Chapter 42: Helping Hand

Jaden took a deep breath as healed another person that was confined to medbay. He had started doing this as soon as he'd left the admirals quarters, he didn't want to wait any longer as the more he did the harder it would get until he couldn't do it anymore. He'd already had that rude awakening happen back in Choal and he would make sure to never be in that position again. What he'd discovered is while he could heal old wounds there was a limit, he couldn't regrow an organ or an arm after a week or so, but he could heal minor injuries, or at least those that would heal on their own.

When he'd healed some of the Jabiimi he found he could easily heal old scars despite them happening a long time ago. Though if he was honest he felt uncomfortable healing the Jabiimi, he didn't like the way they looked at him. As if he was some saviour, because he wasn't, he had failed so many of them, and even if he'd stopped their planet from imploding there were still billions trapped there under separatist rule.

He felt like they'd look to him for a solution, but in truth he had none. If he was found innocent at his trial he would leave, he didn't want to be involved in this war anymore, he didn't have it in him to keep fighting. "There you should be fine now," Jaden said with a smile as he looked down at a young girl. She blushed at him before running off embarrassed to her mother who thanked him profusely. Thankfully one of the medical officers escorted her out.

Jaden sat down on a bench inside the infirmary breathing out a sigh wondering what to do now. He could go and check on the girls, but they were likely busy. 'I'll need to talk to Satele,' he thought to himself. She'd want to know what happened, plus it would give him a chance to keep training, doing so always cleared his mind. Heading out of the medbay he made his way to his quarters, it wasn't hard to find as Novak had told him it was the same one he had when he first boarded this ship.

When he slipped inside his quarters he took a second to look around, it felt strange being here now. This was essentially the start of his journey; a small smile crossed his face as he remembered how much he wanted to leave. He'd probably give his past self a heart attack if he told him what would be happening a few months from now. 'On the same ship back to Coruscant to be tried for murder,' Jaden thought with a slight chuckle.

He walked over to the desk he'd sat at numerous times before, brushing his fingers against it he felt a slight flash of memories. Him bashing his head against the table as he tried to figure out a way off the ship. Taking out his Holocron he activated it and the holographic form of Satele appeared in the room. Needless to say she looked quite surprised when she found herself in the same room where she'd trained Jaden just months before. "I take it things went well?" She asked as a smile grew on her face.

Jaden returned her smile. "As well as they could I suppose," he said, after he began to regale her with the tale of how they arrived here. From the separatist super weapon that destabilised the planet to the duel with the Sith, and then how he and Aubrie stayed behind to try to save the planet.

"Now I am back on the Defender heading into Republic custody," he said as he sat down on his bed with Satele standing in front of him with her arms crossed.

"You are truly extraordinary Jaden," she said with a soft smile. "Never have I met someone with such a good heart."

"You wouldn't have said that if you knew me a few months ago," Jaden said with a chuckle.

"On the contrary, no man can change overnight Jaden, who you were a few months ago and who you are now have revealed that this was who you are all along," Satele said.

Jaden wished that were true, but despite the kind words he didn't much believe them. "So tell me what you want me to do with your holocron," he said changing the subject.

Sateles eyebrows creased. "What do you mean? Do you plan on finding another master?" She asked crossing her arms again.

Jaden chuckled. "Never, but I'll be handed into custody soon and they'll take my belongings, soon your holocron will be sent to the Jedi temple," he explained.

She shook her head. "You won't be found guilty, leave the holocron with someone you trust, they'll return it to you in due time," she replied.

Jaden raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean I won't be found guilty?" He asked.

Satele walked forward and knelt before him. "Jaden the force brought you to Jabiim, don't you find it strange you could never leave despite how hard you tried, how the one transport you got on just so happened to take you to the Defender in the first place?" She asked.

"The force guided you to Jabiim, I refuse to believe it all leads to your death or imprisonment, especially after what you did on Jabiim."

"If the Mass Shadow Generator had been used it could've caused a wound in the force with all that death, you and your apprentice prevented that, don't lose hope keep on trusting in the force," she said softly.

Jaden sighed but nodded. "I'll give you to Aubrie, she won't ask many questions and would keep your identity a secret if asked."

