Chapter 193: Ghost Bell's Warning, Li Jing's New "Hero
"Brain death?"
Black Cocoon leaned against the car door, softly murmuring, and turned his head with slight surprise.
"That's right." Ke Qirui nodded.
Black Cocoon squinted his eyes, silently staring at the gradually pale body of the red traffic light, thinking to himself: "The Mentor must have given the 'id' of the red traffic light an order, that once the red traffic light reveals his information, it will lead to brain death in a short time."
The brain nerves have already died, and soon the red traffic light will die from lack of oxygen. Even with a ventilator forcefully maintaining his vital signs, it would only allow this body, reduced to an empty shell, to barely survive for a little longer, which is meaningless.
Thinking of this, Black Cocoon said, "Considering Mr. Chess Player's kindness, let's give him relief, Miss Ke."
"You won't continue to ask?"
"No, there's nothing more to ask." Black Cocoon shook his head, "Moreover, for someone who is brain dead, whether my ability works is also a question."
He knew in his heart that the red traffic light could not possibly know the whereabouts of the Salvation Society base.
The only link between this person and the Salvation Society was probably just meeting the Mentor once, and just that one meeting led the red traffic light straight into hell, wandering the earth like a ghost for two years.
This is the terrifying aspect of the Salvation Society.
"I understand." Ke Qishu mused, "I originally wanted to take the red traffic light back to the Exorcist Association to submit the mission, but if the enemy has some Power Users who can recreate the scene through a corpse, that would be bad."
"Indeed, I wanted to mention this."
"Don't worry... I understand your concerns, we are now in this together."
Ke Qirui, while speaking, reached into her coat pocket, took out a vintage revolver, spun the cylinder, and without expression aimed the barrel at the chest of the red traffic light.
She lowered her eyes, silent for a moment: "The Latin phrase left by the red traffic light at every crime scene translates to 'Salvation Society' in Chinese, that's the name of the mysterious organization, right?"
"That's right."
"Xia Pingzhou, does he also know of the Salvation Society's existence?"
"There's some connection."
"I see..." Ke Qirui said, pulling the trigger of the revolver.
The gunshot resounded, tearing through the dead silence that filled the carriage. The bullet pierced through the chest of the red traffic light, creating a hole in the heart.
Blood splattered a foot on the ground, the sinister red covering the old, rusty iron plates.
Black Cocoon remained silent.
Hearing the commotion, three people from the neighboring carriage quickly opened the door and rushed in, looking at the corpse on the floor with astonishment. The blood gushed towards them, staining their shoes red.
"Is that enough?" Ke Qishu asked, raising a hand to close the red traffic light's eyelid.
"Yes... that's enough." Black Cocoon glanced towards the temporal storm outside the window, "Miss Ke, a word of advice for you... it's best to stay near the Lake Hunting team for the time being. Nowadays, only people from Lake Hunting within the Exorcist Association might still be trustworthy."
He paused: "In fact... if even Lake Hunting has been infiltrated by that organization, then you truly have no way out, leaving early would be the best choice."
"Thank you for your concern." Ke Qirui put away the revolver and straightened up, "Then, we shall part ways here, Mr. Black Cocoon."
She looked up at Black Cocoon: "Thank you again for your help. Without your prior warning, we might have died at the hands of those kids."
As soon as she finished speaking, accompanied by a deafening roar, the Train Demon burst out of the temporal tunnel and braked sharply, stopping on the rusty, mottled tracks.
The car door opened, and Black Cocoon turned his head to look out, seeing the scene of the abandoned train station in the Gu Yima District; they had boarded the train here at dawn.
The afternoon sun was so bright it was hard to look directly at, and the water left on the tracks from last night had already been quietly evaporated by the summer heat.
"I should not appear before you in the short term, take care."
With that said, Black Cocoon extended a restraint belt up to grab the eaves of the train station, sharing his weight, and leapt into the strong sunlight.
On his way home, he swung through the city and glanced at his phone.
It was 4 PM Li Jing time, and a WeChat message popped up on the screen.
[Gu Qiye: I've finished shopping and am on my way home. Why haven't you replied? Did something happen?]
Black Cocoon looked at the message while swinging past a high-altitude work platform on the surface of a building, extending a black restraint belt to help the workers stabilize a wobbly paint bucket, and typed a reply on his phone, then hit send.
[Gu Wenyu: I went to a classmate's house to play this morning, forgot to tell you.]
[Gu Qiye: Uh... no time to check the phone?]
[Gu Wenyu: My phone died, we were playing games, no time to check. I'm on my way home now.]
[Gu Qiye: Okay, let me know when you get home.]
[Gu Wenyu: Okay.]
After sending the last message, Black Cocoon put the phone into his restraint belt and headed towards the residential building without looking back.
In no time, he dropped into the room through an open window, shedding the restraint belt that covered his body, retracting it into his skin, leaving only one to peel off the mask and tailcoat, sliding them under the bed, before grabbing a towel and a set of T-shirt and shorts from the wardrobe.
Carrying the change of clothes, Gu Wenyu drooped his head, tiredly opened the door, and walked out of the room.
Just then, he suddenly heard a loud window closing sound from the room next door.
He halted, quietly waiting in the corridor for a while, and saw Su Zimai also carrying clothes for a change, slowly exiting their room.
"What a coincidence?" he asked.
"Just woke up." Su Zimai replied, "I'm going to take a shower too."
So the two people in the hallway raised their hands in unison, chanting "Rock, Paper, Scissors" as they threw their fists.
Su Zimai threw scissors, while Gu Wenyu threw rock. She expressionlessly withdrew her index finger, leaving only her middle finger pointed at Gu Wenyu's back.
