I don't wanna talk to you right now, Grimoire.
The book, seemingly sensing my irritation, hovers around me like a wannabe Tinker Bell. But I don't physically do anything to it, specifically because my sister is currently awake.
With a small smile on my face, I try to keep my sister standing up straight as well. She learned how to walk on her own, but my parents have yet to really baby-proof the house, and my sister is naturally explorative.
I assume, due to my perks, I was naturally taller than her by a couple of inches—which I assume would become more obvious as we grew up. Holding onto her hand, I direct her into the chair in the study.
Zatara had his own room, and I assume that he held secret libraries in there. From the few glances I could get, it looked entirely normal, but I assume it's either locked behind some kind of secret mechanism or illusion.
Sindella had begun to go to work much more often, and while she left a babysitter, the first one ended up trying to steal from my family. I knew the girl wasn't some kind of sorceress-in-training, as she was mostly just looking for the money she assumed my father made during his shows.
It was then I realized how heavily fortified my father's study is because as soon as she tried to enter the room and take a crack at the safe, she immediately got up as if possessed, walked to the kitchen, and reported herself for trying to steal.
The police then showed up, confused by the entire thing, and saw the girl just sitting there in the kitchen, dead-eyed. As soon as the police asked her some questions to make sure that it wasn't a prank call, they took her in. And as soon as she left the premises, I saw her eyes return to normal from our bedroom window, and she soon began to scream bloody murder. Soon enough, the police were forced to tase her.
To be honest, I would say the funniest part about that day was when I used the phone to call Mom, using the museum's phone number. She knew that I could talk, but she probably didn't know I already knew how to use the phone.
As soon as I told her what happened (in probably the worst way I could in terms of articulation), she immediately told me to get back in my room with my sister and wait. I didn't hang up the phone, but I did as she asked.
When she came back, Zatanna had been napping the entire time the whole thing was going on, and I made sure to put some earmuffs over her ears when the woman began to scream, so as not to wake her up. Sindella then immediately ran into the room and took us both into a very tight embrace.
After checking us over, she immediately used some kind of talisman—I assume Zatara made it for her—to contact him in case of emergencies.
And as if he was always there, Zatara appeared. After hearing about what happened, he sighed in frustration, but he didn't appear all that mad, which makes sense as this was just going to be more of an annoyance. When I asked why the woman became so weird when she touched the safe, Zatara, almost amused, looked me in the eye and said this:
"There was a certain spell, you could say, on that safe that makes people regret things. You could say it's like magic."
I could almost see the SpongeBob meme right now.
After he checked us over, he made some calls and said that since the woman had confessed and tried to resist arrest, she'd end up going to jail for a couple of years. But then came the most comic book thing ever: it turns out the person my mother hired to babysit us had been knocked out by the woman attempting to steal from us and had her identity assumed. This only worked because my mother never met the babysitter face-to-face.
After that, Sindella decided to make her job an in-home thing, which definitely proved to me that she was handling the books for the museum.

