Chapter 122 - Forgotten Affections
Cullen had no intention of attending the birthday celebration.
Veronica understood this without needing further clarification. She simply hung up the phone without another word.
For years, Veronica had invited him to join her at the Murray family home for Mary's birthday. This year marked the first time she hadn't extended the invitation, yet Cullen seemed completely oblivious to this change.
After ending the call, Cullen returned the phone to Sabrina and delivered his instructions with characteristic authority. "Your mother will collect you tomorrow evening for Granny's celebration. I expect you to behave properly on Saturday and stay close to her."
Sabrina's lips formed a small pout. "But I wanted to..."
Cullen's silent stare cut through her protest like ice. His expression remained completely impassive, yet the weight of his disapproval filled the space between them.
Understanding that negotiation wasn't an option, Sabrina surrendered with obvious reluctance. "Fine, I'll go."
Cullen's approval came with a slight nod. "That's my girl."
Sabrina's pout deepened, but she pressed forward with her own demand. "I still want to visit Niall on Sunday, and you're coming with me this time."
A ghost of a smile touched Cullen's lips. "Agreed."
Friday evening found Veronica making her way to the Dennis estate after another long day at the office.
Cullen's presence in the main living area caught her attention immediately. His early return home was highly unusual.
He was deep in conversation on his phone when her footsteps echoed through the entryway. Their eyes met briefly as he glanced in her direction, but he quickly turned away to continue his business call.
Carlos had anticipated Veronica's arrival and her plan to take Sabrina to the Murray residence. He'd coordinated the evening meal specifically so mother and daughter could eat before their departure.
Veronica declined his thoughtful preparation. She preferred they dine with the Murray family instead.
Carlos found himself in an awkward position, looking toward Cullen for guidance on how to proceed.
Cullen remained absorbed in his phone conversation, though he'd clearly overheard the exchange. He briefly lowered the device and addressed Carlos with casual authority. "Follow Mrs. Dennis's preferences."
Without missing a beat, he resumed his call, effectively dismissing the matter.
Veronica turned her attention to Sabrina. "We should leave now, sweetheart."
Sabrina brightened immediately. She waved enthusiastically toward Cullen. "We're heading out now, Dad. See you later!"
Cullen returned the gesture with equal warmth. "Have a good time."
The interaction between Veronica and Cullen remained notably absent. She collected Sabrina and departed without acknowledging her husband directly. Cullen, for his part, only watched their exit after his farewell to his daughter.
Mary's birthday celebration promised to be an elaborate affair this year. Upon arriving at the Murray residence and sharing dinner with the family, Veronica immediately immersed herself in the preparation activities.
The setup process extended well past midnight, leaving everyone exhausted but satisfied with their progress.
Dawn came early the following morning, bringing with it the excitement of Mary's special day.
Before breakfast could be served, Veronica joined Phillip and several other family members in a touching ritual. They gathered around Mary, offering heartfelt birthday wishes and presenting the gifts they'd carefully selected for her.
Sabrina observed the gift-giving ceremony with growing alarm. She tugged gently at Veronica's sleeve, seeking her mother's attention.
Veronica bent down, bringing her ear close to Sabrina's whispered concern. "What is it, darling?"
Embarrassment colored Sabrina's cheeks a deep pink. "Mom, I completely forgot to bring Granny a present," she confessed in hushed tones.
The realization had struck her only moments before.
Her embarrassment quickly transformed into accusation. "Why didn't you remind me about getting her something?"
Veronica's response carried both reassurance and subtle disappointment. "I've already brought gifts representing all of us - myself, your father, and you. Since you're still young, no one expects you to handle such responsibilities independently. Just remember for next time if you want to show Granny how much you care about her."
While Veronica's words provided comfort to Sabrina, a distinct chill had settled over her expression.
The truth was more complex than her gentle explanation suggested. She had deliberately chosen not to remind Sabrina about selecting a gift for Mary.
If Sabrina had genuinely cared about Mary's feelings, the thought of bringing something special would have occurred to her naturally upon learning about the birthday celebration.
The gift didn't need to be expensive or elaborate. A simple drawing created with love, or even asking Veronica to stop somewhere for a small purchase during yesterday's pickup, would have demonstrated thoughtfulness.
Yet Sabrina had never mentioned the possibility of bringing a present until this awkward moment.
The contrast with Sabrina's behavior regarding Niall was stark and telling. When it came to Niall's birthday, Sabrina maintained a mental countdown for weeks in advance. She planned and prepared with genuine enthusiasm.
This difference in attention and care hadn't escaped Veronica's notice. She could clearly see where Sabrina's true affections lay, which explained her decision not to intervene or offer reminders about Mary's gift.
