Chapter 317: Breaking Through the Soil
"Has everyone put on their stickers? If so, let's set off. Teacher Tian, you can start driving now!"
"Heavenly Lotus Academy is located in the Yanlin District of Lianjiang, typically accessible by bus and Subway Line 9. Since Yanlin District is in the outskirts, there are no shopping centers nearby, but the campus itself houses supermarkets, shopping centers, and a cinema. Moreover, it has partnerships with the top four express delivery companies in the country, making online shopping exceedingly convenient..."
As the bus moved along, a student with a crew cut raised his hand. Gu Yueyan, who was introducing Heavenly Lotus Academy, paused and asked, "What is it?"
"Are all the teachers at the academy Cultivators?" the student with a crew cut excitedly inquired. "Can they soar high and low, command the wind and rain, bring the dead to life and mend broken bones? Can students truly gain Extraordinary Strength?"
Initially indifferent to the academy's introduction, the other students began to pay attention. They had joined Cultivator University not only because of the government's endorsement of Heavenly Lotus Academy but also due to the relentless bombardment of various online videos featuring Transcendents. Some even knew people who had become Transcendents. Thus, they couldn't resist the academy's offered opportunity.
Even so, they had many concerns. After all, they were forsaking life goals from the past decade or more and opting out of pursuing a prestigious university. Choosing to join a newly established Cultivator University with an uncertain future naturally made for genuine trepidation.
Upon admission, these students had received countless praises. Even the local civic offices came to congratulate them, sparking cheers throughout their schools. If the academy fell short of their expectations, how would they explain it to their families upon returning?
After a moment's thought, Gu Yueyan reached out and flicked Lin Xianyu, who was nodding off with her eyes half-closed. Lin Xianyu exclaimed, looking at Gu Yueyan with discontent, "What is it, Class President?"
"Come on, show us what you're best at," Gu Yueyan urged.
"Oh, is that really necessary?" Lin Xianyu replied reluctantly.
"Hurry up," Gu Yueyan insisted.
Reluctantly, Lin Xianyu stood up. Unperturbed by the dozen or so pairs of eyes on her, she steadied her stance, let out a sharp cry, and delivered a Right Straight Punch!
In an instant, a fierce wind swept through the bus, blowing everyone's hair back and making it difficult for them to keep their eyes open.
"That was Classmate Lin dispersing her power. If she concentrated it, breaking through solid rock would be easy for her. This is her Awakening Ability, which has progressively strengthened through continuous study at the academy," Gu Yueyan explained.
"Awakened spells," the student with a crew cut said wistfully.
Gu Yueyan smiled faintly. She went to the lower level of the bus and soon returned with a fruit knife. "What Classmate Lin demonstrated was the benefit the school offers to Awakeners. Now, I will show you the advantages ordinary people gain from Cultivation."
Without any hesitation, Gu Yueyan gripped the blade of the knife with her left hand, fully wrapping her palm around it, and then she forcefully pulled the fruit knife out!
The new students in the front row flinched, but they quickly realized the fruit knife was not bloody. Gu Yueyan displayed her left hand; it was pristine and unmarked.
"Every ordinary student, upon becoming a Cultivator, can learn this spell—'Clothing.' With this spell, as long as there is sufficient Spiritual Energy, a Cultivator can create a layer of Aura Garment on their skin's surface. This Aura Garment can perfectly negate ordinary impacts, stabs, and slashes. While it cannot completely block firearms, falls from great heights, or impacts from large vehicles, it can significantly reduce most of the damage," she explained.
"One could say that as long as you become a First Transformation Cultivator and master 'Clothing,' you will no longer suffer serious injuries from ordinary accidents in your life."
Although the chances of personal injury have significantly decreased in modern society, no one would complain about an 'Impervious to Swords and Spears' buff. Knowing they could also learn such an ability, the new students' faces lit up with joy—this spell alone, they felt, made spending years at the academy worthwhile.
Seeing the new students awe-struck, Gu Yueyan nodded in satisfaction. "And this is just a small fraction of the benefits of being a Cultivator. At university, we can learn many more types of spells—Healing Series, Production Series, Offensive Series...
