Chapter 43: Forty Years of Fire and Night
Forty years ago, one morning, in a cottage surrounded by birch trees, a child was born.
"This child has light purple eyes, let's call him 'Levende'."
And thus, the newborn child had his own name.
The Butterfly Species in their youth resemble humans, with no noticeable differences. However, upon reaching adulthood, they undergo a transformation, growing beautiful wings. It is said that the most attractive Butterfly Species inevitably have the most beautiful wings. The underlying meaning of this statement is that the beauty of the wings is more important than appearance, as many abilities of the Butterfly Species rely on those wings for display.
As such, the beauty of wings almost represents the status of the Butterfly Species within their community.
"I am your cousin, you can call me Sister Molila."
When Levende was 12 years old, he met his cousin from afar. It was said that her father was his mother's brother, but they had been separated since a young age.
Molila possessed unique snow-white butterfly wings with particularly enchanting azure patterns. When she arrived at the outpost with her parents, her pretty face and wings immediately captured the attention of many young people.
"Molila is already Sequence 4, and Master Anasha said it wouldn't be too difficult for her to advance to Sequence 5." Back home, his mother spoke about this.
"A rare genius indeed." His father sighed.
"Is Sequence 5 very impressive?" At that time, Levende had no concept of this term.
Patting Levende's head, his father told him that if one had the power of Sequence 4, they could roam freely across the plains. With the power of Sequence 5, they would more or less be a local overlord and leader. Although the Butterfly Species were strong, the strongest leader was merely a Middle Rank of Sequence 6.
"This means, even though Molila is still young, she is already an upper-class figure within the community, and in a few years, she could very likely assume the position of Clan Leader."
"Sister Molila is amazing." He was full of admiration at that time.
Due to Molila's strength, in the days that followed, Levende received quite a bit of care, which made him increasingly admire and grow closer to this cousin.
At 14, in order to strengthen relationships and also to allow Levende to receive better education, his parents sent him to be tutored by Molila.
Though Molila was only 20, compared to Levende, who had just stepped into the realm of Extraordinary Cultivation, she was an impressive teacher.
During this time, Levende frequently visited his uncle's residence to study under Molila, which included basic extraordinary knowledge, weapon use, and the history of this world.
"Sister Molila knows so much, did you learn it all by yourself before?" One day, Levende asked his cousin, who was sitting alone in the woods. Bathed in the morning light, she was like an Angel from an ancient poem.
"No, I learned from a Sage from the distant Northern region. He said that when he was young, he encountered a Miracle and thus gained knowledge unimaginable to ordinary people."
"What does this God look like?" Levende instinctively asked with curiosity.
"Divine." Molila's snow-blue wings behind her gently flapped, and a light breeze also blew through the woods.
"Probably like us, with wings, I suppose."
"Since we are a creation of God, we must bear some shadow of the Divine." Molila sighed.
"Then can we become gods?" Levende continued to ask.
"In theory, there is a very faint and small possibility."
"But probably not achievable now." Molila stood up slightly, walked toward Levende, squatted a bit, and patted the not-yet-grown boy.
For a child in puberty, this older sister with light golden hair, snow-white skin, and a captivating figure was undoubtedly a source of admiration in dreams.
Watching Levende staring blankly at her, Molila laughed, a sight that Levende would remember for decades and never forget.
Subsequently, Molila stood up, gazed at the sky, and shared her views on gods with Levende.
"Divinity certainly exists, we are the continuation of the Divine. One day, when the Butterfly Species once again covers this planet, the Divine will appear and praise our efforts."
"Will they reward me?" Levende couldn't help but ask.
"Yes, little Levende will be rewarded." Molila said with a wink, then took Levende's hand, leading him to her own little house nestled with flowers and grass in the woods. There, she kept some bees and would use honey to make delightful desserts as a reward for Levende's training.
And just like that, time passed unknowingly. If everything had stayed in the first 18 years of life, it might have been quite a lovely dream.
...
Twenty-two years ago, a devastating fire struck the birch forest where the Butterfly Species lived. Armed with long knives and torches, the Wolf Blood Species stormed into the Butterfly Species' stronghold, unleashing a massacre. The flames and thick smoke filled the night sky, and the Butterfly Species children, who couldn't yet fly, ran in panic in the firelight, while in the sky and treetops, the adult Butterfly Species faced even more frenzied mechanical slaughterers.
Dots of flashing red filled the sky, each pair representing a Wingsbeat-flying Mechanical Autonomous Unit. These Mechanical Bodies, mimicking dragonflies, moved incredibly fast and were particularly agile in the air. Wherever their sharp wings reached, one Butterfly Species after another was cut and ripped apart. The Illusion Technique and Charming abilities that the Butterfly Species excelled at were almost useless against these Mechanical Autonomous Units.
