Monster Lord: The Goblin Offers the Saintess to Me at the Start

Chapter 55: The Boiling Crowd

Sivis noticed that Vikalina had, at some point, sped past him and was now rushing forward again.

What's going on?

He was a bit puzzled.

Sivis didn't overthink it and continued walking towards the family estate at a normal pace.

At the same time, Vikalina had already rushed back to the civilians whose homes had been destroyed.

The sight of the neatly dressed female knight made the civilians somewhat nervous and uneasy.

Vikalina managed to force a smile. "You don't need to worry. I am a knight of the Church's Knight Order. I will definitely help you with your current situation."

"Take this money for now." She handed over the money from selling the pearl necklace without hesitation—despite the fact that it was one of the few pieces of jewelry she had brought from home, she didn't hesitate for a moment.

The civilians were taken aback, and a look of fear crept onto their faces. This was a knight, and not just any knight, but someone from the Church! Despite the female knight's attempt to soften her expression, the civilians remained uneasy and fearful, refusing her offer one after another: "We're fine, we don't need money... Thank you, but really, it's not necessary..."

They dared not accept the kindness of a knight, fearing they might offend this "important figure."

Vikalina had anticipated this reaction and patiently stepped forward to explain: "Perhaps you've seen other members of the Church act differently, but you don't need to worry. I am not like that."

"I took an oath to the True God in my youth, vowing never to stand by when someone is in distress."

"Trust me, take this money to buy some food and get through this tough time." Her tone was firm as she continued to persuade them.

The civilians still wanted to refuse, but seeing the determination of this important figure from the Church, they were too afraid to accept and too afraid to continue refusing.

People in the crowd looked at each other, and the couple who had earlier appeared to be a mother and son stepped forward hesitantly to receive a few silver coins.

Vikalina sighed with relief, knowing that these silver coins would be enough for the family to survive for one or two months.

She then smiled at the other civilians, "Take it, don't worry, this money is really for you."

With the first person leading the way and Vikalina's patient encouragement, a second person, then a third, finally mustered the courage to step forward and accept the silver coins.

As the residents received the money, a glimmer of relief and joy appeared in their eyes.

Vikalina smiled when she saw this.

However, after the initial joy, she noticed a look of confusion and uncertainty flash across their faces—while they hadn't immediately thought about not being hired by the merchant guilds due to the Blood Clan plague, they instinctively knew that the days ahead would be tough. The few silver coins would only buy them a little more time, but their future remained bleak...

There was no hope in their eyes.

The female knight was taken aback, the surprise that had just appeared in her eyes instantly froze, and she pressed her lips together, a look of hesitation flashing across her delicate face.

What should she do?

She felt like she had helped these civilians, but also like she hadn't helped them at all...

Vikalina's slightly improved mood plummeted to the bottom.

She was not helping the commoners for her own satisfaction. She truly wanted to help them get out of their difficult situation. But now, her power is not enough!

Even as a powerful Silver Stage warrior, her past seclusion meant that Vikalina truly had no money to offer. She couldn't sell her own equipment, as those items were theoretically owned by the Church, not by her.

The female knight felt that her identity as a Church Knight was becoming less useful.

She couldn't go to the Adventurers' Guild like ordinary adventurers to accept missions, and for the moment, Vikalina had no way to obtain money.

There was only one option before her: to seek help from the Church, to ask for aid from the Knight Order members who had severed ties with her.

Vikalina hesitated slightly, but a look of determination flashed in her eyes. This would undoubtedly be a humiliating act.

But to save these civilians and help them survive, what did a little humiliation matter?

The only thing that worried her was whether the money would truly reach these civilians in a proper manner after she sought help.

Vikalina hadn't been born into the Church, when she was a common citizen, she knew that civilians who received charity from the Church during famine years were expected to repay the money, with interest, many times over!

Civilians were forced to serve the Church as laborers for years to pay off these debts.

Vikalina didn't care about her dignity, what she feared was that while the civilians might fare better with her around, once she left...

The Knight Order would come to settle accounts!

These people might torture these ordinary folks to get back at her!

Cold sweat broke out on the female knight's body, and her eyes flashed with pain and distress.

She suddenly realized something—she talked about changing the world and saving people, but in reality, she couldn't do it.

Vikalina was skilled at fighting enemies and slaying monsters.

