Chapter 178: Warning from the Black Cocoon, the World's Greatest Vehicle
On the tranquil platform number 7, Black Cocoon hung upside down beneath the eaves, flipping through a comic while chatting idly with Su Zimai.
Suddenly, a roaring sound came from within the tunnel, abruptly drowning out the entire world.
The two of them quickly turned their heads and looked towards the train tunnel, which was ancient from the time of its construction.
The Train Demon's spotlight cut through the night, illuminating their faces as its hundred-meter-long body rushed out of the dark tunnel.
At the same time, both of them on the platform instinctively raised their hands to cover their ears.
The next moment, a deafening screech echoed.
The head of the Train Demon jolted suddenly, and the entire carriage curled up from the middle like a snake's body, before slowly returning to a flat shape and coming to a stop on the tracks at platform number 7.
The wheels screeched sharply against the rails, producing sparks that splattered out with a "pop-pop" sound.
After a while, the hundred-meter-long train body finally settled down.
The Train Demon was entirely dark red, its enormous body almost blocking all the moonlight and casting a deep shadow onto the empty platform.
Fortunately, the inside of the carriage was brightly lit, with a warm orange glow spilling out, lighting up the surroundings like the fireflies on a Christmas tree.
Su Zimai lowered her face, standing on the platform with a look of resignation, waiting for the train doors to open.
Suddenly, a "huffing and puffing" sound emanated from the train head, as a rolling wave of steam erupted from the seams, swiftly enveloping the entire platform like smoke exhaled by a giant smoking an oversized cigar.
Moments later, the steam dissipated from the platform, revealing the true form of the Train Demon in the night.
Its entire body mirrored, reflecting the icy cold moonlight.
At this moment, a dark red face was embedded in the train head, with an aged appearance but long, bushy eyebrows, nostrils puffing steam, and a tightly pursed mouth, resembling a livid old man.
The platform fell completely silent.
"Finally here, you two." A voice accompanied by the sound of speech emerged as the door of carriage number 5 opened from the inside. A woman wearing a brown trench coat and holding a cigarette holder in her mouth stepped out. She wore a subtle, barely noticeable smile.
"Captain, why does your Train Demon always make such a racket every time?" Su Zimai slowly released her hands, sighing as she spoke.
Ke Qishu raised a hand to adjust her beret, smiling as she replied, "Can't help it, I've told it many times but it just can't stop making noise."
"Sticking around with you long-term feels like my hearing will greatly decline, I might need a hearing aid when I get older."
Su Zimai complained with a full grievance.
As they spoke, a melancholy voice echoed from above: "It's been a while, Miss Ke, seeing you still so spirited puts me at ease."
"It's just been a week, hasn't it been that long?"
Ke Qirui said while she stowed away her cigarette holder, curving the corner of her lips, and lifted her eyes to look at Black Cocoon hanging from the eaves.
"A week is quite long for me, it felt extremely lengthy," Black Cocoon said, "May I ask if your two team members are inside the carriage?"
"Of course, the Ghost Train Corps is a cohesive unit, we usually don't act alone."
Black Cocoon said while reading a comic, "Good, my point is... they seem pretty temperamental, better not arrange for me to be in the same carriage with them, otherwise I'm quite worried they might beat me up."
"Oh... Not expecting our omnipotent and omniscient Mr. Black Cocoon to actually worry about such trivial matters."
Ke Qirui paused, teasingly said, "No need to worry, since the girl here who dislikes you the most is getting along, naturally the other two in the team will also get along with you."
"Is that so?" Black Cocoon tilted his head, suspiciously squinting his eyes, "You really won't trick me into the train and then beat me up?"
"Why would we?" Ke Qirui chuckled, "They'd even want to thank you for saving Xiaomai that day. If you hadn't stepped in, given the nature of those two introverted guys, they might deeply regret it for the rest of their lives."
"Captain!" Su Zimai looked at her in annoyance, protesting quietly, "Even if the big fluttering moth didn't save me, I wouldn't die that day, okay?"
She slightly tilted her head, snorting coldly, "I just let Xia Pingzhou off a little easy because I saw him as one of us."
Black Cocoon spread his hands, "Thank you, I will convey your kindness to Mr. Xia Pingzhou. Thanks for not only sparing him but also boosting the sales of Baby Bus brand diapers."
He paused, "Oh... The reason I say boosting Baby Bus brand diapers' sales is because I will write this in my autobiography, and when it's a bestseller globally among 12 to 20-year-olds, surely it will drive the sales of this diaper brand."
Su Zimai's eye twitched slightly, her face flushed as she was about to get angry. Ke Qirui suddenly patted her head and said without turning, "Alright, a loss is a loss... Xu Sanyan and Lin Zhengquan certainly know more about what happened."
Black Cocoon closed "Goodbye, Eri", and met Ke Qirui's gaze.
"Listening to this, it seems my achievements deserve a private VIP carriage, don't they?" he asked.
Ke Qirui smiled, "Certainly, but you have to sit with us for now because we need to discuss tomorrow's mission essentials and... inquire some things about Xia Pingzhou from you."
As she spoke, she lowered her voice slightly, leaning forward to smoke a puff from the pipe, her eyes sparkling beneath the brim of her hat.
Regarding the person Xia Pingzhou, she still held many, many doubts.
"Since time is pressing, why don't we talk on the train," Black Cocoon said, retrieving his restraint belt from above, spinning in mid-air, and landing lightly, his feet resting on a dusty public wooden chair, with the hem of his coat hanging down.
Su Zimai turned her head to glance at him, and she was the first to step onto the gangway, entering the brightly lit carriage.
Black Cocoon jumped off the public wooden chair and followed closely behind.
