Monster Gacha System: Becoming The Final Boss

Chapter 044 | The Calm before Block 7

Stepping out of the Dobermann's court, Echidna tightened her jacket while a group of masked individuals greeted her with admiration and respect. A cold glint escaped the abyssal depths of her pitch-black irises, recalling the resistance of the officers and the so-called heir.

A fox-masked man advanced forward and bowed to her before inquiring about the results of the meeting. "Mistress Echidna, has the Dobermann decided on what they planned to do with the outsiders in the central district?"

The beautiful and aloof lady glanced at him, her sable-tinted gaze sharp and piercing. His neck drooped for a moment, noticing the displeased manner of their leader. Her supple lips then opened. "Ignorant."

"Are you like those officers, Fox?" The words of Echidna echoed through the walls of ivory that stretched through the hallway of the exquisite manor. It was a simple question, but a sense of oppression permeated from it.

"You seemed drunk on our authority and power. It appears you have forgotten how it felt to be trampled by the strong. Would you like me to remind you?" Her pitch-black eyes fixated on the subordinate who had broken her silence.

"No, no... I don't dare, Mistress Echidna." The fox-masked man backed away, shaking his head while cold sweat dripped behind his facial cover. There was no doubt he had stepped on the tail of their leader.

"I created this group to be the elites of the elites. Better to be silent than show your foolishness." Echidna passed through the masked group, shortly glaring at them before directing her attention forward. "Return to our base. All of you will hear from me later."

Without hesitation or delay, the masked individuals nodded and bowed at her before leaving their positions. However, amongst them, one was left behind. It was the youngest of her group, their newest member, Hawk.

Hawk was a little girl whose mask resembled a red-tailed hawk. She was a homeless orphan who was wanted as a criminal for murdering her mother. A peculiar dhampir with an identity as a metahuman. After all, within her was a Brand, the weapon of humanity.

"Are they truly that powerful, Mistress?" The little girl questioned, curious about the outsiders who had brought such oppression to her owner. Echidna glanced at the little one, and her heart calmed down.

"Powerhouses aren't meant to be underestimated, Hawk." She patted the little girl's head and continued. "The New Janus is merely a small pond amidst a vast ocean brimming with monsters. We might be strong here, but to the outside world..."

"We are nothing more than children playing house."

Echidna's words echoed through the heart and mind of Hawk. Although she had matured after what she had experienced. In the end, she was ignorant of the New World since she was exceptionally young. It wasn't her fault, but the mistress considered it her duty to teach the little one.

"I want you to heed my words, Hawk. Don't make enemies of powerhouses because of some foolish things, such as pride and honor. The dead don't speak of that folly." She warned the little girl before continuing on her way.

Hawk silently stared at her mistress, who disappeared at the end of the corridor. She touched her hair and muttered to herself. "The dead do not speak of pride and honor."

Against the powerhouses of the New World, there wasn't much anyone could do. Reality wasn't as simple as fiction, which required being sensible for those entertained by it. Some things simply didn't make sense. The Progenitors, the Paragons, or the Aberrants.

Those below these three couldn't speak of such things.

Meanwhile...

In the entrance of the looming tower situated in the middle of the central district, Damien and Hecate were busy mopping the bloodied floor of the entryway. After the annihilation of the three gangs, they were allowed to clean up their messes.

Naturally, they didn't do so with the best of hearts. The two could only grumble in silence while Alastair gave them a gentle smile. No one dared to find trouble with their boss, especially someone as eccentric as the seventh Paragon.

'But it's not all bad news for me.' Damien thought to himself while cleaning the puddle of blood scattered throughout the ground floor. Beside him were two jet-black hands belonging to Eclipse; she was also assisting him in this fruitless endeavour.

It was peculiar to see bodyless arms mopping the bloodied floor, but it was better than nothing. The black-suited young man appreciated the help. No matter how strange it may be.

At any rate, the good news was that only he and Hecate eliminated the three gangs that occupied the abandoned branch building of SIGIL. With hundreds of mobsters as their adversaries, he was able to acquire a substantial amount of Terror Points through Hound and Fafnir.

Dealing with the mobsters of the three gangs didn't even cost him the utilization of personal skills. The base power of his summoned monsters was enough to handle them with ease. But it remained a mystery whether they could handle metahumans or not.

After all, the only ones he fought were the powerhouses of humanity, from the sixth Paragon to the seventh. Even Jason, his temporary collaboration partner, didn't exert all of his power during the mission.

'Regardless, I have over a thousand Terror Points in my wallet.' The edges of his lips subtly curled up, pleased by the amount displayed by the status display. But his joy faded when he remembered that no primary mission emerged during the termination of the three gangs.

He was disappointed; nevertheless, all had come to pass. One could only hope for the following commands later to trigger a primary mission from the Monster Gacha System. Especially when he wanted to try spinning for paranormal and extraterrestrial.

'A primary mission should come. After all, the letters sent by Alastair should cause some resistance from the so-called four cardinal families.' Damien thought while mopping the floor with a tinge of excitement.

Once a cardinal family dared to oppose the seventh Paragon, a termination order would be given. He would probably have to handle the criminal syndicates. This should be enough for a primary mission. The thought alone was intriguing.

"I hope that at least one would confront us," Damien mumbled to himself, earning the attention of the nearby crimson-haired girl. She tilted her head, curious. "Hey, what are you mumbling about, Damien?"

"Nothing, I'm just thinking of the future, Hecate." He smiled at his partner, who was barely holding on to her rationality while mopping the bloodied floor. She was a vampire, and blood was an instinctual delight to them.

It was already astounding that she could last this far cleaning the mess without losing her mind. It made Damien wonder whether or not it was a test for his junior.

"I really am jealous of those two black hands, Damien. If I had those two, it would probably be much easier for me. Alas, the New World wasn't built with equality in mind." She sighed to herself, shaking her head like a senile philosopher.

As someone who fought in close quarters, there were times when she wished she could punch someone four times in an instant. Sadly, vampires were built with aesthetics in mind. Except for the ghouls, of course.

"Have you thought about your codename, Hecate?" Damien inquired, changing the subject with ease. Codenames were important for Jaegers working for SIGIL. Their personal and ordinary lives were vital as none were machines that could work without halting.

The crimson-haired girl thought about it for a moment. She never pondered her codename, as she didn't consider it a priority. But with her senior asking her about it, she wanted to answer him outright.

Taking her time thinking about a codename, Damien continued mopping the bloodied floor with Eclipse and patiently waited in the background. It didn't take long for his senior to reach a decision.

"How about Arcana? Does it sound good, Damien?" She tilted her head, curious about the opinion of her senior. The two of them had been together since her arrival in New York, and they got along very well.

It might be because of their peculiar identities as an Aberrant and a Vampire, respectively, but it was pleasant nonetheless. In any case, he smiled after hearing her codename and nodded in agreement.

"It's excellent, mine should be Oberon." Damien dropped his codename, which was no different from his current boss title. He hadn't been given a chance to use it, but perhaps later, he could finally call himself as such.

"Oberon, huh? As expected of my senior, you're good at naming yourself." Hecate chuckled to herself and continued mopping on the floor. Damien also smirked and remarked. "How about we call ourselves by the codenames once in the field?"

"I will report our decision to Francine after cleaning up the mess." He suggested, earning the nod of his junior. The crimson-haired girl rubbed the back of her head and muttered. "I'll be relying on you, Damien. Also, the spelling is A...R..C...A...N..A."

"I'm waiting for good news." She waved her hand at him and glanced at Eclipse before pouting in false annoyance.