"Brotha… Why are we weading again?" Taken from my memories, my sister, who is currently sitting next to me in my father's large library chair, looks at me curiously. I simply look at her and say:
"I'm looking for treasure."
She then gives me a confused look.
"What's tweasure?"
To be honest, I almost seemed a bit flabbergasted by the question, but I didn't show it.
"Treasure is good things—stuff you'll want, like the candy you always try to get Mom to buy you."
At that, she tries to slap me on the chest, but to be honest, it's more cute than painful.
"Candy is amazing. Brotha is jealous."
My eyebrows slightly raised at the fact that she knew what "jealous" was, but I assume she must've heard it from Zatara when he talks about some of his fans.
"Well, you see, Z, how can I be jealous when I know that my teeth aren't going to fall out in the future?"
After hearing about how she would lose her teeth, she tries to grip the few teeth that she has right now in fear, and as she gives me a look that spells absolute horror, I explain:
"You see, Z, if you eat too much candy, your teeth will rot straight out of your mouth and fall. Now imagine trying to eat candy with no teeth. That's why Mom doesn't feed us too much candy."
As if I had just relayed some divine prophecy, Zatanna looked down grimly as I began to laugh.
Seeing that I was joking, she then pouted, but after a couple of minutes, she became interested in the book I was reading. She probably couldn't understand a word of it, but at least she seemed interested.
To be honest, we just spent most of the day in the library, but soon enough she became tired. After dinner, she went to bed. And just to make sure that my parents didn't think I was too weird for reading books that were definitely years ahead of what I should be doing, I always made sure to cover the smaller ones with larger children's books if they ever came near the library.
And while Zatara had set up surveillance, it was mostly meant for outside of the apartment, in his study, in my parents' room, and in our bedroom.
The only reason I knew where the defenses were was because of that woman who tried to steal from my father. I overheard my mother and Zatara talking about updating them.
That and my father had begun his adventure into superheroics, which began to take up more and more of his time. While my mother and sister definitely felt this lack of time, I was different. It's not like it's the first time I had to deal with missing parents.
Even in my life before this, my family never really understood my interests. They were thankful that it was nothing really weird, but it was mostly in one ear and out the other for most of my childhood.
It got slightly worse when I became an adult, and I never really grew out of my love for magic. Eventually, I adapted and mostly kept my interests to myself, which, to be honest, hurt more than I thought, as I had basically put on a mask for the entirety of my life.
When they passed, we didn't hate each other. We didn't dislike each other. I loved them, but it was mostly a generational difference—or at least that's something I understood later in life.
I spent years by myself, at least in terms of my interests. Due to the ever-changing economy, my parents eventually both had to get jobs to pay for the house and the stuff we needed.
So, as I lay down on the small bed that my father had created for me using his magic (which, to be honest, made me slightly annoyed), I reflected. But to be honest, that was probably my own envy talking.
That and my slight irritation with my Grimoire. While I am definitely happy with the protections and various buffs that I've been getting, I have yet to gain any actual information on magic.
Not to mention the growing feeling of unease I've been experiencing, specifically after my father met Kent Nelson for the first time.
It only happened a few months ago, but when the old man came over, he seemed nice enough—like the old grandfather type. And no, not like the fanfiction Dumbledore type, just a genuinely nice guy. Yet when he looked at me, his eyes narrowed for a few seconds, which I assume must be due to the traces of demonic blood that I now have—or maybe it's because he wasn't able to access my mind due to the effects of my perk, Shielded Soul.
Either way, he didn't really explain. After eating dinner, he left. And while he's been coming over more often, he seemed uneasy with me.
But thinking about all of that aside, the Grimoire continuously sends its pings that it wants to be used.
Making sure there's no one else around, I stop keeping the book floating in the air. I now have enough muscle definition to be able to lift it. The book itself, compared to me, was still very large—almost as big as the largest atlas or encyclopedia.
But I almost hesitate, slightly afraid of being disappointed again. Yet with this unease I've been feeling, this may just be my own paranoia.
The book then fluttered open as it usually does, with its indecipherable language. Even after combing through multiple dead languages—from Enochian to Latin—I still can't make heads or tails of what this is.
And yet the more I look at it, the more I realize that this book holds languages that I won't even be able to learn in this multiverse. But ruminating on the possible metaphysical nature of the language will get me nowhere—at least for now.
So, after a final mental ping from the book, I grant its request.

Tsukihime/Model Student (-100 CP): "If you find yourself regularly skipping class to go on nighttime hunts for vampires or just general adventure, then it pays to be a good student on paper if nothing else. You're a model student, soaking up what teachers say like a dry sponge and speed reading your required studies in but an hour. You learn about twice as quickly as other top students, absorbing academic and mundane skills with very little trouble, even on a time crunch. Supernatural teachings or things like complicated science take more time, but you're still an excellent learner as long as you have a good teacher—whether an actual mentor or a very informative book."

OK, we're getting somewhere here. This isn't a protection, nor is it some artificial looks buff or one that'll make me a sexual predator. We take these. Roll again, my Grimoire, please.
[Rolling… Thank you for saying please.]
But unlike the other perks or buffs, there wasn't any pink or golden light. No, from the book came a majestic blue. The energy began to swirl and swirl until it concentrated itself within the eye of the storm.
As I looked at the surrounding storm, I saw almost an edge of darkness within it. And within it, I saw two eyes staring right back at me.
I had never felt fear like this before. This wasn't a mental attack, nor was it soul-based. No, this was just being within whatever this thing's presence was.
Blue, smoky eyes stared at me with almost a hint of purple. And as we continued to stare at one another, both of us unblinking, I bit the side of my mouth so hard I almost started bleeding—to focus.
And within that moment, I took a step forward toward the abyss.
And the abyss answered:
(Honestly, when I rolled this perk, I could almost hear the electro theme from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 start playing—that and/or "Bury the Light" for my Devil May Cry fans. Seriously, if any of you guys have some time, take a listen to the themes. They are quite amazing.)
Solo Leveling/Awakened (Free): *"As an awakened being, you have the basic qualifications for being a Hunter. That means that you are capable of crossing Gates, fighting monsters, interacting with magical equipment, and have an aura that surrounds you, emitting mana. The larger your power, the more intense the mana aura is. Barring rare exceptions, such as double awakening or other special methods, Awakened beings are usually incapable of raising their power after they awaken.
Mage: Mages carry out great offensive potential, usually taking after an elemental school. And while their physical abilities are low, as long as their mana holds up, they have the potential to be far more damaging and vastly more destructive than any other type.
Note: You start at the level of a D Rank Hunter, or what you would best compare to, whichever is higher. Counter to the description, you can train to increase this if you wish."*