Satele smiled before standing up. "So since you summoned me I imagine you'll want to continue your training," she said.

"And since we are not in a battlefield we can go back to the foundation level and reinforce your basic skills," she added her smile gong from ear to ear.

Jaden sighed. "Alright let's go."

After nearly two hours later of constant mediation while holding things around him Jaden felt like he was about to collapse. The concentration needed to move multiple objects in different directions in three dimensions was immense and the stamina needed to maintain it for that long was just as great. He had taken off his shirt as he sat cross legged in the middle of the floor. Sweat poured down his body, he had to stop himself from panting as he'd lose control of his meditative state.

The idea of this exercise was to not only train control but to train his sense and alter. He was essentially training all three applications of the force that the Jedi used. He used sense to expand his awareness using the force, using this he would then use alter to lift various objects around the room and swirl them around himself. He trained his control as he would be focusing deeply on the force and would gain greater awareness of it. From the way Satele had explained it this was an exercise that even masters could perform, as there was always a way to expand your senses and therefore the subsequent abilities. Though she said at certain points it becomes too difficult for them to improve and most give up.

"Okay that's enough," Satele said as she stood in front watching him.

Jaden panted as the objects all fell to the ground simultaneously. His head hurt and even his body was aching from all the tensing his muscles had done. "We are not done yet," Satele said, dashing Jadens hopes of a break.

"This exercise is an advanced one even for Jedi Knights, but back when I was Grandmaster we would start our Padawans on this exercise as it would help them grow early on," she explained.

She then told Jaden to gather up the objects he'd been flying around himself. Most of it was useless junk such as a pad, a cup, a remote control and other odds and ends. "Close your eyes and envision something, it can be anything, an object, a person, as long as it's real and not metaphysical," she instructed.

Jaden did as he was asked and closed his eyes. His thoughts were blank for a moment before he then started to think about something he hadn't expected. Satele saw him raise his eyebrows as a surprised expression made its way onto his face. "Now I want you to use the items in front of you to make an image of what you see," Satele said.

Jaden opened his eyes with a confused look on his face. "How am I supposed to do that with this junk?" He asked.

Satele shrugged. "That's for you to figure out Young Padawan," she said a grin tugging at her lips.

Jaden huffed as he looked at the junk before him and started moving it with the force trying to use it to recreate the image he had still fresh in his mind. He struggled however, the items in front of him were different sizes and they couldn't fit together, no matter how he tried it didn't work. "Stop trying to use the force Jaden, let the force flow through you," Satele said from the side.

Though her advice was accurate it was easier said than done, letting the force flow through him was what he thought he was doing in the first place. And so for the next three hours he set there trying to create an object by forcing together a remote and a cup. His frustration was growing but he didn't let it show, he calmed himself and kept on trying. Satele offered no advice just repeating to let the force flow through him. Jaden sighed, though on the fourth hour he thought that perhaps the problem was he was thinking too much. He had the image he wanted to create in his mind so he would just close his eyes and hope the force flowed correctly. He sunk deeper into a meditative trance while envisioning what he wanted.

Satele who was still watching him found her eyes widening as he closed his eyes and then watched as the objects started to crack and break down until they were like shattered glass. They then started to come together forming a statue in front of Jaden. Satele walked around to see what it was he had built and was surprised to see that it was a girl. While the statue had a mesh of different colours the detail was there. It was most certainly a girl, the only girl Satele had heard him talk about was his accidental apprentice. A smirk made its way onto her face. "Well well, I didn't know my apprentice was so popular," she said aloud which had the effect of stirring Jaden from his trance.

He opened his eyes and looked at the statue, he felt a little embarrassed but he ignored Sateles comment. "She was the first thing that popped into mind," he said offhandedly.

"I wonder why that is," Satele commented.

Jaden rolled his eyes. "She's a Jedi, they cannot have romantic relationships," he said as he stood up.

"Can they not?" Satele asked with slight confusion. "During my time it was frowned upon, but it wasn't outright banned... how egregious," she commented.

Jaden shrugged. "Attachments and love can lead to the dark side, or so I've been told," he replied.

"Love can also lead to acts of strength, it can turn people away from the darkness, to disregard it in such a black and white way is foolish," Satele said her voice rising slightly.