"The academy's newly constructed building, for instance, was built by Cultivators from the Production Series; they erected a seven-story building in less than a week.
"The academy also has Healing Cultivators who can treat most wounds directly without leaving any scars. They can instantly heal severe injuries involving muscles and bones, and even cure acne.
"Of course, I'm not currently sure exactly how these spells are taught. But as long as you diligently practice and enhance your Cultivation Realm, possessing Extraordinary Strength is just a matter of time.
"Even if your Talent isn't great, mastering a particular skill can still make you a vital asset. I know a lazy Cultivator who works no more than 30 hours a month. He earns a handsome income simply because he possesses a core technology that is currently scarce…"
Suddenly, the bus turned sharply, causing everyone seated to sway. Only Gu Yueyan, who was standing, remained perfectly stable. She glanced back and sighed, "Is the road ahead blocked by an accident?"
The road to the Yanlin District was merely a two-lane highway. A large truck had overturned, blocking both lanes. Ambulances and fire trucks were at the scene, apparently tending to the injured.
A traffic officer at the T-junction was blowing his whistle, signaling the bus to change routes, which is why it suddenly turned and took a detour on a more remote road through the woods.
This wasn't a paved highway but a relatively smooth dirt road. Nevertheless, the bus remained stable enough for Gu Yueyan to continue her introduction to the academy. About fifteen minutes later, as the bus entered the latter half of the wooded road, it suddenly braked hard!
The braking was so abrupt that even Gu Yueyan had to grab a seat to steady herself. Before she could ask Teacher Tian, the driver, what had happened, a loud explosion erupted from above the bus!
The ear-piercing sound of tearing metal reverberated, followed by a violent tremor and a harsh screech. The new students then saw the bus's roof being ripped open!
Hovering above the bus was a figure in a gray robe, who with one hand effortlessly tore off the bus's roof, flinging it aside as if it were a piece of clear tape!
"A Transcendent!"
The new students from Cultivator University immediately recognized the figure's identity and began to tremble. Their understanding of Transcendents, aside from flashy online videos, mostly came from Ren Naiser's videos.
Therefore, they believed Transcendents were either weak, only capable of making silly videos, or overwhelmingly strong, overshadowing all others. This Transcendent was clearly the latter!
"Who are you!?"
Teacher Tian, the driver, came forward, his expression grave as he looked at the gray-robed figure. "You dare to attack Heavenly Lotus Academy!?"
"Why wouldn't I dare?"
A sinister voice echoed as the gray-robed figure stood on the edge of the torn bus roof, looking down at everyone. The new students were instantly terrified by his appearance. His mouth was so rotten his tooth roots were visible, his eye sockets were sunken with bulging eyes, and his face, devoid of eyebrows and facial hair, was a mass of wrinkles. He looked exactly like a Wicked Ghost from 'Over My Dead Body'!
"Thank you for selecting these fine specimens," the gray-robed figure said coldly. "Peach Blossom Land will take them."
"Peach Blossom Land… It's actually Necropolis Peach Blossom Land!?" Teacher Tian's face drained of color. He yelled, "Run! Peach Blossom Land wants to capture you!"
The students seemed petrified. Teacher Tian pulled a small revolver from his waist and fired a shot into the sky. Even in broad daylight, a dazzling golden lotus insignia bloomed momentarily.
"Only the dead can join Peach Blossom Land!" Teacher Tian kicked out a window. "I'll hold him off! You run! I've sent a distress signal; help from the academy will be here soon—"
"Can you escape?"
At that moment, the gray-robed figure drew a dagger, casually slashing it towards the bus's longitudinal axis.
The blade of the dagger vanished as he raised it, only to reappear as he slashed down. Teacher Tian's face turned deathly pale.
"Run—!"
After shouting his last word, a line of blood erupted down Teacher Tian's torso. He split open along this line, crimson blood spraying as his body tore in two, organs spilling onto the floor.
AAAH—!
Accompanied by the students' screams, the entire bus was also sliced in half, its sections toppling to either side. With the roof already gone, the students were nearly thrown from the vehicle.
