Chapter 111 - Bidding War
Veronica had learned to expect the unexpected when it came to Cullen's indifference. The previous banquet and tech expo had taught her well enough—in his world, she simply didn't exist.
The auction commenced as the host stepped forward, commanding immediate silence throughout the grand hall.
Veronica had spent considerable time studying the catalog beforehand. Two items had captured her attention: an exquisite emerald jewelry set and an embroidered masterpiece by a celebrated artist. Her final choice would depend entirely on how the evening unfolded.
The bidding began with swift precision.
Veronica remained motionless, her paddle untouched unless an item truly interested her. Cullen and Niall displayed similar restraint, observing rather than participating in the early rounds.
Then something shifted. Both Veronica and Whitney watched as Niall finally lifted her paddle, her target clear—a dazzling diamond bracelet.
The piece bore the unmistakable signature of an internationally acclaimed designer. Even from their seats, the bracelet's youthful elegance was undeniable. This wasn't a purchase for display or investment. Cullen was buying this specifically for Niall.
The auctioneer announced the opening bid at one and a half million. Without hesitation, Niall doubled the amount to three million with her first bid.
Competing bidders responded predictably, driving the price to four million within minutes.
Veronica observed Niall leaning intimately toward Cullen, her lips nearly brushing his ear as she whispered something private. Whatever she said prompted Niall to raise her paddle decisively.
"Eight million," Niall announced, her voice carrying clearly across the hushed hall.
The reaction was immediate and electric. Conversations erupted throughout the room as attendees processed the astronomical jump.
While the bracelet possessed undeniable beauty, its actual worth fell far short of eight million. Even the four million mark had been generous. But Niall's desire was evident, and Cullen's wealth was legendary. Rather than endure a prolonged bidding war, he had chosen to end the competition with overwhelming force.
The crowd's amazement wasn't solely about Cullen's casual spending—it was his obvious devotion to Niall that left them speechless.
The strategy proved flawless. Faced with such an intimidating bid, all other competitors retreated immediately. The bracelet belonged to Niall.
Whitney's jaw clenched visibly. "This sweetness is making me sick," she muttered through gritted teeth.
Before Veronica could offer any response, the next lot appeared on stage.
Several rounds passed before an antique vase captured the room's attention.
Once again, Niall's paddle rose. The starting price stood at five million.
Other bidders proceeded cautiously, raising bids by conservative increments of half a million or one million. When Niall's turn arrived, she shattered their measured approach by jumping directly to ten million.
The bold move eliminated several competitors instantly. However, this auction hall attracted only the wealthiest collectors in the city.
A confident male voice cut through the tension. "Fifteen million."
Veronica turned toward the sound, spotting a young man whose sharp features commanded attention even in this distinguished crowd.
"Maverick Harris," Whitney identified quietly. Veronica acknowledged the information with a subtle nod.
Niall's confidence wavered as she turned toward Cullen, seeking guidance. Her body language revealed everything—this vase held personal significance for her.
The realization struck Veronica suddenly. Sophia Bennett, her paternal grandmother, had maintained a lifelong passion for antique collecting. Niall wasn't bidding for herself—she intended this piece as a gift for Cullen's grandmother.
Cullen's slight nod provided the encouragement Niall needed. Her paddle shot up again. "Twenty-five million."
Maverick's laughter carried a hint of challenge. "Thirty million."
Uncertainty clouded Niall's expression as she leaned closer to Cullen, apparently suggesting they abandon their pursuit.
Cullen's response was a firm shake of his head. Niall straightened and raised her paddle once more. "Forty million."
Maverick's reply came without delay. "Fifty million." His smile turned predatory as his gaze swept toward Cullen's section of the hall.
Niall's frown deepened as she whispered urgently to Cullen, "Perhaps we should walk away?"
Fifty million represented an astronomical sum, even for someone of Cullen's means.