With little offense to the grimoire, I immediately silenced the mental question as the swirl of energy that was so chaotic and intense then entered my being, as both my eyes and mouth became the repositories of the power.
It felt as if I had access to some kind of super stimulant—the energy just never seemed to end. I could feel it course through my entire body, awakening something deep within, as cringe-worthy as that sounds in my mind right now.
After a couple of seconds that felt like hours, I was lowered back to the ground after realizing that I had been lifted off the ground.
And as I stand in my bedroom, I feel different…
"Hahaha…hahah…HAHAHAHAHA!" The laughter just never seemed to end, as I had never felt so happy. I was thankful that my father had put silencing arrays around each one of our rooms for privacy—if he heard me laughing like a maniac, they would immediately be running into my room thinking someone else was there.
I wasn't a very volatile child, barely making a groan of annoyance, yet in this moment, I just couldn't stop laughing. As soon as I felt the power settle within me, focusing around my heart, I began to feel the energy coiling through my veins.
And as I tried to direct it, sparks of electricity began to form at the tips of my fingers…
Well, it seems I understand what type of mage I am. And as I continued to just let the sparks flow across my body, I walked out of my room. In fact, I walked to the rooftop of our house, and as I felt the rain pour down from the storm overhead, I felt energy beginning to boil at the ends of my fingertips. And in a way that I just couldn't understand yet, I released everything I'd been holding back.
Lightning shot into the sky, causing the surrounding thunderclouds to be filled with so much light that you would think someone had just launched a small nuke into the sky.
I laughed like a maniac high off his own supply, but the feeling lasted for only a couple of minutes, as I then felt more exhausted than I had ever been.
"Ha…ha…ha…" Breathing heavily, I just laid there as the rain created puddles on the roof, and I just stared into the lightning-filled sky. The feeling within my heart was empty now, but I could feel it slowly but surely refilling.
And it may have been my imagination, but I felt that the container for my magic had gotten ever so slightly larger. It was strange, kind of like gaining a shadow heart if that makes any sense. It holds the same place as my actual heart, but its heartbeat is the same as my own.
Both of which were increasing rapidly due to my excitement. Thankfully, it was nighttime, and my parents were asleep. Well, I know that my mother is asleep. Zatara is probably on the opposite side of the country doing one of his magic shows.
But as I laid down, I lifted my hands in front of my face, seeing those same small sparks. Nothing had ever felt so satisfying. It was like going to one of those rage rooms. And to be honest, this feeling truly did make me understand my mantra in life: magic is everything.
However, realizing that I have to head back inside, I climbed back through the window that is in the attic that leads to the roof. And after climbing down from the attic, I head into the bathroom next to my room and begin to dry myself off.
And to cover my tracks, I make sure to wipe up the water I tracked in. And after cleaning all that up, I put the towel back where it was, and after walking back into my room and closing the door as silently as I could, I sat back down on my bed.
I could feel what I would assume to be some type of mana exhaustion. And to be honest, is it weird that I find being so low on magic fulfilling? But as the manic smile makes its way to my face, I realize that my grind is only just beginning.
Mentally yelling for the grimoire to reappear, it is summoned right in front of my face, and it appears to be vibrating in happiness. But ignoring that, I still have 600 choice points, so I'm willing to spend it all! Ride the wind streak, baby!

DC Comics Most Common Superpower: (-200 CP): "Superheroes are larger than life, that's just a statement of fact. They don't look like the average man or woman off the street—they're…super. And so are you. You are quite simply attractive enough to have your visage immortalized in myth and legend. Between a chiseled and appealing body, a winning smile, a natural charisma and charm, as well as a lovely, lovely voice and body language that radiates strength, your aesthetics are on the verge of being a bonafide low-level superpower. This is the sort of beauty that would be considered appropriate for the legendary heroes of Greek myth, the most divinely charming of demigods, or "acceptable" in Heaven. And in a rather understated example, it's this level of charm that makes Superman's handsomeness so apparent that villains have been known to yell about it while running away from him. Not only is he the gold standard to the general public's approval of metahumans, in some iterations, even his own cousin unconsciously recognizes him as their ideal man, and unsurprisingly, many villainesses are unable to keep their hands off him."
…
…
(I would really love to tell you guys that I'm fucking with him, but I'm really not. His luck is just this bad—or is it good?)
You know what? I got 600 more points. I don't care about a roll like this, even though a small part of me is afraid that with my rugged handsomeness at this level, I might end up looking like the freaking GigaChad. Roll again!

Harry Potter/Clean Blooded: (-100 CP): "You simply, magically, do not get sick. You are always free from illnesses and diseases."

This is only 100 choice points?! This is immunity to any and all illness and disease! What?!
(Yes, be happy, main character. I had to roll the grimoire over 20 times because you kept getting increased beauty perks.)
I have a feeling I should be thanking somebody, so after sending a prayer to the ether…
But seeing that I don't want to lose my momentum, I send the signal.

