Chapter 121: The Weakening of the Disaster
Vikalina couldn't dodge in time, so she raised her knight's lance and gathered power to cut through the holy light.
A powerful explosion directly pushed her back several steps. In that brief moment, the members of the Knight Order had already rushed out dozens of steps under the protection of the priests.
Vikalina was stunned — she hadn't expected that these people would actually fight her head-on just to save their lives.
Her hand gripping the knight's lance was covered in bulging veins, and her eyes grew even more furious, but she still didn't launch another attack.
She clearly knew that the situation right now didn't allow her to get bogged down with these "fellow" soldiers, especially not when there was a Silver-Rank cleric among them. Vikalina was extremely strong among her peers, but taking down another peer with the same rank would still take time.
Plus, the people who were running away were human beings. She couldn't really kill them, so she had to hold back at every turn.
But the threat in the cleric's eyes was unmistakable: if Vikalina blocked them forcefully, they would fight with all their might to eliminate her first. As for whether the defense could hold, they didn't care at all — with so many civilians, the Blood Servant would need several minutes to "digest" them, which was more than enough time for them to delay.
In an instant, Vikalina gritted her teeth and gave up the pursuit. After a few quick turns, she slammed her knight's lance into a Blood Servant, pushing it back and barely easing the pressure on the defense line.
At this moment, the civilians felt as if they had fallen into an icy pit, their expressions full of despair — if even Vikalina couldn't stop the Knight Order and the priests, how could they possibly stand in their way? And the departure of the church members meant the defense was about to completely collapse.
After a few seconds of silence, the civilians completely broke down.
Besides Reina, who was still holding her ground despite her confusion, Vikalina was holding her knight's lance, desperately blocking the monsters while looking panicked — she didn't know what to do. She tried to ignite the "Flame of Salvation" she had lit earlier, but found she couldn't gather any power. The presence of the Sea God still surged within her, making her feel extremely uncomfortable.
The members of the Church had basically completed their evacuation.
The Silver-Rank cleric took one last look at the countless civilians before he left.
The people had long lost any goodwill toward the Church's personnel, yet they still showed a faint look of hope.
But the cleric simply extended his hand and summoned a semi-transparent, owl-like familiar spirit: "I'll use the image of your deaths to ask the Church for help."
He said coldly.
"Provided I can get out alive," he added.
The Silver-Rank cleric knew the chances of survival were slim, but it was slightly better than staying behind to defend the line. He didn't say anything more aggressive, but his indifferent attitude was like a death sentence for everyone present.
At this moment, the front-line civilians had already been pushed back so much their hands were bleeding and their bodies were filled with internal injuries.
The line seemed intact, but in reality, it was already a dead thing — everyone was running away as fast as they could.
Everything.
It seemed like the end was about to come.
But everyone was still mechanically fighting against the enemy, until —
"AAAAA!"
A fierce scream echoed through the air.
The first civilian was wounded by a Blood Servant, and terrifying bloodstains rapidly spread across his body.
As an ordinary person, the blood plague toxin quickly spread through his body. Within less than ten seconds, he would be completely transformed into a Blood Servant.
Vikalina watched this scene in helplessness. She tried her best to rush over to help, but as soon as she left her original position, another civilian nearby let out a scream.
Without the support of the female knight, the sudden increase in pressure made this unlucky person get hit immediately.
Vikalina kept running back and forth, trying to ease the pressure on the front line, but she could only listen to the constant screams around her — more and more people were being infected.
Their lives were now on a countdown, and soon they would become monsters, attacking the very families they had once fought to protect!
At this moment...
The situation had completely fallen apart!
The civilians in the rear were even more desperate, shouting loudly.
"Done for!"
"We can't hold it anymore!"
"What are we going to do? What are we going to do?"
"Lord Sivis, why haven't you come yet?"
...
At first, the people screamed in extreme fear.
Then, they suddenly became quiet.
"Never mind, everyone has done their best up to this point... it's already pretty good."
"Dear, don't worry, we'll be with you soon."
"Baby, don't be afraid. Your dad has been fighting in front all this time, and he's done his best. Don't blame him, okay?"
"You all have worked hard... haven't you heard the Knight Order people say before? This plague is impossible to stop. We've lasted this long, and that's already a miracle."
"If someone survives and makes it back, we'll be considered legends. It's better than just struggling through life in misery."
"It's a bit of a pity, we were so close to making it to Lord Sivis's territory... maybe that's just our fate."
For some reason, the civilians at the moment suddenly felt strangely at peace.
Maybe it was because they had repeatedly faced death and pulled themselves up again, making them less sensitive to it. Or maybe it was because they had been inspired by Reina's desperate fight — if even the personal servant of Lord Sivis was willing to give her life, maybe the Lord had his own reasons for not arriving on time. Why blame him?
