My Coldhearted Husband’s Regret

Chapter 124 - Empty Halls

A handful of guests, however, were calculating their next moves carefully. These social climbers saw an opportunity to curry favor with the Crystal and Mack, abandoning their previous allegiances without a second thought.

The Murray family's financial troubles had become common knowledge in their circles. Meanwhile, the Crystal and Mack basked in Cullen's powerful protection, making the political landscape crystal clear to anyone with half a brain.

Michael mumbled his apologies to Phillip before making his hasty exit. Mary and Poppy remained blissfully unaware of the growing exodus at first, too focused on greeting the remaining arrivals.

But as the evening progressed and more guests filtered out just as quickly as they had arrived, the approaching dinner hour revealed a harsh reality. The once-crowded banquet hall now echoed with emptiness, rows of vacant chairs serving as silent testimony to their social isolation.

Mary's expression darkened as she surveyed the sparse gathering. Poppy's face flushed with embarrassment and rage as the full scope of their humiliation became apparent.

"What in God's name is happening here?" Mary demanded, her voice cutting through the uncomfortable silence. "Where has everyone gone?"

Phillip and Veronica exchanged nervous glances, neither wanting to deliver the crushing blow. The weight of the truth pressed down on them as they struggled to find the right words.

Finally, Phillip cleared his throat and forced himself to speak. "The Mack and Crystal have relocated to Porter. They're hosting their own celebration tonight, a housewarming party. Most of our invited guests received their invitations as well, and they chose to attend that gathering instead."

The implications hung heavy in the air like a suffocating cloud. Phillip and Veronica watched Mary's face carefully, bracing themselves for an explosive reaction that could shatter what remained of the evening.

Both knew the deep wounds the Mack had inflicted on their family ran far too deep for forgiveness. With Rose still confined to the nursing home, a constant reminder of their betrayal, the hatred between the families had only festered and grown stronger.

This calculated insult on Mary's birthday would undoubtedly add fuel to an already raging fire of resentment.

But Mary had survived decades of cutthroat business dealings and family drama. She had weathered storms that would have broken lesser women.

When Phillip's words sank in, her knuckles whitened as she gripped the edge of the nearest table. For one dangerous moment, her composure threatened to crack completely. Then her eyes hardened into chips of ice as she fixed her stare on Phillip and Veronica.

"That Dennis boy is pulling their strings, isn't he?" she asked with deadly calm, cutting straight to the heart of the matter.

The Mack were newcomers to Porter with no established connections or social standing. There was no way they could have orchestrated such a massive social coup without serious backing from someone with real power and influence.

Mary's reference to "that Dennis boy" left no doubt she meant Cullen specifically.

"Yes, Granny," Veronica whispered, unable to meet Mary's piercing gaze.

Tears threatened to spill down Veronica's cheeks as the full weight of their family's humiliation crashed over her. "I'm so sorry this happened on your special day."

"None of this is your doing, sweetheart."

Mary's voice softened as she reached out to cup Veronica's face with surprising gentleness. "You have too good a heart to understand the depths some people will sink to when they want to hurt others."

"Granny, I feel terrible about this whole mess."

"Listen to me carefully."

Mary's gaze swept across the nearly empty banquet hall, taking in the abandoned tables and half-eaten appetizers. Her voice remained steady and controlled despite the chaos surrounding them. "A birthday is just another day on the calendar. What matters is having the people I love most safe and by my side. That's worth more than any party."

She paused, her eyes finding both Phillip and Veronica again. "Don't ever let someone else's cruelty and lack of character become a weapon they can use against you. Do you understand what I'm telling you?"

Her words carried a deeper meaning, an unspoken reference to the ongoing situation with Rose and the toll it had taken on their family.

Both Phillip and Veronica nodded solemnly. "We understand completely, Granny."

Veronica had extended invitations to Dario and Whitney earlier in the week, and they finally made their entrance just as the evening was reaching its lowest point.

Both newcomers were intimately familiar with the complex and bitter history shared between the three families, having witnessed firsthand the damage that had been inflicted over the years.

When they learned about the coordinated snub that had emptied the banquet hall, Whitney's reaction was immediate and explosive.

"Those absolute bastards!" she snarled, her face flushing red with indignation. "I've encountered some real pieces of work in my time, but this level of petty vindictiveness takes things to a whole new low!"

Dario placed a steadying hand on Veronica's shoulder, offering what comfort he could through the simple gesture.

His phone buzzed against his chest, and when he glanced at the incoming message, something shifted in his expression. A small smile played at the corners of his mouth as he looked up from the screen.

"I'm going to make a quick call and bring in some reinforcements," he announced mysteriously.

Veronica blinked in confusion, not understanding what he could possibly mean. "Reinforcements? What are you talking about?"

Dario's smile widened as he headed toward the exit. "You'll find out soon enough. Just trust me on this one."

Meanwhile, across town in the opulent banquet hall of the Mack residence, a very different kind of celebration was reaching its peak.
