Chapter 148: Sigh
The corridor's dim and hazy lighting stretched his shadow long.
Shen Jingqi looked up at the dim lighting, feeling that today's lights were much duller than usual.
The corridor was silent, with only his footsteps echoing. The sound was low and prolonged, like a sleepless soul in the deep night telling endless sorrow.
After just a few steps, a strange sensation shot through his spine like electricity.
He frowned, a wave of inexplicable unease rising within him. Was it his imagination? Or was there really some unknown secret here?
The school's psychology center was near the west gate, and at night it felt especially silent, yet this silence now made him feel unprecedented unease.
He shook his head, trying to dismiss those absurd thoughts from his mind. Shen Jingqi turned to continue forward, but after a few steps, he couldn't resist glancing back at the tightly closed door. A faint light filtered through the door crack, as if whispering some unknown story.
"Am I being too sensitive?" Shen Jingqi murmured to himself.
He continued walking down the corridor, his pace unconsciously quickening. At the end of the corridor was a window, outside it was a dark night sky. Shen Jingqi walked to the window, stopped and gazed at the outside world.
The night was like ink, with only a few sparse stars twinkling on the horizon. A cool breeze swept by, making Shen Jingqi shiver. He tightened his collar, the inexplicable unease in his heart growing stronger.
Just then, he heard that sigh again. This time the sound was clearer, as if it was right at his ear. Shen Jingqi abruptly turned his head, yet saw only an empty corridor.
"Who's there?" he shouted loudly, his voice echoing down the corridor.
However, the only response he got was a dead silence.
"Did I hear wrong?" Shen Jingqi whispered to himself, trying to use reason to dispel the shadow from his heart. However, that inexplicable feeling wrapped around him like an invisible thread, leaving him restless.
He turned to leave, his steps unconsciously slowing, as if drawn by some force. Just then, the sigh sounded again, clearer and imbued with an indescribable sorrow, as if a call from the distant depths of memory.
Shen Jingqi's heart tightened suddenly, he stopped in his tracks, his gaze searching the empty corridor. The surroundings were silent, only his breathing and the occasional night wind from afar mingling. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his inner panic, but the unease grew like wild grass in his heart.
Anxiety welled up in Shen Jingqi's heart, he hurriedly ran to the other end of the corridor. He ran while glancing back, fearing something might chase him from behind.
Finally, he reached the staircase. This was the only way down to the first floor. Shen Jingqi took a deep breath, gripped the handrail tightly, and walked down step by step.
The sound of his footsteps echoed in the stairwell, sounding particularly piercing. Shen Jingqi tried to stay calm, but fear flooded his heart like a tide. He didn't know what he was afraid of, only instinctively wanting to escape this place.
Finally, he reached the bottom of the stairs. The first-floor lobby was pitch black, with only a few strands of moonlight streaming through the windows onto the floor. Shen Jingqi groped his way carefully forward, afraid to step on anything that would make a sound.
At this moment, he heard a faint noise. The sound seemed to come from the other end of the lobby. Shen Jingqi held his breath, listening carefully.
"Meow~" A weak cat's meow broke the night's silence.
Shen Jingqi's heart relaxed, it was just a cat. He laughed self-depreciatingly, thinking he was being a bit paranoid.
At Shen University Campus, stray cats were often seen.
Because they all belonged to an organized group, the Cat Association, they were very friendly towards people.
However, just as he was about to turn and leave, that sigh sounded again. This time the sound was not only clear but also filled with resentment and despair.
Shen Jingqi's face turned pale instantly. He widened his eyes, looking around, trying to locate the source of the sound. However, the surroundings were pitch black, and he couldn't see anything.
"Who? Who's there?" he shouted loudly, his voice trembling slightly.
The response he got was still only dead silence.
Shen Jingqi felt his heart being tightly gripped by an invisible hand, making it almost impossible to breathe. He stood in place, not daring to move, fearing that any slight motion might disturb that unknown presence.
In front was the biology building!
Just then, Shen Jingqi suddenly thought of Cong Nanxue.
Cong Nanxue often appeared in the biology building.
She even appeared in Li Baiyu's father's office.
"Could it be Cong Nanxue?" A thought surged in Shen Jingqi's mind.
"Cong Nanxue..."
Shen Jingqi involuntarily whispered the name, it danced on his tongue like a spell. It seemed to be the key connecting reality and the unknown, forcing him to face this sudden fear.
He walked briskly down the corridor, each step seeming to tread on the edge of an unknown abyss. At the end of the corridor, a partially open window allowed the moonlight to cast a silver glow into the gloomy space. Shen Jingqi reached the window, gazing at the pitch-black night sky outside, his heart filled with mixed emotions.
"Could she really be here?"
He hurried toward the main door, shouting Cong Nanxue's name as he ran. However, when he reached the door, he discovered it was locked from the inside.
Shen Jingqi's heart sank, he pounded on the door panel hard: "Cong Nanxue! Are you in there? Open the door!"
The only response he got was the knocking sound echoing in the night sky.
Shen Jingqi was extremely anxious, not knowing if Cong Nanxue was in any danger. He turned, scanning the surroundings, trying to find another exit. However, the windows of this old biology building were all fitted with sturdy iron bars.
Just then, he heard a faint sound. The sound seemed to come from the sixth floor. Shen Jingqi's heart tightened, and he hurried toward the stairs.
He ran straight to the sixth floor, striding quickly down the corridor. At the end of the corridor was Li Baiyu's father's room. Shen Jingqi reached the door, took a deep breath, and then pushed the door open abruptly.
The room was pitch black, with only the moonlight streaming through the curtain gaps onto the ground. Shen Jingqi walked cautiously into the room, afraid to disturb anything.
He walked to the window, opened the curtains. Instantly, moonlight flooded the room. Shen Jingqi looked around but found no trace of Cong Nanxue.
"Cong Nanxue, where are you?" he shouted loudly.
However, the response he got was still only dead silence.
It felt as though something had struck a heavy blow to Shen Jingqi's heart, leaving him barely able to stand.
