Chapter 285 Statue
The flute sound seemed to float from the distant horizon, gentle and ethereal, yet carrying an indescribable magical power.
The people appeared as if they were under an immobilization spell, their originally fierce attacks becoming weak and powerless.
Shen Jingqi and Lin Yue exchanged a glance, a trace of delight flashing in their eyes. "It's the flute sound! Strike back now!" Shen Jingqi shouted, gripping his longsword tight and charging at the nearest enemy. The longsword pierced like lightning, directly through the person's chest. Lin Yue was not to be outdone; her figure flashed, and the short blade in her hand swept across an enemy's throat, splattering blood on her face.
Taking advantage of the moment, they launched a counterattack, weaving through the enemies like tigers descending from the mountain. Those affected by the flute sound could hardly mount an effective resistance, falling one after another. Soon, those mysterious figures were entirely repelled by them.
After the battle, Shen Jingqi and Lin Yue collapsed to the ground, gasping heavily. Their bodies were covered in wounds, and their clothes were stained red with blood.
"This flute sound... what kind of figure is behind it?" Lin Yue asked weakly, raising her head to look in the direction of the sound.
Shen Jingqi had long since noticed a shadow faintly fluttering. The flute sound seemed to emanate from that direction, melodious and mysterious.
"Let's go over and take a look." Struggling to his feet, Shen Jingqi reached out to help Lin Yue up. Leaning on each other, they walked toward the shape in the dense fog.
The fog thickened, like a layer of white gauze isolating them from the outside world. With every step, they felt the ground beneath was somewhat soft, the air around them laden with a damp atmosphere. The flute sound continually echoed in their ears, as if an invisible force was guiding them.
"This fog is so eerie, be careful," Shen Jingqi whispered, tightly gripping the hilt of his sword, vigilantly scanning the surroundings.
Lin Yue nodded, a trace of tension in her eyes. "Who could that be, and what mystery does this flute song hold?"
They cautiously proceeded through the fog. Suddenly, a cold wind blew in, causing the fog to swirl violently, as if an invisible giant hand was stirring it. Shen Jingqi and Lin Yue shivered, pressing close together with eyes full of caution.
Right then, the flute sound abruptly ceased. Silence descended around them, broken only by the sound of their heavy breathing and pounding heartbeats echoing through the fog.
"The flute sound stopped..." Lin Yue whispered, her voice tinged with unease.
Shen Jingqi frowned, his gaze searching the fog. "No matter what, we should keep moving and find out what it is."
They moved several steps forward, and suddenly, a massive silhouette appeared before them. The outline hovered in the mist, like a slumbering giant beast. As they approached, the silhouette grew clearer, and they were astonished to find it was a statue.
The statue stood over two men tall, quietly erect. Its surface was covered in moss, as if it had been here for countless ages. The statue's design was quite peculiar, unlike that of an ordinary human figure, possessing an inexplicable aura of mystery. It slightly leaned forward, hands extended, as if guarding something.
"What... what kind of statue is this?" Lin Yue asked in surprise, stepping forward to closely examine the statue.
Shen Jingqi also moved closer, his gaze sweeping across the statue.
While they were closely observing the statue, suddenly, the statue's eyes flickered. The light was faint, yet in this dim fog, it was exceptionally glaring. Shen Jingqi and Lin Yue were startled, instinctively stepping back a few paces.
"Did you see that? The statue's eyes... moved!" Lin Yue exclaimed in terror, her voice trembling slightly.
Shen Jingqi nodded, his eyes filled with alertness. "It seems something is definitely wrong with this statue, be careful."
They stared intently at the statue, barely daring to breathe. After a while, the statue's eyes flickered a few more times, followed by a low rumbling sound emanating from within it. The noise seemed to originate from deep underground, carrying with it an awe-inspiring force.
"What... what is happening?" Lin Yue asked nervously, clinging tightly to Shen Jingqi's arm.
Shen Jingqi didn't know what was happening either, but he knew they had to stay calm. "Don't panic, let's just wait and see."
As the rumbling intensified, the statue's body began to tremble slightly. Moss fell away from its surface, revealing smooth stone beneath. Suddenly, the statue's hands slowly lifted, pointing in a direction.
"What does this mean?" Lin Yue asked in confusion.
Shen Jingqi furrowed his brow, pondering for a moment. "It seems to be guiding us... could there be something over there?"
They looked in the direction the statue pointed, and in the fog, a narrow path appeared faintly. The path was overgrown with weeds on either side, as if forgotten by the world.
"Should we go take a look?" Lin Yue asked, her eyes filled with both curiosity and worry.
Shen Jingqi hesitated for a moment but eventually nodded. "We're here, might as well check it out. Maybe we'll uncover the secret of this statue."
They carefully followed the path, the dense fog still surrounding them. With each step, the ground felt uneven, intermittently stepping on sharp stones.
"This path is hard to walk. I wonder what's ahead," Lin Yue grumbled.
Shen Jingqi comforted her, saying, "Don't rush, just be careful. Since the statue directed us here, maybe we'll find the answers we're looking for."
They continued for another stretch, and suddenly, an ancient building emerged before them. Hidden in the fog, only a vague outline was visible. Its style was ancient and simple, like a relic from the past.
"What's that?" Lin Yue asked in amazement, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Shen Jingqi saw the building too, a strong curiosity welling up inside him. "Let's go over and take a look."
They quickened their pace towards the building. As they drew nearer, its outline became clearer. It was a temple, the main door tightly closed, engraved with strange symbols.
"These symbols... I think I've seen them somewhere before," Shen Jingqi said, frowning as he searched his memories.
Lin Yue also came closer, carefully examining the symbols. "They really are strange, no idea what they mean."
While they studied the symbols, suddenly, the temple doors began to slowly open. An ancient aura rushed out, as if it had been sealed away for countless years.
