Chapter 13: Chapter 13: A Strange Coincidence
When Coulson, sporting a fresh haircut, arrived at the newly renovated Mulgore Hotel, he was accompanied by a short-haired beauty. As they stepped inside, they spotted a young woman in a waiter's uniform diligently mopping the floor.
"The new waiter? Kaus!" Coulson called out.
"Yes!" Kaus was standing on a chair, hammering nails into the wall. He had been busy all morning—not only had he purchased uniforms for the new hire, but he had also bought a collection of wall clocks in various sizes. His plan was to hang at least one in every room and three in the lobby, ensuring that no matter where a guest stood, they could always see the time.
Catching sight of Coulson, Kaus grinned. "You cut your hair? Hmm, looks good—makes you look energetic!"
He tossed aside the copper ingot he had been using as a makeshift hammer, clapped the dust from his hands, and jumped down from the chair. "Good afternoon, beautiful lady!"
"Agent Maria Hill," Coulson introduced. "This is Kaus Bradford. He'll be the instructor for our elemental course."
Kaus's eyes lit up. Maria Hill—the famous cold beauty of Marvel?
She was taller and more imposing than she appeared in the movies. Her icy demeanor only enhanced her striking features. With a reserved elegance and a stern expression, she exuded a unique, heroic charm.
Hill scrutinized Kaus with a sharp gaze before extending her hand. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Bradford."
Even with Kaus's thick skin, he felt a bit uneasy under her piercing stare. He quickly shook her hand before turning to Coulson. "Phil, when you say 'we'...?"
"Yes! Maria can also resonate with the elements!" Coulson's excitement was evident. "Like you said before, if..."
"Ah, I see!" Kaus cut in, his thoughts shifting to his increasing course fees. His previous wariness of Hill's coldness faded as he rubbed his hands together in anticipation. "Carrie, close the door! No more business this afternoon. You can take a nap or go out… Actually, no, just sleep!"
Carrie obeyed, shutting the door before heading upstairs to her room.
"Where do we start?" Coulson asked eagerly.
"Right here!"
After Maria demonstrated her unique blue flame, Kaus, already aware of the situation, decided not to jump straight into explanations. Instead, he began with the fundamental principles of elemental spirits, detailing the characteristics of earth, fire, water, and wind. He provided an in-depth breakdown of elemental magic, its rules, and its practical applications.
"Now that you understand the origins of the four basic elements, I can explain why Agent Hill manifests blue flames. The element resonating with her body is the most violent aspect of water. Though it's water, it exhibits an entirely different side—like the raging waves of the ocean. Because of this, Agent Hill doesn't need to focus on traditional water-based spells. Instead, fire spells will be her primary technique."
"So," Kaus continued, turning to Hill, "the first spell I'll teach you is Flame Shock, the one Phil learned last week." He then gestured at Coulson with an encouraging look. "Go ahead, show me how well you've been practicing."
Coulson extended his hand, and a small fireball shot forth. Kaus caught it effortlessly. Thanks to the Minotaur's innate Natural Resistance, Coulson's fireball was hardly a threat.
"Looks like you've been putting in the effort!" Kaus nodded approvingly. He then turned to Maria and began explaining the key spell components. When she attempted to cast Flame Shock, what emerged instead was an ice-covered projectile bristling with barbs.
Kaus couldn't help but laugh.
"Try again. As you channel the water element, give it a delayed command—to explode!" he instructed.
A small ice sphere formed at her fingertips and shot forward. As it traveled, countless ice strands burst outward in all directions. The orb continued to spin as it moved, eventually dissolving into a wisp of blue mist that quickly vanished into the air.
Maria Hill, typically composed, showed a rare blush of embarrassment. Meanwhile, Kaus was momentarily stunned.
This isn't a shaman's water healing spell—it's more akin to Frost Shock. If I had to compare it to something in D&D or Diablo, it's similar to the Ice Orb spell.
A surge of excitement ran through Kaus. Am I on the verge of creating a new branch of magic?
His enthusiasm grew, and he clapped his hands. "Very good, Maria! You're more talented than I thought. Do you realize what this could lead to?"
"You could summon an ice tsunami with a single motion, enveloping an entire city in a blizzard more powerful than a nuclear bomb. And unlike conventional weapons, this ability leaves no pollution, no radiation—just the corpses of your enemies and... water."
Then, turning to Coulson, Kaus continued, "And you, Phil! Your passion and righteousness will drive you further down the path of justice. You will burn away all evil! Yes, when your sea of fire spans hundreds of kilometers, darkness will be purified!"
"When Ragnaros, the Firelord, arrived in Azeroth, he split the Redridge Mountains in half in a fit of rage, forming a roaring volcano—the Blackrock Abyss. Phil, you may not have tens of thousands of years, but you possess the same courage and determination!"
Coulson and Hill, both seasoned agents with vast combat experience—and both future directors of S.H.I.E.L.D.—were completely enthralled. Their breathing quickened, their eyes sparkled with an unfamiliar intensity.
Maria, who was hearing such dramatic rhetoric for the first time, found herself unusually excited. Her cheeks flushed with emotion. She didn't even notice that Kaus had stopped calling her "Agent Hill" and had shifted to the more personal "Maria."
"So, how do we further strengthen our abilities?" Coulson asked, his rationality slowly returning.
"It's simple—practice, and keep practicing!"
For Coulson and Hill's training, Kaus had already devised a plan. Since opening a full-scale training ground wasn't feasible, the best approach was to combine minimal spellcasting instruction with extensive meditation. Their priority wasn't physical endurance or combat versatility—it was raw elemental power. As mages, their role was to stay protected behind heavy frontline shields and unleash devastating AOE spells on the enemy.
"So, Phil, find a place near a fire source and meditate to deepen your elemental affinity. And Maria, seek out areas rich in water elements. Try practicing underwater—the increased pressure will help you adjust to your abilities more efficiently."
With that, Kaus looked at their eager faces and smirked.
"Class dismissed!"
For a moment, Coulson and Hill blinked in confusion, then both stood up. Maria, still caught up in the excitement, instinctively moved to bow in gratitude. But as she did, Kaus, having stood up hastily, reached out to support her.
Damn… that was unexpectedly soft...
He withdrew his hand quickly, feigning nonchalance. Coulson, too caught up in his gratitude, dragged Kaus into an enthusiastic conversation, sparing him any further awkwardness.
Maria, however, had already noticed his reaction. She paused, processing the moment. Then, the displeasure that had begun to rise within her suddenly faded.
A rare, amused smile played at the corners of her lips—one that softened her usually icy expression, adding a touch of charm to her frosty
