Chapter 58: The Rumor (58)
The whispers began on a breezy Thursday morning, weaving through the hallways of the school like a persistent wind. Haruto noticed it first during homeroom, when a group of girls in the corner giggled while glancing at him and Aiko. He brushed it off, thinking nothing of it, but by lunchtime, the whispers had grown louder, and even Aiko seemed aware of them.
"Did you hear?" one student murmured to another. "They say Haruto and Aiko are dating!"
Haruto's ears burned as he overheard the words, and he froze mid-bite into his rice ball. Across from him, Aiko was uncharacteristically quiet, staring at her lunch tray with a furrowed brow.
"Dating?" Haruto repeated under his breath, feeling his heart race. He glanced at Aiko, unsure of what to say.
"It's just a silly rumor," Aiko said finally, her voice calm but her cheeks tinged pink. "People will move on to something else soon."
But as the day wore on, it became clear that the rumor was spreading faster than they could avoid it. Everywhere they went, students shot them knowing looks, whispered behind their hands, or teased them outright.
During gym class, Riku jogged up to Haruto with a smirk. "So, it's true, huh? You and Aiko?" he teased, nudging Haruto in the ribs.
"What? No! We're just friends!" Haruto shot back, his voice louder than he intended.
Riku laughed, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. Just asking. But, you know, you two do spend a lot of time together…"
Haruto groaned, turning away. It wasn't like he could deny that. He and Aiko had been inseparable for years, but this was the first time their closeness had been misconstrued in such a public way.
Aiko had her own share of encounters. As she walked to the art room after school, a group of girls intercepted her.
"Aiko, you and Haruto make such a cute couple!" one of them said, grinning.
Aiko's face turned crimson. "We're not a couple," she said firmly, though her voice wavered. "Haruto's my best friend, that's all."
The girls giggled. "Sure, sure. But everyone knows best friends can become more…"
Aiko didn't respond, pushing past them and retreating to the art room. Once there, she sat at her desk, her sketchbook open but untouched. The teasing wasn't what bothered her—it was the uncertainty it had planted in her heart. Did she and Haruto seem like a couple? And why did the idea make her feel so… conflicted?
That evening, Haruto and Aiko walked home together, the weight of the day pressing heavily between them. Usually, their conversations were filled with jokes and stories, but tonight, the silence was almost unbearable.
Finally, Haruto broke it. "Aiko, about the rumor…"
She glanced at him, her expression unreadable. "What about it?"
"Well, it's just… why does everyone think we're dating? We're just friends, right?" His words came out rushed, as if saying them quickly would make them easier to believe.
Aiko hesitated before answering. "Right," she said softly, though her tone lacked conviction.
Haruto noticed her hesitation but didn't press her. Instead, they walked the rest of the way in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.
The next day, Aiko decided to confront the situation head-on. During lunch, she stood up in front of their classmates, her voice steady despite her racing heart.
"Everyone, can you stop with the rumors? Haruto and I are not dating," she announced, her gaze sweeping across the room. "We're just friends, and that's all there is to it."
The room fell silent for a moment before the murmurs began again, quieter this time. Aiko sat back down, her cheeks burning, but a small smile played on her lips when Haruto gave her a thumbs-up.
"Thanks for saying that," he whispered.
"Of course," she replied. "I wasn't going to let them make things awkward for us."
Though the rumors didn't disappear entirely, they lost their momentum over the next few days. Haruto and Aiko continued their usual routines, determined not to let the gossip affect their friendship.
But deep down, both of them knew that the rumors had unearthed questions they weren't ready to answer—questions about their bond, their feelings, and what the future might hold for them. For now, though, they were content to let things stay as they were: two best friends navigating the ups and downs of life, together.