"It's not me you have to convince," Jaden said. Honestly he couldn't care less about what rules and codes the Jedi had, he wanted nothing to do with them.

However before Satele could continue on her tirade, Jaden noticed Aubrie on the edge of his senses and she was getting closer fast. "Aubrie is here, I'll speak to you later," Jaden said cutting her off before deactivating the Holocron. A few moments later she burst through the doors. "Master!" She said before she ran over jumping into his arms as she hugged him tightly.

Jaden grunted as she slammed into him. "I'm okay Aubrie, it's not even been a day since we saw each other," he said as he rubbed her back.

"I know but I was worried Admiral Novak would share the republics opinion of you," she said as she pushed her face into his neck.

"Novak is a good man, the republic could use a lot more men like him," Jaden replied.

"So where have you been for so long, Admiral Novak told me he'd let you go hours ago," she said as she pulled her head back and stared at him. Jaden felt a little uncomfortable under her gaze especially since she was pressed so tightly against him.

"It's been a long few days so I decided to do a little training and meditation," he replied, leaving out the part where he needed to talk to his holographic master.

"May I join you," she asked.

Jaden scratched his head. "Sure but I was actually going to rest soon, I think it may be best for you to rest as well, we can't exist on the force indefinitely," he said.

"Of course," she said as she climbed off him. She then moved backward and nearly tripped as she came into contact with the statue that Jaden had built. She easily regained her balance and turned. "What is this Master?" She asked as she knelt down.

"It's nothing! Just a training exercise, I'll get rid of it," Jaden said hastily as he stood up, but he was too late. Aubrie was already knelt down and looking at the statue. Jaden felt his embarrassment from before return tenfold.

He wasn't sure what Aubries reaction would be, but he didn't expect it to be a good one, even he could see how creepy this was. After nearly a minute of kneeling down and looking at the statue she spoke. "Did you make this master?" She asked.

Jaden couldn't much deny it so with a sigh he nodded. "I did," he spoke in a low tone.

Aubrie again didn't react at all, eventually she lifted the statue up. "If you don't mind I would like to keep it," she said as a small smile bloomed onto her face, her cheeks also looked slightly warm and her eyes sparked green.

Jaden slightly speechless just nodded.

"Then I shall return tomorrow for our training," she said as she quickly left Jadens quarters.

Jaden stood there speechless not quite sure what had just happened.

...

As Aubrie left Jadens quarters her composure broke and she started breathing heavily. She quickly started making her way to her own quarters, she didn't understand what was wrong with her. It had slowly been getting worse the more she spent time with Jaden, but the techniques she'd learned at the temple to maintain composure and control errant emotions no longer worked. Every time she saw Jaden it was like her emotions broke through every barrier she put up.

But when she saw that statue he had made. It had looked just like her, no it looked much better. 'Is that how he sees me,' she'd thought to herself when she looked at it. Slowly she felt her emotions start to build, like a storm inside her, so many emotions she had never experienced before. It happened everytime she saw him and would only quieten down when she made contact with him, but after seeing that statue, she had to leave or she would... well she didn't know what she would've done.

Aubrie was confused, she felt her cheeks, they were still warm. She nearly ran the rest of the way back to her quarters before locking the door and falling into her bed. She wondered what was happening to her, she hoped it wouldn't last because she didn't want to do something that would upset him. Aubrie still hadn't told Jaden she'd be leaving the Jedi order to stay with him, she didn't want to do anything to jeopardise that.

Aubrie clutched her chest, the thought of not being able to stay with Jaden had turned all the warm feelings she had inside her cold and painful. She hoped Jaden would want her, she did not have much to offer besides her skill as a Jedi, but even then Jaden had already surpassed her and he only ever humoured her with their master-apprentice bond.

'What do I do...'

————————————————————-

The next few days seemed to blend together as Jaden would train with both Satele and then Aubrie, sometimes he would even train all three Padawans together. He still felt uncomfortable doing so, to him these three girls were much more experienced in the force than he was, so he didn't think he had any business teaching them. Though they all wholeheartedly disagreed, but one benefit to teaching them was that they had helped him in increasing his skills with a lightsaber, something he was sorely lacking.