"Can't take a loss?" Gu Wenyu yawned, speaking as he walked into the bathroom without turning back, "Big brother said he'll cook dinner tonight, so don't go out later."
After saying this, he casually closed the bathroom door, looked up, and gazed blankly at his dark circles and pale face in the mirror.
"It's time for a good rest..." Gu Wenyu murmured softly, "In a few days, I'll have to fight over there in the miniature garden."
He undressed, turned on the showerhead, and soon steam filled the bathroom.
After his shower, he changed into clean clothes, then left the bathroom and stuffed his dirty clothes into the washing machine on the rooftop.
Gu Wenyu dared not put Black Cocoon's clothes in the washing machine, lest one day his big brother or little sister open it and find a swallowtail coat and Black Cocoon's mask.
When needed, he would sneak out in the middle of the night and toss Black Cocoon's clothes into a self-service laundromat for cleaning.
Yawning, he hunched his back and walked out of the rooftop, bumping into Su Zimai coming out of a room once again.
Gu Wenyu was about to sneak back to his room when Su Zimai suddenly reached out and grabbed his sleeve.
He turned his head impatiently and asked, "What's up?"
Su Zimai was silent for a moment, then looked into his eyes, "Big brother told me he noticed you weren't home this morning when he woke up?"
Gu Wenyu replied, "Yeah, I went to a friend's house to play in the morning. Any problem with that?"
"Went to a friend's house to play at four-thirty in the morning?"
"Can't we go to the seaside to watch the sunrise? Do you understand the romance of high school boys? He even brought a camera."
At this point, Gu Wenyu shrugged and smoothly changed the subject, "By the way, where did you go early today? I didn't see you in your room when I came home this afternoon."
Su Zimai thought for a moment, then looked at him with suspicion and walked silently into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.
Gu Wenyu nonchalantly entered his room, lay down on his bed, used the restraint belt to close his door, picked up the remote on the tatami, and pressed the power button.
As the TV screen flashed, the restraint belt pressed the channel code.
When it switched to Li Jing News station, the host's standard Chinese voice echoed:
"Next is a public announcement from the 'Li Jing Mutants Branch'.
"On July 26th, at 10:00 AM, the Li Jing Mutants Association held a special briefing in the press conference room.
"Association spokesperson Jiang Lin confirmed that the new Mutant, codenamed 'Mu Long', officially completed their professional registration yesterday at 18:00. Their superpower strength was assessed by the association's Disaster Assessment Center and is rated at 'Quasi-Catastrophe Level', on par with the current ace Blue Arc's data.
"During the 25-minute press conference, Mutant 'Mu Long' appeared in combat attire. Li Jing's Mutant representative 'Blue Arc' also attended the conference."
"When asked about the collaboration details, 'Blue Arc' willingly grasped Mu Long's right hand, telling reporters they would work together to protect the city and actively address superpower user crimes."
The host lowered their head, reading the script, while a video of the press conference played on-screen.
Mutant 'Mu Long' is seen draped in a grey, tattered cloak, wearing a dark blue knight-like helmet with only the lower half of their face exposed, and hawkeye-shaped optics at the eye sockets.
"You do great work; with you here, I can finally skip overtime every day." Saying this, Blue Arc patted Mu Long's shoulder warmly, extending his right hand to him.
Mu Long hesitated momentarily before silently shaking Blue Arc's right hand, both facing the media cameras. The image froze at that moment, and the host shifted to the next news piece.
Gu Wenyu raised an eyebrow, curiously scrutinizing Mu Long, the Mutant at the corner of the screen, thinking, "Another Quasi-Catastrophe Level in Li Jing, it seems Black Cocoon's contact list will have one more name."
At that moment, his spare phone hidden beneath the pillow buzzed. He flipped it out, turned the screen to check, and the sender's name made him raise an eyebrow slightly.
[Ghost Bell: Available?]
[Black Cocoon: Being so polite? Mr. Ghost Bell, you must have something important to discuss with me?]
[Ghost Bell: I want to talk about that new Mutant in Li Jing.]
[Black Cocoon: Mu Long?]
[Ghost Bell: Correct... This person is very dangerous.]
[Black Cocoon: Dangerous how?]
[Ghost Bell: Let's discuss in person.]
After saying this, Ghost Bell sent an address. Gu Wenyu clicked in and saw that it led to an abandoned building in Li Jing's Gu Yima District.
[Black Cocoon: I have quite the psychological shadow when it comes to such incomplete buildings. Can't you pick another meeting place? You know last time in that abandoned building in Japan, you first punched my stomach and then punched my head.]
[Ghost Bell: Stop talking, there's no time.]
[Black Cocoon: Understood, I'll be there soon.]
Gu Wenyu put away the spare phone, mumbling, "What the... Dad knows this 'Mu Long' privately?"
"Come on, just got back from a trip and now I have to work, give me a break."
He sighed, sat up, intending to get out of bed, then suddenly recalled that the cool-down time for the Restraint Incarnation had ended. He lay back onto the pillow, stretched his right hand to the bedside, peeling off layers of black restraint belts.
The restraint belts rose up like a small mountain from the ground, gradually assembling into a lopsided human shape resembling a tumbler, wobbling momentarily before stabilizing.
"You do great work; with you here, I can finally skip overtime every day."
Gu Wenyu mimicked Blue Arc's tone when speaking to Mu Long on TV, resting his right arm and patting the incarnation's shoulder with his left hand, "Try to get punched less by Ghost Bell this time."
The Restraint Incarnation nodded, and with a whoosh, it was enveloped in black restraint belts, becoming transparent. It released the window and leaped out, descending toward the alley.
