Chapter 108: Rag Doll
"But—"
"Go, I'll hold them off for you!"
Adam shoved her backward with enough force to send her stumbling several feet through the sand. Those who survived the lightning attack and saw Adam pushing Hannah away finally woke up from their shock.
The smell of charred flesh still hung in the air from the lightning strike, and the sight of two Heroes approaching broke whatever resolve they had left in destroying the enemy crystal.
"W-wait! Retreat! Go… go to the other lanes! Go!"
They scattered like startled birds, some helping wounded comrades, others abandoning everything to run faster.
"Adam?!"
"Go!"
Hannah looked back once, before forcing herself to follow the others toward who had already started running for the other lanes. The way the Domes and the battlefields are set up, the closer the Defensive Crystals were to the Spawn Crystal, the closer the Defensive Crystals were to each other.
In a way, this was also the best time to scatter in hopes of surprising the other lanes—but of course, they weren't actually running there to serve as reinforcement.
One of the Heroes moved to pursue the fleeing creeps, but Adam planted his feet and swung the Shion with everything he had. The massive blade carved through the sand, sending up a wall of sand that rose maybe twenty feet into the air.
"Hm?!" The pursuing Hero stopped in her tracks, crimson wings flickering into existence on her back before retracting as she leaped backward to rejoin her companion.
[Carmen, the Berserk Fairy.]
[Quaneesha, the Lightning Dancer.]
The two Heroes glanced at each other. Carmen was even shorter than Adam—perhaps only reaching his shoulders. But to match her small stature, she looked so delicate that one might mistake her for a porcelain doll. Her dark hair didn't help
"What the fuck was that, guey?!" Despite her doll-like appearance, however, her mouth was… colorful. "Eh? Did you see who did that, you vieja negra?!"
"Language, young blood."
The second Hero was her complete opposite—an older woman with a massive afro of graying hair that seemed to crackle with electricity. Lightning danced between the strands as if they were alive, contrasting her weathered face.
"Eh, fuck that." Carmen's upper lip pursed on one side, scoffing as she studied the wall of sand with curious eyes. "I didn't see no hero. You see someone?"
"It—Hm?!"
Before Quaneesha could answer, the sound of their Middle Crystal being hit whispered into their ears. They looked, only for the two of them to see its light rippling like water. They didn't have to wonder what caused that, however, as they saw a black sheath dropping right beneath the floating crystal.
"Fucking fuck! What the fuck is—" This time, it was Carmen who was interrupted as she caught a glimpse of a shadow in her peripheral.
It was Adam, who burst through the sand wall while the two were distracted. The shion, already aimed directly at Carmen's neck. The fairy-like Hero was still able to react to this, her small hands catching the massive blade and deflecting it upward.
Due to this sudden maneuver, however, the blade increased momentum… straight toward Quaneesha's throat.
The Lightning Dancer was ready to dodge or block Adam's attack, but the sudden change in angle caused her to widen her eyes, since she was still a little shocked with what was happening. Her body moved on its own, electricity sparking wildly around her as she tried to dodge.
Still, the Shion's edge caught her cheek, carving through flesh until it met her skull. Blood sprayed across the sand as the blade lodged itself in bone, stopping just short of her brain. Quaneesha stared down at Adam, her face still obviously confused… but slowly turning into disbelief.
"Boy, who even is you?" she snarled, electricity beginning to build around her afro like a storm cloud.
Carmen was the same. But she started to move despite her shock. But before she could even move a finger, Adam spat a mouthful of sand directly into her eyes.
"Ah! Maldito cabron! Puto!" Carmen cursed, her hands flying to her face as the rough sand scraped against her corneas. "Fuck! What the fuck!"
While Carmen clawed at her eyes, Quaneesha grabbed the back of the Shion. Adam pulled with everything he had, his enhanced strength straining against her grip, but the blade only budged a few inches.
And with him unable to move, Quaneesha's fingers wrapped around his face.
Quaneesha didn't say anything, only sighing as lightning erupted from her palm, coursing through Adam's skull with enough voltage that it looked like his skin became translucent. His hair began to smoke as electricity danced across his skin. His muscles seized, body convulsing as the current overrode his nervous system.
