Chapter 572: Returning to The Facility
After hearing about the situation from Alice, Alex had a huge urge to go to the moon. Many people he knew were living there now.
As awakeners had long lifespans, most of them were still alive. He then raised his eyebrow, "Wait, where's William? You haven't told me about him."
Alice's gaze turned complicated. She had tried to look for him all this time, but she hadn't found a single clue. It was like he just disappeared without any trace.
But before she could answer, Alex's gaze sharpened. Tons of new information flowed into his mind, as the soul he separated came out from the virtual game. His gaze hardened, "We need to go now."
"Where? What happened?" Ming Yue asked, concern in her tone.
She had known Alex for a long time now, if he said something like this, that meant it was something important.
"I'll explain while we move. Alice, could you guide us back to that city?"
"What!? We just escaped from that spot and you want us to return again?"
"Well, have you heard this saying? Sometimes the most dangerous place is the safest one. Anyway, when we escaped, I left part of my soul to infiltrate the facility."
Alex then started explaining the gist of what happened. He then explained his plan to use that place as their main base to start attacking other cities.
As for the defensive mechanisms that came from the Mechalyte, Alex wasn't worried. He was confident that as long as he had full access, he could clean up any potential danger.
After all, his ability had been upgraded, and he was far stronger than before. But Alice was not convinced.
Different from Alex and Ming Yue, who despite facing their own perils, succeeded in overcoming them and becoming stronger.
"No… you're underestimating them too much, Alex. Do you know how many times we've lost fighting against the Mechalyte? I don't even see a single chance we can win against them."
Alex's lips curled into a smirk, brimming with confidence. "That's because you don't have me. Do you forget what happened in your homeland?
If I weren't there, what do you think would've happened? Don't underestimate a progenitor successor."
Seeing Alice still hesitant, Alex started walking, leaving the hideout. "Well, I'm going with or without you. We can't waste this opportunity.
As I said before, this is time-sensitive. If the city-state fails to fill their quota, it will trigger more attention."
It was something Alex didn't want to happen now, as he wanted to use it as a bastion to start resurrecting humanity. As for the humans inside the facility, he already had a plan in mind. It was similar to the one his clone had thought of.
Slowly pull them out from the world, just like a certain movie he had watched before. The trio moved quickly, and since they were no longer hunted, it didn't take long until they reached the border of the city.
The familiar view appeared once more. Alice stood hesitantly, still not sure whether she should follow Alex into the city.
But Alex didn't even glance back. With confidence, he walked inside directly toward his clone.
Meanwhile, a few moments ago inside the facility, Aira's face was beaming, her gaze filled with hope. "You're not lying to me? My mother is really alive?"
"Yes. Now that I'm connected with my main body, I can feel the contract we made is still there," Alex's clone replied with a smile. But deep down inside, he ruminated, maybe it would've been better for her to die.
Based on all the clues he had gathered so far, there was a high possibility her mother had been captured and was now enduring countless tortures as they tried to extract information. With how much time had passed, now the question was, was Aira's father an ally or not?
He then raised his eyebrow. "My original body is close. Could you shut down the security system?"
"Al-alright…" Aira replied. Despite all the risks, now that she had some hope that her mother was still alive somewhere out there, she didn't care anymore.
As long as she could save her, whatever the risk, she would do it. Not long after, three people appeared in front of Aira.
Aira was silent, looking at them while comparing their appearances, as she wondered which one was Alex. After all, the one she had talked to was nothing more than a soul possessing a human body.
Alex's gaze turned complicated, seeing his own soul inside Jack's body. "If only we could do something…" Alex's clone said.
The real Alex shook his head. "If only we could resurrect someone who already died… Unfortunately, his soul is no longer here…"
Alex's clone sighed. He raised his hand. "Then let's take care of his mother at least."
"Of course," the original Alex replied as he shook hands. At that moment, Alex's soul returned. Jack's body turned lifeless, then fell with a thud.
Alex's gaze turned complicated. He loved his mother. He couldn't imagine how she would feel if he died first. And now… he must bring the news of Jack's death to her.
Ming Yue, feeling Alex's melancholy, put her hand on his shoulder. "You alright?"
"Yes, I'm fine. We have more things to do now…." Alex took a deep breath, steadying his emotions. He couldn't afford to dwell on.
Every second counted. His eyes locked onto the girl standing before him, her expression still nervous and uncertain.
"You're Aira, right? Faerith's daughter," he continued. "Can you explain to me the system in this place? How it works, who controls it, what failsafes it has, everything. Even the smallest detail might be important."
Aira nodded quickly, startled but determined. "Y-yes! I've been inside the control room before. I know where the main server core is, and I've accessed the internal schematics.
The security system is split into multiple tiers, some are controlled by AI protocols, but others are linked to the mechalyte itself."
Alex's expression sharpened. "So the mechalyte has partial authority here too?"
Meanwhile, Alice stood still, her gaze looking around the building, feeling complicated. She had spent so many years, but to reach this far into the facility, it was the first time for her.
As for the many tubes filled with humans, Alice didn't feel much. In the end, she was no human.