To be honest, I'm trembling with excitement. I wonder what I'm going to get next: a weapon of cosmic power, access to some kind of Multiverse-level being, or maybe even something more?
Worm CYOA v17/Chef Supreme: (-100 CP): "With the ability to create incredibly tasty food from even the most basic ingredients, your culinary mastery transcends ordinary boundaries. Not only can you transform simple fare into mouthwatering delights, but you also gain a heightened sixth sense to perceive the unique sense of taste possessed by those around you. This uncanny ability allows you to tailor your creations to suit individual palates, ensuring that every dish brings unparalleled satisfaction to anyone who partakes.
But your culinary prowess extends even further. By infusing mundane food with tantalizing taste enhancements from your touch, you have the power to make any dish irresistibly delicious, surpassing the addictive allure of even the most potent substances. The flavors you create are so enchanting and captivating that they leave a lasting impression, forever etching your culinary creations into the memories of those fortunate enough to experience them. With each bite, you transport others into a world of culinary ecstasy, where food becomes an extraordinary sensory journey."
[400 CP Remaining (The creator is stunned by your terrible luck…)]
The book then proceeds to shower my mind in thousands of different ways to make my food taste better. And I also have the feeling that if I travel to other worlds, I'll gain access to more recipes…. You know what? I'm just done at this point. Fucking roll the next perk, please.
[Rolling…Sorry, User]
Ben 10/Prototype Process: (-200 CP): "Science is a learning process, and sometimes that learning process involves explosions, malfunctions, or idiots messing with things they shouldn't. Well, they used to, anyways. When technology you've built or used would normally suffer a malfunction or an experiment would become a disaster, it will instead create a harmless inconvenience instead of blowing up in your face. A device's sensitive power core being struck would see it shut down immediately, a DNA serum you inject into yourself gives you mild indigestion instead of mutating you into a horrible monster, and so on. If a result would be entirely negative for you, the impact is dulled to a comical accident instead of something that could endanger your life and those of others. How lucky for you."
[200 CP Remaining]
OK, I think I'm done…. Book, I love you, but you are probably one of the biggest trolls I have ever met. I love you, though—no homo…
The book then expands its energy to a field around me instead of heading directly into me, which I assume must be some type of conceptual field that makes it so my experiments will only fail in a minor way and not cause, like, a biochemical outbreak or a world-ending event. Well, at least I won't be having Reed Richards-level fails.
And as the book slowly hovers down into my arms, I continuously use my lightning in one hand while holding the book in the other. To be honest, just watching the lightning arc across my hands is enough to bring me back to high spirits. I can even feel that every time I use it, it becomes just a bit stronger, more efficient.
An image of me spawning a lightning spear like a certain Lord of Light comes to mind, but for now, this is enough. At least, again, for now…

Today is a pretty special day. It seems like my sister is finally able to consistently access her magic.
Zatara at least once a week takes my sister into his office to begin training her. Sindella helps to make me not feel left out, but to be honest, it almost makes me feel bad to think that I really couldn't care less.
I even expressed this to my mother, that I'm happy for her. And the smile on her face made me feel much better, but it does feel like a bit of gaslighting that she thinks I'm more mature when I know that I'll eventually be able to do what she does at an even stronger level.
My training has allowed me to increase my strength to a C-class hunter—at least in terms of my mana level physically. Sadly, I have yet to increase my limits on that front. I've been trying to create a form of reinforcement using the energy from my own heart, and while I have seen some success, it doesn't last very long.
Reinforcement is much more complicated than I can imagine. In the beginning, I naïvely thought that it was simply just sending magic into various parts of the body, but no—you not only have to understand what part you want to send it to, you need to understand how to fix each individual cell in every singular part. So either this is a limitation of my current magic, or I'm not thinking of something. I'm missing something.
However, for now, my mother's cooking will have to do.

I pray that the creator of the grimoire grants me the patience to deal with all of this.
The only saving grace is that my sister is here, and it seems that, thankfully, due to the existence of our family's magical blood, she is developing intellectually a decent bit faster than our peers.
"Gale! Watch as I summon high-velocity water balloons!" After muting the incantation, she manages to summon ten water balloons before falling to the ground in exhaustion while I slowly clap for her. To which she smiles at me, but that smile promises pain in the future.
And then, with a whispered incantation and a flick of her wrist, guess where all of those summoned water balloons were aimed at? If you guessed me, you win one cookie.
But for now, I'm going to let her enjoy herself.
(OK, that's another chapter done. Don't worry, the next one will be coming out soon, and we shall continue with the time skips. And to be honest, my main character's luck is so garbage, I sometimes have to spend over 15 minutes just to roll any decent perks.)
