Chapter 067 | The Little Lycan, Alice
"What are you snooping around here for?" Damien calmly inquired and gestured to Hecate to ease her restraint of the little girl. The crimson-haired vampire nodded in understanding and relaxed her restricting hands. On the other hand, the little one wriggled her body and answered.
"I-I wanted to see the abandoned villages of foolish humans. M-my father told me that they believed the preaching words of some random cult and left their homes during a snowstorm." She continued squirming, prompting Hecate to release the little girl.
Holding her reddish wrists, the little one puffed her cheeks and glared at the crimson-haired vampire. "As expected of the blood suckers, so violent. And what are you?" She turned her eyes towards the young man.
Her perception and senses would never lie to her. The human-like young man in front of her wasn't ordinary at all. He felt like a goddamn Aberrant, pretending to be a human.
"Hey, hey... A kid shouldn't be saying such words." Damien flicked the forehead of the little girl, whose wolf tail straightened as she barely kept her balance without stumbling on the snow.
"It isn't good to view others from their own characteristics. None of us is one-dimensional." He asserted while patting the little one's head. The tiny wolf girl could only hesitantly nod in agreement, but didn't forget to remark. "But don't they suck blood, though? Am I wrong?"
Seeing the innocent expression of the little girl, Damien hesitated for a moment, earning a grunt from Hecate. Coughing to himself, the cunning young man decided to change the subject to avoid a disaster. "In any case, may I know your name?"
The tiny wolf girl turned her head away from him and straightened her body. "My father said that people should introduce themselves first if they want to know someone else's name."
"Besides, I shouldn't talk to human strangers."
"What about non-human strangers?" Damien pointed at himself and looked at Hecate, who crossed her arms and glared at the little Lycan. "Vampires are even worse than humans."
"Don't you know how long our blood feud is?" The little girl huffed, annoyed at even conversing with an arrogant crimson-haired vampire. "It all started hundreds of years ago. When there were no humans."
"While I'd rather not agree to whatever this little pup says, she's right about the blood feud, Damien. It is as if there is an ingrained instinct to dislike another species." Hecate intruded on their conversation, prompting Damien to sigh.
"Regardless of the blood feud... My name is Damien, and her name is Hecate. The two of us belonged to the Surveillance and Interdiction of Global Incursion Landing, also known as SIGIL. Ever heard of it?" Damien introduced himself to the little girl.
The tiny wolf girl glanced at the young man's sable-tinted gaze and replied while lowering her head. "I heard about it. But it wasn't exactly about SIGIL. I remembered my father talking about someone who's called the White Devil who visited the north long ago."
"I am Alice, by the way. Can you let me go now? I don't want my father finding out I left our village." Alice's tail slightly wagged, waiting for their answers. She needed to return to the Howling Village before anyone else noticed her brief trip.
"The White Devil, huh? The only one with that kind of title is..." Damien glanced at Hecate, who promptly nodded in understanding. "I remembered a few people talking about the White Devil. From their words, the one with such a name is the seventh Paragon of Block 7."
"My Master, Alastair Glass."
"So, Miss Alastair already visited this place a few years ago, hm?" The young man nodded to himself before smiling at the little girl. Alice flinched upon seeing his lips curving, barely stopping herself from running away in fear. "W-What are you planning to do?"
"I don't have much meat or blood. Even if you wanted to eat me, you wouldn't taste much of it." She took a step back, daintily growling at the two Jaegers in front of her. "But don't think I won't fight back."
"I will bite you if you touch me."
Hecate chuckled at the sight, advancing forward with her velvet-irises gleaming in a crimson hue. "I am a bloodsucker, right? Beggars can't be choosers. In the middle of nowhere, I have to get as much heat as possible."
Alice further withdrew, her body quivering as she tried revealing her canines at them to force them to back off. Damien shook his head and grasped the shoulders of his partner. "Don't tease the kid, Hecate."
"Hey, Alice... We are the subordinates of the White Devil, part of the SIGIL Block 7. How about you bring the two of us to your village? We are currently investigating the disappearances of people from several villages." He explained while patting her head.
