Chapter 55: Blushing Faces (55)
The sun was high in the sky, casting its warm glow over the schoolyard as lunchtime rolled around. The air buzzed with energy as students spilled out of the classrooms, eager for a break. Haruto and Aiko found their usual spot under the cherry blossom tree, their favorite sanctuary away from the noisy crowd.
Today, however, there was an unusual tension in the air. Aiko seemed quieter than usual, her cheeks tinted a faint pink as she avoided Haruto's gaze. Haruto noticed but chose not to comment, unsure of what was causing her uncharacteristic shyness.
"Hey, Haruto," Aiko said suddenly, breaking the silence. She fidgeted with the edge of her lunchbox, her voice softer than usual. "Do you ever think about... you know, what people say about us?"
Haruto blinked, caught off guard by the question. "What do you mean?"
"You know," she mumbled, her cheeks flushing deeper, "how some people call us... a couple."
The words hung in the air, making Haruto's heart skip a beat. He felt a warmth creeping up his neck as he struggled to find the right response.
"I mean... people say a lot of things," he said, trying to sound nonchalant. "Does it bother you?"
Aiko shook her head quickly, her face turning even redder. "No! It's just... I was curious what you thought."
Haruto scratched the back of his head, feeling a strange mix of embarrassment and something else he couldn't quite name. "Well, I guess it doesn't really matter what they say, right? We know what we are."
Aiko looked at him, her expression unreadable. "And what are we?" she asked softly.
Haruto froze, realizing the weight of her question. His mind raced as he tried to piece together an answer. They were friends, of course, but somehow that word felt too small, too simple to describe what they had.
"I guess... we're us," he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. "You and me. Haruto and Aiko."
Aiko's lips curved into a small smile, though her cheeks remained rosy. "Yeah. I like that."
For a moment, they sat in silence, the sound of the breeze rustling the cherry blossoms filling the space between them. Haruto couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted, though he wasn't entirely sure what it meant.
As the afternoon went on, the blushing faces became a topic of amusement among their classmates. During gym class, Haruto caught a few knowing glances from his friends, accompanied by teasing grins.
"Haruto!" one of them called out, nudging him playfully. "You and Aiko looked pretty cozy under that tree earlier."
Haruto rolled his eyes, though his flushed face betrayed his attempt at indifference. "We were just eating lunch," he muttered, but the smirks around him said no one believed him.
On the other side of the field, Aiko faced similar teasing from her friends.
"So," one of them said, leaning in with a sly grin, "what's going on between you and Haruto? Don't think we didn't notice that little moment during lunch."
Aiko's face turned bright red as she waved her hands frantically. "It's nothing like that! We're just friends!"
"Friends who blush every time they talk to each other?" another friend teased, causing Aiko to bury her face in her hands.
By the end of the day, both Haruto and Aiko were thoroughly flustered, though neither could deny the tiny spark of warmth that the teasing had ignited. As they walked home together, the usual ease of their conversations was replaced by an awkward silence.
"Do you think they'll ever stop teasing us?" Aiko asked, breaking the quiet.
Haruto chuckled, though his laugh sounded more nervous than amused. "Probably not. But, hey, it's not so bad, right? As long as we know the truth."
Aiko glanced at him, her expression softening. "Yeah. You're right."
They reached the fork in the road where their paths diverged, and Aiko hesitated before turning to leave. "Haruto?"
"Yeah?"
She hesitated, her face turning pink again. "Thanks... for always being you."
Haruto blinked, surprised by her words, but before he could respond, she had already started walking away, her steps light and quick.
As he watched her go, Haruto felt his own cheeks heat up again. He scratched the back of his head, wondering why such a simple comment had made his heart race.
For the rest of the evening, the memory of Aiko's blushing face lingered in his mind, accompanied by the faintest hint of a smile on his lips.
