Chapter 16: Chapter 16 – A Wonderfully Developed Plot
Strictly speaking, the anti-hero Erica Narcissus is a being of chaotic neutrality.
Like most superheroes with tragic pasts, Erica's life was marked by deep resentment and misunderstanding. Her father, stubborn and distrustful, believed she was the product of his wife's infidelity. As a result, after her mother died in childbirth, Erica grew up without love or proper education. It wasn't until a genetic test confirmed their blood relation that her father realized his mistake—but by then, it was too late. The damage was done. Erica had already developed a rebellious and unruly nature.
After her father died in a kidnapping incident, Erica fell into darkness. She was manipulated by The Hand, an ancient and secretive ninja cult, who intended to use her as a vessel for the beast god "Black Sky." However, with the help of Stick, the leader of the rival Holy Society, Erica managed to escape. She returned to New York and eventually fell under Kingpin's command, becoming his most fearsome assassin.
For such an extreme anti-hero, Kausu chose the simplest and most direct approach: defeat her first, then talk!
Erica, of course, was furious. She had no concern for collateral damage and immediately swung a powerful punch at Kausu.
"If you only know how to speak with your fists," Kausu said, dodging her attack, "then you've made a very poor choice!"
As he spoke, a sudden thunderstorm erupted from the sky, striking Erica mid-charge. Her entire body convulsed as the electricity surged through her, making her hair stand on end. Before she could recover, a frost shock followed, encasing her in a thin layer of ice, freezing her movements entirely.
"If you take another step forward," Kausu warned, lightning crackling at his fingertips, "I can't guarantee your heart won't be pierced by it."
Breaking free from the ice, Erica's expression finally changed. She frowned, her eyes narrowing. "Who are you? Since when did Matt have a friend as powerful as you?"
"Stick taught you martial arts, but he never taught you wisdom," Kausu said, sitting back in his chair, casually playing with a flickering ball of electricity in his palm. "The Foot Ninjas learned their stealth techniques from London, but that's just a fraction of the Five Elements' true power. Erica, don't fool yourself into thinking the world only consists of guns and hand-to-hand combat."
Erica shuddered. This man—this seemingly ordinary hotel owner—was peering into her very soul, exposing memories she had buried deep within herself.
"You know too much," she said coldly, trying to keep her voice steady. "Maybe you're stronger than I expected, but that's still not enough for you to—"
"Are you talking about Kingpin or the Five Fingers of The Hand?"
Kausu casually dispersed the electric light in his hand. He poured the last of his morning dew wine into a cup, then hesitated before taking out a bottle of Cold Spring Water from behind the counter.
"Drink this," he said, handing it to Erica. "It'll help clear your mind. And… wake you up!"
Erica hesitated but took the bottle. She lifted her gaze, staring intently at Kausu.
"Don't live like a walking corpse," Kausu continued, nodding toward her as he took a sip of his wine. "If you want to fight your fate, do it with courage and determination—not by drowning yourself in alcohol like a drunken, violent housewife."
"H-Housewife?!" Erica's face turned bright red. "No, you've got it all wrong! Matt and I—"
"Hmm, first love is always special," Kausu interrupted, finishing his drink in one gulp. The sweet fruit wine suddenly tasted a bit sour to him. He raised his glass toward her and smirked. "Don't worry. I don't judge relationships, especially those that are lost and found… and lost again… and found again…"
"You don't seem to be afraid of The Hand," Erica observed, changing the subject.
"The power of the human world is insignificant," Kausu said, tilting his head toward the sky. "Real terror exists beyond the solar system..."
Erica had no idea what he meant. She didn't know that Kausu was referring to beings like Dark Titan, Galactus, Knull, Mephisto, and Dormammu. Compared to them, even the mightiest Earth superheroes were insignificant.
"So, this is your safe house?" she asked, glancing around the hotel lobby. Her gaze settled on Carrie, who stood quietly nearby. A mysterious smile played on Erica's lips.
"Hmm. She's a beautiful girl," she commented.
Kausu squinted at her, suddenly on high alert. Had she developed strange preferences during her time with The Hand?
Stick had two students—Matt Murdock, who became the notorious Aquaman of the underworld, and Erica, who, strangely, had no scandals except for her rumored history with Matt. This was very unusual for someone in the Marvel universe.
Kausu quickly signaled to Carrie with his eyes, urging her to retreat. Carrie, puzzled, approached instead.
"Okay, yes, this is my safe house," Kausu finally admitted. Reluctantly, he pulled Carrie behind him, shielding her from Erica's gaze. "But don't assume it's just a hotel. Anyone who dares to mess with it is digging their own grave."
Erica smirked. "I admit, you have unique skills…" Then she suddenly changed the topic. "Your hotel's decor is fascinating. It reminds me of ancient and mysterious tribes—like the Bushmen of Africa, the Asaro of Oceania, or the Gauchos of South America."
She glanced around and added, "Your business is new, but soon, when you get more guests, you won't be able to manage everything with just you and this girl. You'll need a capable manager, a reliable accountant, and security personnel to handle troublemakers."
Kausu's face darkened. Of course, he knew he was short-staffed—but hiring more employees cost money.
Unfortunately, due to his lavish renovations, the compensation money he had received was nearly gone. What was left might only last him six more months—or less!
Erica suddenly flashed a proud smile.
"In that case," she said, "I can recommend an employee. She won't ask for much—just a room and food. In return, you'll get a loyal, capable worker who can handle all those responsibilities. What could be more cost-effective than that?"
Kausu rubbed his chin. It actually sounded like a good deal. One person taking on three jobs with no salary...
"Where is she?" he asked.
Erica grinned and pointed at herself.
"Right here!"
Kausu blinked in disbelief. "You?"
"Erica Narcissus. Graduate of Columbia University, Finance and Trade department. Holder of an internationally recognized accounting certification," she said, winking. "As for my other skills, you can verify them in action."
"Or do you prefer a formal interview?"
There was no need for an interview. As Kingpin's top assassin and a master martial artist, Erica was overqualified for the job.
Still hesitant, Kausu asked, "Where's your room?"
"Upstairs. Third door on the left," she answered casually, already heading toward the staircase. Then, pausing, she turned around and flashed a charming smile.
"From now on, please take care of me, Boss."
Kausu stood there, frozen, watching as she disappeared up the stairs.
What the hell just happened?
Erica—instead of fighting Bullseye for Kingpin's favor or aligning with The Hand—had just become his hotel's lobby manager?!
Carrie, still peeking from behind Kausu, looked up at him.
Her boss's expression kept shifting—first shocked, then excited, then frustrated… until he finally gave up, looking as defeated as a broken man.
