Chapter 84: The Unexpected Gift (84)
The school day was winding down, and a sense of anticipation hung in the air. It was Aiko's birthday, but she had kept the fact a secret from most of her classmates. She didn't want a fuss or too much attention—she preferred the quiet moments, the ones that felt meaningful.
Haruto, however, knew. He always remembered. He'd been planning something for weeks, though he hadn't let on to Aiko. Now, as the final bell rang and students began to pack up, Haruto glanced over at her. She was gathering her books, her usual soft smile in place, but he could see a hint of exhaustion in her eyes.
"Hey, Aiko," he called, slinging his bag over his shoulder. "Do you have a few minutes before heading home?"
She tilted her head, curious. "Why?"
"No reason," he said, a playful grin tugging at his lips. "Just trust me."
Aiko hesitated but nodded. "Okay."
The two of them left the classroom together, their steps falling into an easy rhythm. Haruto led her out of the school building and toward the cherry blossom grove that had been their special spot since childhood. The petals were just starting to bloom, painting the trees in soft pinks and whites.
"Haruto, what are we doing here?" Aiko asked, looking around.
"You'll see," he replied, his grin widening.
As they approached the grove, Aiko noticed something unusual. Beneath one of the largest trees was a small wooden box, painted in soft pastels and decorated with hand-drawn flowers. Aiko's name was scrawled across the top in Haruto's familiar handwriting.
"What's this?" she asked, kneeling down to inspect it.
"Open it," Haruto said, his voice tinged with excitement.
Aiko carefully lifted the lid, revealing an assortment of items inside. There were small, folded notes, each decorated with little doodles, a set of colored pencils, a sketchbook, and a tiny jar filled with origami stars.
"Haruto..." Aiko's voice was soft, her eyes wide as she took in the contents.
"I wanted to give you something special," Haruto explained, scratching the back of his head nervously. "Something that shows how much I... well, how much I appreciate you."
Aiko picked up one of the notes, unfolding it to reveal a short message: 'Happy birthday, Aiko. You're the brightest star in my sky.' Her heart fluttered as she read the words, her cheeks warming.
"Did you write all of these?" she asked, glancing at the jar of stars.
"Yeah," Haruto admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "I thought about just getting you a gift card or something, but that felt... impersonal. I wanted to give you something that meant more."
Aiko's fingers brushed over the sketchbook. The cover was hand-painted, depicting a cherry blossom tree under a bright blue sky. She could tell it had been done with care, every detail thoughtful and deliberate.
"This is amazing," she said, her voice filled with emotion.
Haruto sat down beside her, watching as she examined each item. "You've always been there for me, Aiko. Through everything. I just wanted to do something to show you how much that means to me."
Aiko turned to look at him, her eyes shimmering. "Thank you, Haruto. This... this is the best gift I've ever gotten."
They sat in silence for a moment, the gentle breeze carrying the scent of blossoms around them. Aiko reached into the jar of stars, pulling one out. She unfolded it carefully, revealing another message: 'You're irreplaceable.'
She smiled, her heart swelling with warmth. "Did you really write 100 of these?"
Haruto chuckled. "It took a while, but yeah. I wanted each one to say something that reminded me of you."
Aiko leaned against the tree, holding the jar close to her chest. "I don't know what to say. This means so much to me."
Haruto gave her a lopsided grin. "You don't have to say anything. Just... promise me you'll keep smiling like that."
She laughed softly, the sound light and genuine. "I promise."
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, Aiko and Haruto remained under the tree, talking and laughing. The box of gifts sat between them, a tangible reminder of their bond.
For Aiko, it wasn't just a birthday gift—it was a symbol of the connection they shared, one that went beyond words. And for Haruto, seeing her smile was all the reward he needed.
Under the cherry blossoms, with the soft glow of the setting sun around them, the moment felt timeless, a memory they would carry with them forever.
