Chapter 1882: -1841- A glimpse into the past
"Whoo—!"
The wind roared, stirring up sand and dust that swept across the land.
At this moment, Rozen and Mash stood atop a barren, rocky hill devoid of greenery, gazing into the distance.
The sight before them was one of desolation.
No forests.
No rivers.
No people.
No flowers or grass.
What lay ahead was a wasteland of dirt and stone, punctuated only by scattered flames. It looked as though magma was churning beneath the earth, ready to erupt at any moment, creating a scene that was both unsettling and awe-inspiring.
And yet, that wasn't the most alarming aspect.
What truly shocked them were the massive, crater-like depressions scattered across the land, resembling impact craters.
Rozen and Mash gazed upon this spectacle, one with flickering eyes, the other with a complicated expression.
As for Chaldea's Roman and the others, they had already erupted in astonishment.
"What's with all those craters?" Olga Marie exclaimed, her face full of shock.
"In this era, are there such craters around Jerusalem?" Da Vinci asked with a deep frown.
"There's no way," Roman muttered, momentarily speechless.
The sight before them shocked everyone to varying degrees. Even Rozen, who had grown accustomed to witnessing all kinds of landscapes, was lost in thought.
"In this era, there shouldn't be craters like these near Jerusalem," Rozen stated confidently. "This terrain isn't natural—it's the result of destruction caused by human intervention."
Rozen's words articulated the thoughts in everyone's minds.
Precisely because of this, they were shaken to their core, collectively gasping.
"Human intervention?" Mash asked with a solemn expression. "What kind of human intervention could leave the land in such devastation?"
The answer to that question was obvious.
"Besides the Noble Phantasms of Servants, what else in this era could cause such destruction?" Rozen's calm words cast a heavy pall over everyone's hearts.
But this was the most plausible explanation.
In this era, the 13th century, nuclear weapons, which in modern times serve as humanity's ultimate destructive force, did not exist. Any one of them could easily create disasters on the scale of these craters, but such technology was far beyond the reach of this time.
Even mages of this era would be incapable of causing such widespread devastation.
Thus, the only possibility was Noble Phantasms wielded by Servants. And not just any Noble Phantasms—these had to be anti-fortress Noble Phantasms of considerable rank.
At the very least, Rozen was sure of one thing.
"If this devastation was caused by a Servant's Noble Phantasm, its destructive power would rival that of a Beast Vassal at the level of a Primogenitor."
In other words, it was a catastrophe-level force of destruction.
And worse, there was no way to know whether this destruction represented the Noble Phantasm's full release.
If this devastation had occurred with restraint...
"This Singularity is going to be a challenge," Rozen murmured.
After all, it wasn't just the landscape that worried him. Ever since entering this Singularity, Rozen's Mind's Eye had been picking up unsettling vibrations.
With the continuous sublimation of Foreign Mana, Rozen's brain had undergone multiple developments, enhanced further by Virtual Ether, allowing his Mind's Eye to ascend to a level beyond the divine. At full release, it could perceive several minutes—or even tens of minutes—into the future.
Yet even with such an evolved Mind's Eye, Rozen found that the microcosm within this Singularity was consistently unstable, as if on the verge of being torn apart or destroyed.
And what did this signify?
It signified that this Singularity was at risk of collapsing.
If that happened, it would spell disaster.
"I'm not sure how many real phenomena I can observe in this unstable microcosm, nor whether my Mind's Eye will remain unaffected during battle."
Such thoughts weighed on Rozen.
As he stared at the enormous craters, an idea formed in his mind.
"Perhaps I should give it a try."
Rozen's Mind's Eye wasn't limited to perceiving the present and future—it could also see the past.
If the land had endured a moment of destruction within the past few minutes or tens of minutes, Rozen's fully released Mind's Eye should be able to catch a glimpse of that event.
Acting on this thought, Rozen closed his eyes.
He focused all his mental energy on his Mind's Eye, gradually unleashing its power.
"Senpai?"
Mash's surprised voice reached him, perhaps noticing his unusual state.
"Rozen?"
"Rozen?"
"Rozen?"
Roman, Da Vinci, and Olga Marie also seemed to sense something, calling out in confusion.
"Fou! Fou!"
Even Fou approached, rubbing against Rozen's leg.
But Rozen was oblivious to it all.
To fully utilize the highest level of his Mind's Eye, Rozen needed to concentrate all his mental faculties.
Thus, he shut out all physical sensations.
Thus, he ignored everything around him.
Rozen's consciousness expanded outward, delving into space and time, extending farther and farther until it enveloped the entire world.
As Rozen's awareness deepened, the surface layers of the world peeled away, and countless records began to flow into his perception.
Rozen read the records of the world itself, searching for the past of this desolate land.
After an indeterminate amount of time, Rozen finally saw it.
He saw a corner of this pockmarked land, where once stood a large village.
The village was bustling, home to people of all kinds.
Some prayed sincerely.
Some sowed seeds and harvested crops.
Children chased one another, laughing.
Adults worked diligently.
The scene was one of warmth and beauty.
Until a blinding light appeared.
"Buzz—!"
The air hummed as an immense pillar of light descended from the heavens.
The atmosphere evaporated.
The clouds were blown away.
Like divine judgment, the pillar of light struck the village, consuming everything.
"—"
The world was engulfed in radiant brilliance.
"Ugh...!"
Rozen's head suddenly throbbed with pain, and he instinctively clutched his head, snapping back to reality.
"Se-Senpai! Are you alright!?" Mash cried out in alarm as she saw Rozen grimace and press his hand to his forehead.
"What's wrong!?"
"What happened!?"
"Are you experiencing any abnormalities!?"
Olga Marie, Da Vinci, and Roman all reacted with concern, their expressions changing drastically.
"No, I'm fine. Don't worry."
Rozen raised a hand to reassure them, shaking his head as he reopened his eyes.
But the vision he had just witnessed was seared into his mind.
"Senpai..." Mash supported him, still looking worried.
"Don't worry." Rozen patted her hand.
However, he chose not to reveal the scene he had just glimpsed to the others.
He merely said this:
"For now, let's head to the Holy Land and figure out what's going on with this Singularity."
Hearing Rozen's words, the group, though still concerned, could only nod.
Rozen and Mash, accompanied by Fou, left the area.