Scout, Aubrie and Zule could all beat him in pure lightsaber combat, it wasn't a surprise they'd all trained for years and knew their chosen form well, but training with them allowed him to get greater skill in Form II and Form III, both forms he'd used extensively on Jabiim. One thing he had noticed during his spars is Aubrie, she was distracted a lot which was unusual for her, especially when Scout paid more attention than her. She had said she was fine when he brought it up so Jaden left it alone, she was smart she could handle any problems by herself.

Jaden just chalked it down to her being stressed about not finding him anyone to represent him at the upcoming trial. He told her not to worry too much about it, that if it happens it happens, but it seemed this wasn't good enough. While he wasn't training he had spent lots of time in the hanger bay getting familiar with his ship, or what would be his new ship should he ever see the sunlight again. He hadn't had much time to do it before, but since he had all this free time now he went through the systems and even made some improvements where he could.

One day when he was working in the hanger bay he saw something that brought a smile to his face. "The Hammer!" He said as he rushed over to the modified AT-TE. He had assumed that it had been left behind on Jabiim. When he got closer he saw a purple skinned Twi'lek working on it, though on closer inspection she was deconstructing it.

"Hey! What are you doing!" Jaden shouted as he ran up to the woman who had welding goggles on. She turned off the plasma cutter before pulling up her googles. "What's it look like I'm pulling this old girl apart," she replied.

"What! Why?! How'd is it even here," Jaden said as a flurry of questions rushed through his mind.

"We had a couple vehicle carriers on the ship," she replied as she jumped down from the hull. "They couldn't fit many people, but if those people got into vehicles then we could transport more," she replied as Jaden got closer.

"I'm Lt. Commander Velea," she said as she took her glove off and offered her hand.

Jaden took it. "I'm Jaden, so how come you're taking her apart?" he asked, quickly returning to the subject.

Her eyes widened slightly "You're Jaden? The false Jedi?" She asked.

"I think I'd rather just be called Jaden," he said with a humourless chuckle.

She had the decency to blush slightly and rub the back of her head. "My bad, I didn't mean it like that... I mean I heard what you did... you know... on Jabiim," she said awkwardly.

Her blush deepened "I'm sorry I'm screwing this intro up," she said.

"It's fine," Jaden said "But why are you're deconstructing her?" He asked as he walked forward and put his hand on the hull.

"Are you versed in engineering or anything?" She asked as she stood next to him. "Cause it's pretty complicated," she said with a wiry smile.

"I dabble," he replied.

Velea smiled. "Well inside this tank is an engine configuration I've never seen before, in fact after all the research I've done I'm positive that it doesn't exist!" She said excitedly.

"Oh... I see," Jaden said a little awkwardly.

"Whoever built it knew that the extra weapons and repulsor lifts on the AT-TE would drain too much power and basically render it useless, but to design an entirely new engine... they are without a doubt a genius," she said as she stared her eyes wide in amazement.

"So why deconstruct her?" He asked.

"Because the crafty bugger has booby trapped the engine, if you try to disconnect it without the right code or sequence it explodes," Velea said as she hit the hull before shaking her hand slightly.

Jadens eyes widened. 'I forgot I did that,' he thought to himself. Back then he was concerned of what might happen should Alto Stratus or any other Separatists get control of the Hammer, the firepower wouldn't be too much of a problem, but reverse engineering the engine would be bad.

"I tried everything I could think of but it didn't work, so now I have to cut the tank off the engine," she said with a sigh.

"Don't you mean cut the engine off the tank?" Jaden asked.

"No..." she replied.

Jaden winced, not because of what she was doing but because it wouldn't work. As soon as the engine was disconnected from the main computer it would give you two minutes to enter a code on the engine itself, if you didn't the circuits would fry and the plasma recoil would destroy the insides so badly you would never be able to tell it was an engine.

What can he say he was a paranoid person. Not surprising considering where he'd grown up.

"Not only that, but the engine itself has been covered and a small scrambling field which is powered by the engine itself stops any scans from penetrating," Velea said as she started climbing the ladder.

"Seems pretty elaborate," Jaden said as he scratched his head.