"Outsiders aren't supposed to find our village, so I won't." Alice shook her head, her resolve hardening. The Howling Village of the Lycanthropes had been hidden from the outside world for several years.
It wouldn't be broken by her.
She wasn't as naive as one would believe.
The little Lycan understood the dangers of unveiling her home to strangers she barely knew. It didn't matter whether they belonged to the organization that assisted them in finding where to settle or were the subordinates of someone they respected.
No matter what, she wouldn't utter a single word. And the two Jaegers in front of her saw the determination that steeled the young one's face.
Damien sighed to himself while Hecate shook her head in disappointment. Before they could speak further, someone interrupted them. It didn't come from either of the three people.
"Alice, what are you doing over there, talking with strangers?" It came from a middle-aged Lycanthrope, wearing thick robes that covered his skin. It was none other than Alice's brother, the heir of the Howling Village Chieftain. His name was Boris, the leader of the Nightfangs.
"Brother Boris." Alice's eyes widened, excitement bubbling from her body as she immediately bolted towards the middle-aged man and hugged him tightly. Damien and Hecate turned their head towards the newest interloper during their investigation of the missing villages.
Boris glanced at the two Jaegers and nodded to himself before lightly bowing. "You must be Damien and Hecate of SIGIL Block 7. I am honored to meet the first generation of the seventh Division."
"You can call me Boris. The Nightfang Leader of the Howling Village. I apologize if my little sister, Alice, has bothered the two of you during an important investigation." He expressed his regret as he didn't want relations with the SIGIL Block 7 to fall apart.
Hearing his words, Damien raised his eyebrows while Hecate furrowed her velvet eyes. Usually, someone recognizing them wouldn't bother the two. But the middle-aged Lycanthrope in front of them knew a bit too much.
"You know us, Boris?" The young man tilted his head and questioned, while Hecate also narrowed her gaze. Boris smiled at the two and responded. "The Howling Village has Howlers throughout the northern fringes of the New World. Intelligence operatives, for short."
"Being ignorant doesn't bode well during these changing times, so we had to improvise and receive information in some way, especially regarding our surroundings." The middle-aged man expounded with poise, earning the reluctant nod of the two Jaegers.
"I believe you already heard about our proposal with little Alice over here. What do you think about it, Boris? Can we strangers visit this Howling Village of yours?" Damien inquired, staring at the Lycan with his obsidian-like eyes. Hecate also scrutinized the middle-aged man.
"I don't really mind. I think that the Chieftain would appreciate the subordinates of the White Devil visiting our village once again." Boris maintained his smile like an experienced politician.
Damien and Hecate glanced at one another before nodding in agreement. "I hope that the Howling Village will be able to assist us in the investigation of the missing villages within the northern fringes of the New World. Are you familiar with the Abominable Cult?"
When Boris heard of the Abominable Cult, he felt nothing but anger as he barely held his fangs from growling in instinct. He took a deep breath and replied to the young man. "The Abominable Cult has been a troublesome adversary for our village."
"It seems that we have the same enemies. How about we consider ourselves as allies while handling the cult?" Boris calmly proposed. After all, becoming allies with the White Devil wasn't a bad move in terms of short-term or long-term futures.
"That we agree." Damien and Boris shook hands, smiling at one another like goddamn politicians who managed to pocket taxpayer money during a government project. Hecate and Alice looked at the two of them, feeling somewhat exasperated.
The crimson-haired vampire couldn't help but voice out. "Are you sure about inviting a vampire to your village?" It was a simple question, but heavy implications were scattered throughout her words.
Boris narrowed his eyes and shook his head. "Vampires are distrusted in the village, but since you are a subordinate of the White Devil. You must be different from the usual vampires. Besides, we already invited an Aberrant, so a vampire wouldn't be problematic as well."
Hecate nodded and gripped Damien's black suit, embracing her warmly. Damien looked at Wyvern in the distance and asked the middle-aged Lycan. "Is your village far?"
Boris nodded and answered. "It should take some time to reach our natural forms. Can the two of you keep up with wolves? Should we head there with our humanoid forms?"
"No need... We'll follow you both through the skies."
