us might as well give up."
"Does anyone seriously think a woman like that, who's dating Cullen Dennis, would waste her time seducing some random engaged guy? She's got standards."
"You can see in the video that the fiancé approached her first. I get being protective of your relationship, but throwing wine at someone before you know the facts? That's just trashy behavior."
"Sometimes being beautiful is a curse. Poor Niall got dragged into someone else's drama just for existing while gorgeous."
Veronica had seen enough. She closed her laptop and checked the time - already past ten in the evening.
Cook had specifically mentioned that Cullen planned to pick her up from the spa retreat today. But her phone remained silent, no missed calls or text messages from him. The night was slipping away, and there was no sign of him.
Perhaps he had genuinely intended to collect her as promised. But then Niall's situation had required his immediate attention, and in the process of playing her white knight, Veronica had simply slipped his mind entirely.
She didn't allow herself to dwell on the disappointment. By eleven o'clock, she was back in her own apartment, letting hot water wash away the day's tensions in a long shower. When she finally crawled into bed, sleep came easily and mercifully dreamless.