But when it came to how to help civilians suffering from the Blood Clan plague, she was at a loss, not knowing what to do.

She found herself ridiculous, having just lamented that Sivis wasn't the partner she was seeking, and that her future plans would be even more difficult. But with her current skills and abilities, she couldn't accomplish anything!

"What should I do?" Vikalina's face was full of confusion.

She looked around and, for some reason, thought of the elf teacher who had taught her in the Church, remembering the words her mentor had once said.

This woman, who had lived for a thousand years, was an expert in various martial techniques, yet she had the appearance of a young girl. When Vikalina had once asked her, "How can one change the world, change the nobles' exploitation of the common people, and reform the Church's corruption?" the mentor had only smiled bitterly.

"Vikalina, you can only truly understand these things by witnessing them yourself."

"You just need to keep these thoughts in your mind, and that will be enough."

The female knight didn't know what her mentor wanted her to understand.

Now, she understood—many things can't be accomplished with just passion and determination.

Vikalina was shocked to realize that despite her usual fairness and integrity, she was helpless when the civilians faced disaster, unable to provide them with money.

"What should I do? What should I do, teacher..." Vikalina hung her head low.

Many of the civilians, counting the silver coins in their hands, managed to smile—getting the money made them happy, but the confusion in their smiles made Vikalina even more distressed!

The path forward and the path back were both blocked!

Sacrificing her dignity to seek help might not lead to a good outcome...

But Vikalina herself had no means to settle these residents...

Just then, she suddenly felt a gentle breeze, and a figure moved past her.

Vikalina caught a glimpse of Sivis out of the corner of her eye, but she had no time to dwell on who this noble, who wielded pure holy light, really was.

Sivis wasn't the partner she yearned for, nor was he one of those Knight Order members who would actively harm others. He was just an ordinary person.

Vikalina didn't feel resentment or expectation toward him.

She realized that from the beginning, she had been creating her own narrative around Sivis. How could she now turn around and blame him?

Sivis, observing the scene, wasn't particularly surprised.

"Vikalina must have just given these civilians some money. That's so like her."

"But this money probably won't be enough to solve their immediate living problems."

"There are too many people, so each family only gets one or two silver coins."

"It can only cover a month's worth of food."

"More importantly, after suffering from this blood plague, it will be very hard for them to find work."

He silently analyzed.

Sivis admired Vikalina's kindness, but she was still naive—giving money directly was the worst way to address the immediate disaster.

Sivis didn't rush to explain to Vikalina, knowing it would be too difficult to explain economic principles to someone without the necessary background knowledge.

He decided to prove his point through action.

Sivis quietly stepped forward, and many of the civilians noticed his arrival, their faces showing a mix of confusion and joy: "Lord Sivis! Master Sivis is back!"

They were all incredibly excited!

Sivis was different from others!

Not only was he extremely fair, paying wages and granting leave, but he had also hired people with illnesses to work in his factories.

Regular merchant guilds were always cold and indifferent toward the sick, never giving them a chance to work, to avoid the risk of an outbreak.

Now, suffering from the blood plague, these people felt a sense of hope when they saw Sivis!!

Only this great benefactor would give them a chance!

Even if Sivis hadn't done anything yet.

The civilians were a bit confused as they watched this former benefactor set a sign on the ground—most of them couldn't read.

The husband from the previously pitiful couple had been to school. He stepped forward to read the sign aloud:

The Daister family is now recruiting workers to rebuild the family. Daily pay: 5 copper coins. After the family factory is completed, long-term workers will be hired, with a monthly pay of 1 silver coin.

Requirements: Must have basic labor capabilities. No gender or age restrictions. Those who can lend a hand will also enjoy free meals.

As the words were read out loud, hope began to rise in the eyes of the many residents present, and they looked extremely surprised.

They couldn't help but look at Sivis, their voices trembling: "Is it true? Master Sivis, are you really going to hire people again after you've returned?"

"No age or gender restrictions? Can we all come to work? Can my child come too?"

"Women can work too?? Really! We don't even need pay! Just give us a meal to eat!"

Vikalina hadn't yet understood what was happening.

She noticed that the once lifeless and oppressed disaster victims were now cheering, looking overjoyed!

After Sivis placed the sign, the people suddenly came alive!