Velea then turned on the ladder. "You were on Jabiim!" She said excitedly as she jumped off the ladder and grabbed him by the shoulders. "You were the commanding General! Surely you know who made the modifications to the AT-TE!"

Jaden shook his head "I'm afraid not, I was usually in the command centre I didn't use the hammer that much." Not much of a lie though not really the truth either. 'A nice middle ground,' he thought to himself.

Velea slumped her shoulders, all the excitement seemingly being sucked out of her. "That's a shame," she said as she sat down on a nearby chair unzipping her jumpsuit. Jaden gulped as he saw beads of sweat disappearing between the valley of her large breasts.

"I'm sure it isn't too bad, you seem smart enough, I'm sure you'll figure it out," Jaden said, he felt slightly bad due to how excited she seemed, but he wouldn't trust someone he just met with such a design. He wasn't naive not to know what an engine like that could power, and he'd had quite enough with super weapons.

"You're right! I can do this, I figured out how to land a Venator-class ship and take off again, I'll figure out how to replicate this engine," she said her enthusiasm suddenly returning.

Jaden chuckled slightly. "Want a hand? I've kinda missed getting my hands dirty with stuff like this," he asked.

Velea smiled and threw him a pair of goggles. "Be my guest, it's nice having someone here not making smart comments or looking at my breasts," she said as she pulled her own goggles down and got back to work.

"Yeah..." Jaden laughed weakly.

Despite the fact he was only watching her to make sure she didn't manage to disconnect the engine he enjoyed his time with Velea. She was witty and clearly a genius in her own field, she seemed to be more of a theoretical kind of prodigy while Jaden was more hands on, he didn't really know what he could make until he had the materials in front of him. Not to say he couldn't come up with anything, in fact he'd had to design basically all of his gadgets back when he was a bounty hunter.

As the day went on she began to get more comfortable with him and began to tell him that the only reason she'd enlisted was because she needed military grade materials and equipment for her research as well as notes on past experiments that had been classified to her before.

"Ugh," Velea grunted as she threw a hydrospanner at the leg of the armoured vehicle. "Let's go get a drink I'm done with this for the day," she said lifting her goggles up.

Jaden didn't have much to do until his training with Aubrie later so he agreed. As they walked towards the mess hall Jaden watched how the non clone officers interacted with Velea. From what he understood she was a Lieutenant Commander, and not only that but she was a member of the senior staff. It was protocol to stand at attention when a senior officer engages you or at least enters the room. Yet what Velea experienced was the entire opposite of that, they barely noticed her at all and when they did they leered at her or sometimes even shot glares at her.

"What's with the crew?" Jaden asked as they continued their walk towards the mess hall.

"What do you mean?" She asked cocking an eyebrow at him.

"It's a little strange, you're chief engineer aren't you?" How come they haven't stood at attention once?" Jaden asked.

Velea chucked. "Cause according to some rumours I've heard I'm more suited to a club than an engine room," she replied.

"That's a little..."

"Racist? Sexist? It's hard to tell when it comes to Twi'leks so I usually don't think about it," she said with a laugh.

"As long as they follow orders and do their jobs they can gossip all they want," she said as she stretched her arms above her head.

"I'm sure Novak would do something if you mentioned it," Jaden commented.

Velea shrugged. "You can't change people by force, they gotta change on their own," she said before a bright smile appeared on her face. "I can't force them to accept me, but I'll damn sure make them recognise my genius."

Jaden chuckled and shook his head before they both crossed the threshold to the mess hall. "Defender is a great ship, it's the first of its kind of have these advanced food synthesisers," she said as they made their way over to one.

Jaden nodded. "Yeah I remember using one a few times, it was pretty advanced, I'm surprised the ship could spare the power drain for such an amenity," he commented.

"Well the reactor onboard this ship is state of the art, newest of its kind, we generate twice as much power as a regular Venator-Class," Velea explained.

"Computer, a bottle of Corillian Whiskey, two glasses, two pinches of dark dust in the glass," Velea said.

*Request denied, controlled substance requested*

"Override, authorisation Velea sigma three-two-two-four."

*Acknowledged, synthesis in progress*

"Impressive," Jaden remarked as he stood next to her.

Velea grinned "Being a senior officer has its perks," she said before taking the glass bottle that had been synthesised as well as the two cups.