But Adam had endured worse. Much worse. This was the Hospital's favorite thing to do to him—shock him with enough power, it melted him from the inside out. And unfortunately for Quaneesha, years of this had made Adam build a sort of resistance to it.
His muscles still spasmed involuntarily, but his mind remained clear, focused… he could control his body despite it becoming wild on him.
At the same time, Carmen finally stopped rubbing her eyes, blinking away tears and sand particles. But, unfortunately, even more for her, the moment her vision cleared, Adam grabbed the knife he got earlier and buried it right through the hilt into her left eye.
"Fuck!" She screamed, stumbling backward as blood poured down her cheek as soon as she pulled it out. She didn't die, however.
"My eye!" she shrieked, one hand pressed against the wound while the other swung wildly at Adam. "You took my fucking eye! You little bitch motherfucker midget!"
"Don't!" Quaneesha's eyes widened as Carmen lunged at Adam with the fury of a wounded animal. The old woman gritted her teeth, immediately canceling her abilities so Carmen wouldn't be caught on it.
Adam felt himself free to move again, but it didn't matter at all—Carmen had already tackled him… and this tackle felt like the time he was smashed by a car back in the last Game. His ribs snapped in multiple pieces.
He was sure he lost consciousness for a moment there, too… because he found himself already far from the Crystal. Carmen was screaming at him, and he could feel the back of his head almost burning.
"Huh…" Quaneesha watched the two figures disappear into the distance, rolling her eyes at Carmen's lack of restraint. "Now… what?"
She glanced toward where the fleeing creeps had scattered, then back at her team's Middle Middle Crystal. Although it had cracks on it, it was still far from shattering into pieces.
Quaneesha then rubbed the blood on her cheek, feeling the deep gash Adam had carved into her face.
"What… even was that white boy?"
***
"You stabbed me in the eye?!" Carmen screamed, her fist connecting endlessly on Adam's face. Blood sprayed from his nose, his lips, painting the Berserk Fairy's face with it.
She didn't care, however, she dragged him by his neck, her crimson wings growing larger with each passing second, expanding from delicate fairy into something more monstrous.
"You think you can just fucking stab me and walk away, you piece of shit?!" Another punch shattered his cheekbone. Another split his eyebrow open. His face became a mangled mess of torn flesh and exposed bone, but still he breathed.
"You think you're something because you caught me off guard, you fuck?!" Carmen grabbed Adam's face with both hands, her thumb finding his eyes.
"How do you like this, you puto?!" And then, she drove her thumbs deep into his skull.
She released his head… and then grabbed both his ankles, her wings beating furiously as she lifted off the ground. Carmen spun, and Adam's body whipped through the air like a rag doll before she released him skyward. As he reached the peak of his ascent, she shot upward, her knee connecting with his spine with enough force to send him even higher into the desert sky.
"Fuck you!"
Adam tumbled through the air, his recovering eyes taking in the vast battlefield spread below. The middle crystal seemed impossibly far now, a tiny speck of light in the endless sea of sand. And this entire time, he didn't let go of the shion at all.
"Oh…" He could also see the other crystals scattered across the dome—all the enemy's outer crystals were destroyed, their left middle lane crystal gone as well.
His team had lost two outer crystals. They were… winning.
Before Adam could take in the view of the desert more, Carmen suddenly appeared beside him, spinning like a boomerang, sand and debris flying off her wings.
"Midget!" And then, she released a kick right in his face, sending him plummeting toward the earth like a missile.
Adam's body hit the sand with tremendous force, creating a crater that sent up a massive cloud of sand.
"You think we're done?!" Carmen followed him down, her wings spread wide, exploding with her anger. "We're done when I say we're done! I am going to tear you into pieces and then let you eat your own balls, motherfucker!"
But then, when she was only a few feet away from completely blowing Adam into pieces, she stopped, hovering just above his body.
As for Adam, he lay at the bottom, the shion aimed directly at Carmen—no. Its tip already had blood on it. Just a little more, and her foot would have been impaled through.
"Heh…" She landed softly beside Adam instead, her wings folding into her back as she stared down at him. A smirk spread across her blood-stained face.
"You're one cheeky little midget bastard, aren't you?"