The atmosphere took on a strange sense of calm.
It was as if people had accepted their fate, no longer crying or struggling.
Vikalina and Reina watched the scene, their expressions complex — they obviously wanted the people to pass away peacefully, and they understood the defense was already a dead thing. They just hoped that the final moments would be less painful.
But now that the wish had "come true," they couldn't find a way to smile — because they knew for sure: these civilians were now on their final journey.
And the two of them would soon die in this disaster as well — who could actually feel happy?
For Vikalina, the civilians in front of her at least died with dignity, without showing any cowardice. It somewhat matched her idea of what a "knight's final moment" should be.
She felt a bit sorry for her own life, not because she didn't want to sacrifice for the people, but because if she died for Lord Sivis, she might have made a name for herself in history...
Now, I'm just dying a completely ordinary death in this blood plague.
She had fallen into random thoughts: she wasn't afraid of death, just sorry.
Reina, however, didn't feel much sadness. It seemed she had already accepted everything calmly. Even with her silver rank, she hadn't fully changed her mindset — she still saw herself as an average maid.
She thought: maybe I can't do much for Lord Sivis, but as long as I dedicate everything on the path of serving him, I'll already be satisfied. But this sense of satisfaction was gone in an instant — she suddenly realized: the master must have gone through a lot to give me such power, but now I was wasting this opportunity!
I could still be useful to the master, why would I die like this?
In a flash, the girl's face turned dark. The previous sense of release vanished completely.
Reina didn't show any extreme behavior, but she finished off all the nearby Blood Servants, then supported herself with one hand, breathing heavily.
Her body was already covered in cracks — if she couldn't get the Dragon-related Fossils within a day to complete the transformation, she would definitely die.
Reina could only shake her head in regret.
"Master, I still couldn't help you at all..."
She probably didn't know that, in Sivis's heart, her safety was far more important than these hundreds of civilians.
Opportunities to grow stronger could be found again, but Reina, his little maid, was one of a kind — in this life, Sivis would never meet another personal servant like her, someone who could earn his heart, be taught and nurtured, and eventually become the most cherished family member.
In the midst of such a desperate situation, aside from the sounds of monsters, people seemed relatively calm.
It was quite ironic that two loud screams broke the silence — "Why are you doing this to me! No! Please, don't leave us! We're your comrades!" Two members of the Knight Order ran away from the group like lost dogs, chased out of the escape line.
Even though Blood Servants were getting closer to the line, people still couldn't help but glance over at them, their expressions mixed with confusion and sadness.
These two had once been alone with Sylar, and the Knight Order and priests had judged that "they were highly likely to have been infected with the blood plague," so they were forced to stay behind.
They hadn't been infected — Sylar, to ensure the master's plan remained secret, had restrained his killing instinct, afraid that if he infected them, his simple-minded "friends" might expose the plan.
The Knight Order and priests didn't know the truth, they only remembered the disaster Sylar had caused before. To avoid repeating it, they had no choice but to make a harsh decision.
Now, the two were screaming and begging, turning to look at Vikalina, Reina, and the crowd, their faces full of begging: "Wait! Don't attack! We're willing to help! Please, have mercy on us!"
They only felt they were extremely unlucky — just a moment ago, they had seen the cleric pull out the Dragon-related Fossils that Sivis had been searching for, about to crush them and create a dragon-shaped illusion to force their way out.
But...
The situation turned out to be surprisingly good.
The Knight Order had guessed right: Sylar had attracted a large number of monsters, making the escape from the rear much easier.
The cleric didn't rush to use the precious item, and that moment of hesitation allowed the Knight Order and the cleric to deal with the "hazards," kicking them out.
If the breakout had been more difficult, they probably wouldn't have been abandoned so quickly...
But now it was too late to say anything.
Whether they helped or not, the end was the same for the two knights.
Everyone had already accepted their fate.
But on the other side...
The Knight Order and priests who were breaking out were extremely excited because it seemed they had hit the jackpot.
For some reason, the Blood Servants that had been drawn in large numbers by Sylar had now scattered and ran toward some other direction.
All of the Blood Servants moved much slower now, their strength had dropped significantly, and their agility had also decreased, which allowed the Knight Order to easily break through toward the front.
The chance of survival was right in front of them.
A silver-ranked cleric even showed the faintest hint of a smile, and he put the Dragon-related Fossils back into his space ring.
But...
They were a bit confused about what had actually happened.
Why had the Blood Servants suddenly decreased in number? Why had they suddenly weakened? There was really no reason for it at all!