Jaden had never been much of a drinker. One he couldn't afford it and two impairing his senses where he lived could result in him getting robbed, or worse killed. That being said he wasn't on Coruscant anymore, nor was he on Jabiim. He could afford to relax a little, especially considering he might be getting locked away for a long time. So both of them took off out of the mess hall with their acquired goods and much to his surprise Velea took him to her lab. They had only met hours ago and yet she was showing her where she experimented, came up with ideas and in general spent most of her free time.

The first thing he noticed about the lab was that it was messy, though he wasn't too surprised based on his interactions with her thus far. When they got in she cleared a space for him on a seat by shoving some books that were on it onto the floor and then pouring him the drink. They clinked their glasses together before sipping from their drinks.

Jadens face scrunched up as he felt his taste buds being assaulted by the alcoholic drink. It was pretty rough and it burned his throat, but the more he sipped from it the more he began to like it. To his surprise it only took a glass or two for Velea to get even more rowdy than she usually was.

"When I walk into a room *burp* I am the smartest there... what just cause I have these it means I can't also be an engineer!" She complained as she grabbed her breasts and shook them for emphasis.

"I am light years too qualified to work on this ship... club my purple ass, so what if I know how to dance! What Twi'lek doesn't," she said continuing her rant.

"Just being a Twi'lek doesn't make you a good dancer," Jaden said as he leaned back in his seat.

Putting the bottle down Velea leaned forward in her seat. "Actually *burp* it does, Twi'lek... especially the females are born with an unnatural awareness and control of our bodies, we can also bend in ways that aren't normal," she explained.

"So what, that doesn't make you a good dancer, just means you have potential," Jaden argued.

"Pfffft, watch," she said as she downed the rest of her drink before. Standing up, she unlaced her boots before kicking them off she then unzipped her jumpsuit down to her belly button.

"Hey wait you don't—"

"Shhh," she interrupted. Luckily for Jaden she had a sports bra containing her breasts underneath her jumpsuit, though it didn't cover her smooth taut stomach. Velea who was clearly drunk right now started swaying gently while approaching Jaden —her hips flicked out at every movement. She then started to move her arms over her body as she began to stretch pushing her chest forward.

The next five minutes could only be described as hypnotic as she danced in front of him, sometimes getting close enough for him to feel the warmth of her skin. After a while she stopped as a smile crossed her face. "See I told you," she replied as Jaden sat there speechless.

Velea sat back down again and poured herself another drink. "I like you Jaden, you're pretty interesting to talk to, and even after my erotic dance you're still looking in my eyes."

"I've never actually let anyone in my Lab before... I must be pretty desperate for friends if I let you a couple hours after meeting," she said with a humourless chuckle.

Jaden smiled back at her. "I'd like to be friends if you're willing," he said to her.

Velea nodded her head rapidly. "It would be nice if we could talk more, especially about the Hammer, or other things," she said as she tucked her legs up beneath her chin.

"Then I look forward to our future discussions," Jaden said before glancing at the time. "However I must leave as I have a meeting with a friend," he said as he put the glass down and stood up.

Velea looked a little disappointed but she was just happy she'd found someone to talk to for longer than five minutes. "Then I'll see you soon hopefully," she said as she walked her new friend to the door and watched as he left.

When the door closed and she as alone again she crouched to the floor with her hands in her head. "What the hell was I thinking! Why did I dance like that! What is wrong with me!" She cried out as she felt embarrassment come full force from her actions.

Meanwhile as Jaden made his way to the training room that had been set aside for the Jedi, he found the person he was supposed to be meeting running towards him a smile on her face. "Master!" She shouted as she saw him which made her run faster.

Jaden caught her before she could slam into him again. "What is it Aubrie? What's going on?!" He asked slightly panicked by he excitement.

"She's awake!"

"Master Leska is awake!"

(AN: So this chapter we get introduced to Velea a bit more. There will be more interactions in the future, they both have genius levels of IQ when it comes to engineering, though Jaden is more hands on as he's guided slightly by Mecha Duru or whatever it's called. Anyway I am exhausted I'm finishing this chapter after working a nine hour shift. So I am going sleep. I hope you enjoyed the chapter.)
