Chapter 457: [455] Astarte
Koyomi Shizuka left, but August's words had clearly left a mark on her. This self-proclaimed "Demon King," who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere, now aimed to conquer the entire world, with Itogami Island as his first stepping stone. This was far from good news. The world had only recently achieved a fragile peace, thanks to the "Sanctuary Treaty" brokered by the First Primogenitor, which allowed humans and demons to coexist in a delicate balance.
As time passed, evening fell, and under August's watchful gaze, a fire broke out in one of the districts of Itogami Island. The flames spread rapidly, their glow stark against the darkening sky.
"August, what's that?" asked Kanon, peering through the large window at the distant blaze.
"That's a familiar setting things on fire. It's the work of that terrorist Natsuki has been chasing," August replied calmly.
"A terrorist?"
"Yes, someone who will stop at nothing for their so-called faith."
"Faith?" Kanon murmured, her expression thoughtful. She had once held onto faith herself, but it had failed her when she needed it most. It was August who had saved her, and from that moment on, he had become her everything—a new kind of faith.
In the distance, within the abandoned warehouse district, flames engulfed the area. From the inferno, a fiery bird emerged, radiating a significant amount of magical energy. This was the familiar of an old-generation vampire, not among the strongest, but still formidable.
The surrounding warehouses, long abandoned, were now consumed by the spreading fire. Without intervention, the flames threatened to reach the streets. The automatic fire suppression systems, mostly broken due to years of neglect, offered no help.
"Finally, they've made their move again. This time, they've targeted an old-generation familiar. How bold," Natsuki remarked with a smirk as she received the report at the Special Zone Defense Force headquarters. She immediately sprang into action.
Meanwhile, at the heart of the blaze, a male vampire stood atop a crumbling structure, his fiery bird familiar by his side. The flames around him were his doing.
"Damn it, who are you?!" the vampire shouted, his voice a mix of anger and fear. In the recent skirmishes, his familiar had been consistently overpowered, leaving him both furious and unnerved.
Just moments ago, his attack had failed, igniting the surrounding area. But his enemy had vanished without a trace, leaving him anxious and on edge.
"Command: Capture the familiar. **Rosario Phantasm**," a voice suddenly rang out.
The vampire turned, only to be met with a massive, translucent arm made entirely of magical energy. The arm struck him, sending him flying. Another spectral hand reached out and seized the flaming bird familiar.
The familiar struggled fiercely, but it was no use. As it writhed, its magical energy was rapidly drained. The once-mighty bird shrank until it disappeared entirely.
When the chaos subsided, the silver arms retracted, revealing their user—a young girl who appeared to be no more than a teenager.
"Well done, Astarte," said a burly man in his thirties, clad in armor with a cloak draped over half his body. This was Rudolf Eustach, the mastermind behind the recent vampire attacks on Itogami Island.
The girl, Astarte, was an artificial lifeform he had created. Her purpose was to attack vampires and steal their familiars' magical energy. Although Astarte had a familiar implanted within her, her body was too weak to sustain it without external sources of power.
*Clang!*
Suddenly, chains shot out from all directions, binding both Astarte and Rudolf tightly.
"These chains... and this spell... You must be the famous 'Witch of the Void,' Natsuki Minamiya," Rudolf said, his tone calm despite his predicament.
"An alchemist from the North, I see. You're well-informed," Natsuki replied coldly.
"I'm honored that the Witch of the Void herself has come to arrest me."
"You're a dangerous terrorist who's been sneaking around. Of course, I'd come personally."
"I won't deny that. But all of this is for our sacred mission. Even you, Witch of the Void, cannot stand in our way. Astarte!" Rudolf shouted.
"Command accepted. Executing: **Rosario Phantasm**!" Astarte responded.
A massive, rainbow-hued arm burst forth from her, shattering the chains that bound them.
Natsuki's eyes widened in shock. She recognized Astarte immediately—an artificial lifeform. But what horrified her was the familiar implanted within the girl.
"You... You implanted a familiar into an artificial lifeform?!" Natsuki's voice trembled with anger. Familiars consumed their hosts' life force, and artificial lifeforms were already fragile creations. Astarte's lifespan must have been drastically shortened.
"She was created for this purpose. This is her raison d'être," Rudolf said coldly.
"You're despicable," Natsuki spat, her anger boiling over. As a teacher, she had always cared deeply for children. Seeing Astarte treated as a disposable tool ignited a murderous rage within her—a feeling she hadn't experienced in years.
"Kill her, Astarte."
"Command accepted. **Rosario Phantasm**."
Two massive silver arms emerged from Astarte's back, glowing with a rainbow hue. Having just absorbed the energy of an old-generation familiar, Astarte was now brimming with power.
Natsuki clenched her fists, her resolve hardening. She would not let this monster continue to exploit an innocent life. The battle was far from over.