Ke Qirui was the last to enter, closing the train door. The Train Demon roared and rumbled again, its engine screaming as it sped forward at an eerie pace, plunging back into the tunnel.
At the same time, Black Cocoon looked up and, through the dark red eye sockets of the mask, glanced at Xu Sanyan and Lin Zhengquan who were sitting quietly in the carriage.
The former was as usual, wearing a black high-collared trench coat, while the latter still donned a white vest paired with long pants.
Black Cocoon spoke, "Nice to meet you both, gentlemen. I am Black Cocoon, surely you've heard my name before?"
"Lin Zhengquan." "Xu Sanyan."
Their replies were very brief; one leaned back with eyes closed resting, the other quietly smoked while looking out the window.
"By the way, our Zhengquan has already broken through to Tier Three," Ke Qirui mentioned casually, taking a drag of her cigarette.
"A Tier Three Exorcist?" Black Cocoon crossed his arms, "Remarkable, they are indeed rare worldwide."
Lin Zhengquan's voice was deep, "Captain, don't say 'our,' it makes it sound like I'm your son."
"Getting shy now?" Ke Qirui smirked teasingly, glancing at him with an amused look.
Black Cocoon shrugged, "So, Mr. Zhengquan, what is your current level of power, Quasi-Catastrophe Level?"
"Definitely at the Quasi-Catastrophe Level, but how close to the Catastrophe Level is uncertain, since there haven't been any real battles yet."
"In other words, including the captain, you already have two at the Quasi-Catastrophe Level here, making your Ghost Train Corps quite formidable," Black Cocoon remarked.
"Hard to say... We also have a rising star here, she is actually our true ace," Ke Qirui said while putting an arm around Su Zimai's shoulder and smiling as she leaned close to her cheek.
"What 'rising star,' aren't you embarrassed?"
Su Zimai crossed her arms, wrinkled her nose, and shot her a sideways glance.
"Using the Diaper Demon as the ace, your team indeed shows promise," Black Cocoon thought to himself, sighing silently as he considered sparing a bit of face for his sister in a crowd, otherwise, he would have started teasing long ago.
"By the way, I've heard that the Train Demon can create a time-space tunnel independent of the outside, freely traveling within it, thus achieving high-speed transit between two cities or even the poles of the world,"
Black Cocoon said, turning his head to glance out the window.
Amidst the overlapping lights and shadows of the tunnel, the Train Demon soon plunged into a time-space rift.
When they came back to their senses, the dark red train body was already rushing through a bizarre tunnel.
Looking out the window, they could occasionally glimpse the Pearl Tower of Reykjavik, the Empire State Building in New York reaching into the clouds, the brightly lit streets of Paris, and the Eiffel Tower towering like a giant in the city center.
Black Cocoon retracted his gaze, speaking wistfully, "Seeing it today, I didn't expect it to be true."
"Of course... as a vehicle, the Train Demon is impeccable," Ke Qirui smiled slightly, "In this respect, I am quite confident that no vehicle in the world compares to the Train Demon."
"Very unfortunate, I don't concur with this notion," Black Cocoon shook his head.
"Oh?" Ke Qirui raised an eyebrow, "Mr. Black Cocoon, you are indeed well-informed. What other mode of transport could possibly surpass this giant beneath us in speed?"
"Somersault Cloud."
"The Somersault Cloud?"
Ke Qirui raised her eyebrows and then lifted her gaze from under the brim of her hat to look at Black Cocoon.
She asked, "Mr. Black Cocoon, are you perhaps talking about... Mythical Level tales?"
Black Cocoon remained silent for a moment, then turned his head to meet her curious eyes.
"Miss Ke, my situation does not allow me to reveal much about this matter to you," he said solemnly, "but I must warn you, within this 'red light operation,' it is very likely... or rather, certainly, there will be adversaries tougher than the White Crow Travel Brigade."
"Catastrophe Level?"
"Exactly."
Su Zimai thought for a moment, frowned, and interjected, "But... the Red Light is just a Tier Two Exorcist and isn't top-tier among wanted criminals, why would it attract Catastrophe Level individuals?"
"There are many elements involved, you'd best maintain a distance from the truth," Black Cocoon advised, "In conclusion, in our collaboration this time, there is a necessary condition... If I call it off, you must temporarily retreat, can you do that?"
Upon hearing this, Xu Sanyan immediately couldn't sit still, "Who do you think you are? Not even willing to make things clear, yet issuing commands here?"
Lin Zhengquan kept his arms folded and eyes closed solemnly, "Xu Sanyan, when the captain tells you not to speak, then don't speak... follow the captain's instructions. How many times do I have to say it before you understand?"
"Tch," Xu Sanyan clicked his tongue.
Su Zimai remained silent.
She understood Black Cocoon's capabilities; this guy seemed able to predict the future, as each event's trajectory would align with his words. If Black Cocoon said there were issues, then there would certainly be problems during the capture of the Red Light.
Thinking of this, Su Zimai shook her head, somewhat puzzled why she trusted this guy so much, maybe because he had saved her once.
Black Cocoon ignored the reactions of the other three, staring intently at Ke Qirui's face.
In the Ghost Train Corps, the opinions of others were inconsequential to him; he only needed to convince the captain.
Ke Qirui contemplated for a moment, then lifted her gaze from under the brim of her hat, looking calmly at Black Cocoon.
She said, "Alright, Mr. Black Cocoon, I agree to your condition. As long as you call it off, our operation will temporarily cease."
"Having a sensible partner is indeed the best, Miss Ke," Black Cocoon crossed his arms and spoke in a muted tone, "Now, let's discuss how we should go about capturing the 'Red Light'."
