Chapter 432: [430] Connection
At Saikai Academy, the afternoon sun streamed into the top-floor office of the administrative building during the last class of the day. Natsuki Minamiya's normally composed face was plastered with exasperation as she stared at August.
"You were gone for just a few hours. And now look at the chaos you've caused again."
She pinched the bridge of her nose, clearly holding back frustration.
The entire area surrounding Keystone Gate—several kilometers in radius—had been thrown into disarray. Everyone within that range had collapsed into unconsciousness for nearly thirty minutes, followed by over an hour of pure confusion and panic.
Keystone Gate wasn't just any location; it was the central hub of Itogami Island. What on earth had possessed August to stroll into such a critical area and knock out half the population with his sheer presence?
Still, there was a silver lining, even if a small one.
Her long-time adversary, the Lion King Agency, had once again suffered a humiliating loss. The Sword Shaman they'd sent had been utterly overpowered, and even their ace operative, Ancient Song, had tasted defeat at August's hands. That part, at least, brought her some satisfaction.
"Can I ask you one favor?" Natsuki said, trying her best to suppress the irritation bubbling inside.
"Of course, Natsuki-chan! What's a favor between us? Just say the word," August replied casually, leaning back with a smirk.
Natsuki's eye twitched at his overly familiar tone, but she pressed on. "I need you to tone it down. Stop stirring up trouble! Do you have any idea how many explanations I've had to give today to cover for you?"
Despite her calm demeanor, it was obvious she was holding back an explosion of anger.
August, ever the embodiment of chaos, raised his hands in mock surrender. "This one wasn't my fault. Honest! I was just sightseeing when one of the Lion King Agency's Sword Shamans openly started tailing me. She even had the nerve to declare she was my 'observer,' tasked with watching my every move. Wouldn't you be annoyed?"
"Observer? What is this, a matchmaking agency?"
"Exactly! They're basically a matchmaking agency at this point. Sending women left and right—they might as well rebrand."
Natsuki coughed, biting back a laugh at how unexpectedly accurate the comparison felt. "Regardless of what you think of them, why did you have to knock out everyone around Keystone Gate? Do you have any idea how much chaos you caused?"
"Well, I may have… uh, slipped up a little. I just let a bit of my aura leak out. How was I supposed to know it'd be that overwhelming?"
Natsuki didn't buy it for a second. She had seen August fight firsthand, whether it was during the Magecraft Guild incident or the skirmish at Saikai Academy. Not once had his power ever inadvertently affected the surroundings.
But this time, the repercussions were massive. At Keystone Gate, his power had left a significant number of people unconscious, effectively disrupting Itogami Island's central administrative functions for over thirty minutes. The ripple effects would be felt for days.
"I don't care if it was intentional or not. This is the first and only time you'll get away with something like this. Do it again, and I won't hesitate to hold you accountable."
"Sure, sure. Got it," August replied nonchalantly, his tone dismissive.
Natsuki's eye twitched as she glared at him. He was infuriating, utterly impossible to deal with. If only she could overpower him—she'd have strangled him on the spot. But she knew better. For now, all she could do was seethe quietly.
'Ding, ding, ding!'
The chime of the final school bell interrupted the tense atmosphere, signaling the end of classes and the beginning of dismissal.
Without missing a beat, August sprang to his feet, ignoring Natsuki's visible frustration. He was already halfway out the door before she could get another word in.
School was out, and he had somewhere to be.
He had to pick up Kanon Yase, his self-proclaimed little fan. Ever since he had helped her reincarnate as a member of the Divine Race, being around her gave August a strange mix of exhilaration and satisfaction.
It wasn't just about her adoration. As someone born of darkness and sin, there was something uniquely thrilling about bringing light and purity under his influence.
It was a sensation he hadn't even experienced in the High School DxD world. There, angels had always been off-limits for him. Their fall from grace was far too unstable, especially after the death of the Biblical God, which had severely weakened the system preventing their corruption.
But here, in this world, he didn't have to hold back. Kanon's transformation into a goddess had given him the perfect opportunity to explore this newfound thrill. And he wasn't about to let it slip away.
Even a single stray thought—something as fleeting as the images conjured by an adult film—could tip an angel into falling.
To take an angel as one's own was an almost impossible task. Even if one succeeded, the act itself would almost guarantee their fall. A pure angel might enter the bridal chamber, but by the next morning, they'd inevitably awaken as a fallen one.
This was one of the reasons why Kokabiel had such misplaced confidence in his ambitions.
Following the end of the Three Factions' war, angels, demons, and fallen angels had all suffered catastrophic losses.
The angels had lost God, leaving them unable to create new members. Meanwhile, the demons had lost their original Demon Lords, turning pureblooded demons into rare treasures. Both factions faced the grim prospect of dwindling populations.
In stark contrast, the fallen angels experienced an unexpected surge. Without the God of the Bible to enforce the divine protection that once prevented their fall, angels began succumbing to corruption more frequently.
Over decades, the overall strength of the fallen angels grew steadily. Unlike angels or demons, fallen angels could procreate not only among themselves but also with other species.
This development emboldened schemers like Kokabiel, who viewed Azazel's restraint as a missed opportunity.
But only Azazel truly understood the grim reality. The fallen angels lacked the foundational strength to back such bold ambitions.
Unlike the angels, who still had the Four Great Seraphs, or the demons, who boasted two Super Devils and numerous Demon King-class entities, the fallen angels had only Azazel himself—a lone Devil King-class powerhouse holding everything together.
To provoke a war under such circumstances wasn't just reckless; it was suicidal.
August arrived at the middle school division shortly after, where Kanon Yase was already waiting for him.
Ever since her transformation into a member of the Divine Race, her personality had shifted noticeably. The once timid and shy girl had grown more confident, though she still retained the grace and purity that had earned her the title of the middle school's "Saint." Her new angelic aura had even earned her a second nickname—"The Angel."
"August-oniisan!"
As soon as she spotted him, Kanon's face lit up with a radiant smile. She sprinted toward him, her silver hair catching the sunlight.
August caught her effortlessly in his arms, lifting her slightly as if she weighed nothing. Around them, the stares of their peers burned like a hundred tiny spotlights.
The boys' eyes were glued to Kanon, dazzled by her angelic presence. Meanwhile, the girls' gazes lingered on August, captivated by his commanding presence and good looks.
The peculiar relationship between the two only fueled the intrigue.
To the onlookers, August and Kanon were the picture-perfect siblings. Despite their differing hair colors and lack of familial resemblance, they seemed like a matched set.
Both were impossibly attractive, the best of the best in their respective worlds. To most, the idea that they were siblings made perfect sense—how else could such perfection exist if not from the same family?
"How was your day?" August asked, setting her back down gently.
"It was wonderful! How about you, oniisan?"
"Not bad at all," he replied with a small grin.
Their easy conversation and warm connection made the surrounding students' envy practically palpable.
Among the onlookers, Natsuki Akatsuki stood with a wistful expression. Every time August came to pick up Kanon, Natsuki couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy.
They both had older brothers, but the differences were staggering.
Why did her brother, Kojou Akatsuki, have to be such a hopeless case?
To make things worse, Kanon's silver hair matched her angelic demeanor, while August's dark hair only emphasized his mysterious allure.
Natsuki, on the other hand, was stuck with black hair, while her brother—somehow—had silver hair.
It was enough to make her wonder if Kojou was even her real brother.
