Chapter 2023: -1981- Something terrifying
Yamashiro Hayato is a rising star who obtained his National First-Class Onmyoji qualification just this year.
In other words, within the Twelve Divine Generals, Yamashiro Hayato is undoubtedly a newcomer.
He is a disciple of the Kurahashi family and a direct apprentice of Kurahashi Genji. He also once studied at the Onmyo Academy. At 19 years old, he had already left the academy by the time Rozen enrolled, narrowly missing any interaction with him.
However, Yamashiro Hayato did not leave after graduation; instead, he voluntarily dropped out at the end of his second year, without advancing to the third year.
According to him:
"The Onmyo Academy has nothing left to teach me."
At first glance, this statement might seem arrogant, but it is, in fact, the truth.
Even before Rozen entered the academy, Yamashiro Hayato was already recognized as the most outstanding student of his generation, displaying extraordinary talent. As a result, he obtained his professional Onmyoji qualification at a very young age and even secured the title of National First-Class Onmyoji this year, earning him a place among the Twelve Divine Generals and high expectations from the Onmyo Agency's upper echelons.
Due to a shortage of personnel in the Magic Crimes Investigation Department, Yamashiro Hayato was assigned there, becoming the third National First-Class Onmyoji in the department, following Amami Daizen and Kogure Zenjirou.
Compared to Kogure Zenjirou, who specializes in exorcising Spiritual Disasters, Yamashiro Hayato, like Amami Daizen, excels in jujutsu-based combat against humans, making him an exceptionally qualified Magic Crimes Investigator.
Unfortunately, because he is still young, newly appointed, and has just entered the Twelve Divine Generals, the weight of expectations on him has made him overly eager to achieve merits. Combined with his natural brilliance, he tends to come across as arrogant.
However, Yamashiro Hayato is also remarkably well-mannered, leaving no room for criticism. This frustrates Kagami Reiji, who finds him irritating yet cannot lash out at him.
At this moment, Yamashiro Hayato turned to Amami Daizen, smiling as he spoke.
"Chief Amami, I hope I haven't disappointed you so much that you've forgotten I am part of the Magic Crimes Investigation Department?"
Though his tone appeared respectful, there was a hint of dissatisfaction beneath it. Clearly, Yamashiro Hayato was displeased with Amami Daizen's earlier remarks.
"I was referring to the time before you joined, young man," Amami Daizen responded casually. "Don't be so impatient. You won't make a great Magic Crimes Investigator with that attitude."
Yamashiro Hayato's expression darkened slightly, but before he could reply, Kagami Reiji cut in.
"What a load of crap. Do you think I don't know you've already brought back that guy Ohtomo and put him under your command again?"
Kagami Reiji leaned forward, crossing his legs, his gaze sharp and filled with hostility toward Amami Daizen.
"That guy is also one of the Twelve Divine Generals, isn't he? How long do you plan to hide him? Call him out already!"
As he spoke, Kagami Reiji's aura grew even more violent.
Yet, no one present found this unusual.
Everyone knew that Kagami Reiji and Ohtomo Jin had a complicated history.
In the past, when Kagami Reiji was briefly assigned to the Magic Crimes Investigation Department, his mentor was none other than Ohtomo Jin.
Because of this, Ohtomo Jin exposed Kagami Reiji to many of the Onmyo world's darker aspects. He also frequently put Kagami Reiji through harsh experiences, often pushing him to his limits.
As a result, Kagami Reiji developed a deep fixation on surpassing Ohtomo Jin. Whether this was hatred or something else was hard to say.
Despite his aggressive nature, everyone knew that Kagami Reiji only fixated on strong opponents.
In other words, he recognized Ohtomo Jin as a worthy adversary, which is why he viewed him as a target to surpass.
However, about a year and a half ago, Kagami Reiji's greatest enemy had changed to someone else.
Even so, his obsession with Ohtomo Jin had not faded.
Amami Daizen, aware of this, simply shrugged.
"I have no idea where that guy is. People call him my right-hand man, but what kind of right-hand man disappears all the time? If you want to know his whereabouts, ask Kogure. He was the one paired with that brat to track down the Tsuchimikado."
Upon hearing this, Kagami Reiji turned his sharp gaze toward Kogure Zenjirou.
However, instead of being intimidated, Kogure Zenjirou returned the glare with a chilling stare, one that even the Ogre Eater Kagami Reiji found unsettling.
"There's been some movement on the Tsuchimikado side. Jin has already gone ahead."
A simple statement that explained the situation.
"Tch..."
Kagami Reiji clicked his tongue in frustration but said no more.
At that moment, Yuge Mari finally spoke up.
"Since Ohtomo-senpai is unavailable, and both Shigeoka Shunsuke and the Kadei sisters are preoccupied, should we proceed with the meeting using the members present?"
It seemed that the ever-methodical Binding Princess Yuge Mari was growing impatient with the atmosphere and wanted to wrap things up quickly.
Finally, the last remaining middle-aged man in the room spoke.
"This matter might be serious. That's why, after I reported it, the Director decided to hold this meeting."
Upon hearing this, everyone froze momentarily before understanding dawned on them.
"So, you mean this meeting was convened because you discovered something, Miyoshi Tougo?"
Yamashiro Hayato immediately inquired.
"Special Spirit Investigator."
This title referred to a National First-Class Onmyoji among the Spirit Investigators.
The Spirit Investigators were individuals with exceptional Spirit Sight, allowing them to perceive jujutsu fluctuations more keenly than regular Onmyoji.
Before the advent of automated Spiritual Disaster detection systems, it was these investigators who identified and reported Spiritual Disasters, ensuring that Onmyoji could respond in time.
They patrolled the city, monitoring jujutsu levels. Their reports allowed the Exorcism Bureau to dispatch responders who, in turn, relayed real-time information to the Information Division, which processed it for display on the command center's main screen.
The speed and efficiency of Spiritual Disaster response—and the minimization of casualties—relied entirely on the Spirit Investigators' abilities.
These individuals, though not widely known, were indispensable to the Exorcism Bureau.
Among the current Spirit Investigators, three National First-Class Onmyoji stood out as crucial figures.
Their Spirit Sight was so extraordinary that they were considered the Onmyo Agency's greatest assets. Without them, countless lives in Tokyo would be lost to Spiritual Disasters.
These three individuals were known as Special Spirit Investigators, or Special Investigators for short.
Two of them were the Kadei sisters, Byakuran and Kurogiku.
The last one—the most powerful among them—was the middle-aged man who had just spoken: Miyoshi Tougo.
Although his jujutsu abilities were unremarkable, his Spirit Sight was reputed to be the strongest in the Onmyo Agency. His importance surpassed even that of the Twelve Divine Generals, second only to figures like Kurahashi Genji, Miyachi Iwao, and Amami Daizen.
This meeting had been called because of Miyoshi Tougo's discovery.
"I don't even know how to describe it," Miyoshi Tougo said grimly.
"All I can say is... something truly terrifying has appeared in Tokyo."
"Something extremely, extremely terrifying."
"If we are not careful, this time... the Onmyo Agency may be finished."
At these words, the atmosphere in the room turned heavy.