Did I use too much force...? The gray-robed man floated to the ground. "Oh well. Come, become members of Peach Blossom Land. Don't even think about escaping. Otherwise, don't blame me if you don't even have a whole corpse left."
He smiled sinisterly. "Your Talent is excellent. Out of twenty of you, perhaps two or three could become Ghosts and join us in Peach Blossom Land..."
His words completely extinguished any lingering hope the students might have had. Even if they surrendered, they would die. And even in death, there was only a 10% chance they could become Ghosts and join Peach Blossom Land. They certainly didn't believe their luck was that good!
Just then, the roar of tires frictioning against the road approached from afar. Within a mere seven seconds, the students saw a sports car, initially a distant black dot, speeding towards them!
The gray-robed man scoffed. He extended his left palm towards the sports car, and the vehicle spun and leaped into the air as if it had slammed into an invisible wall, making the students' hearts clench!
Without a doubt, that sports car was coming to save us! But was it defeated by a Peach Blossom Necromancer in a single move?
"Stay away from my students!"
Suddenly, Ice Spires erupted from the sports car's chassis. Ice Pillars then extended from the car, plunging into the ground and stabilizing the spinning vehicle in mid-air. The car door opened, and a handsome man, dressed in trendy winter clothing and emanating a palpable chill, stepped out, adjusting his scarf.
He walked out from the airborne sports car, and as he moved, ice formed steps under his feet, supporting him as he looked down at the gray-robed man below.
"Bai Ji, a teacher from Heavenly Lotus Academy? Heavenly Lotus Academy... you're the only one there with some actual strength. But you say they're your students? No, they are *my* students. And my students' teaching materials."
The gray-robed man sneered coldly. "Dissections can't very well have the students bring their own corpses, can they? I, too, care deeply about my students—"
While saying this, he manipulated the two halves of the bus to fly and crash towards Bai Ji!
Bai Ji immediately condensed layers of ice to block the bus's impact, his expression solemn. "As long as I'm here, you won't hurt them!"
"Is that so?" The gray-robed man smiled, then yelled in a raspy voice, "People of Peach Blossom Land! Rise from your coffins! Break free from the earth!"
The new students, who had just thought they were saved, watched in horror as skinny, moldering arms suddenly erupted from the nearby ground!
Bai Ji's face turned pale. He yelled, "Run! Quickly!"
Soon, figures in gray robes, their faces corpselike and horrifyingly ghastly, clawed their way out of the earth.
"Zombies!?" A stocky student with a buzz cut mustered his courage and threw a punch at the nearest gray-robed figure.
Unexpectedly, the robed figure caught his fist first, squeezed it hard, making the student cry out in pain. He was then effortlessly flung against a tree, leaving him doubled over, his stomach churning in agony.
"All of you, run quickly! Other teachers will be here soon! We will definitely save you!" Bai Ji bellowed, still fiercely battling the lead gray-robed man.
This time, the students fully reacted, each one sprinting into the forest. A few whose legs had gone weak, some even wetting themselves in fear, finally mustered the courage to flee.
"That boy did well; even though his legs were shaking, he still managed to run away with his girlfriend."
"They're scattered quite widely. I'll head to Zone C2."
"Then I'll head to Zone B4."
"Be careful not to get counter-killed."
After scaring away all the students, the Peach Blossom Land actors began to divide their pursuit zones. Ren Suo, at the side, spat. He had rehearsed the 'rising from the coffin' act dozens of times, but this was his first time actually breaking through the soil. He hadn't done it smoothly and had swallowed some dirt in the process.
Ren Suo glanced at the battlefield. Liao Yonghai and Bai Ji were still fighting fiercely, the scene filled with loud noises and intense visuals. They were to fight for a full thirty minutes to convince the students this attack was real.
"Bai Ji is an Ice System Spell Awakened. Although Brother Liao isn't an Awakener, he has a high affinity with Iron-series Magic," Zhao Huo remarked from the side.
"Even though Brother Liao is only second turn, he can easily use third turn Iron-series Magic. He's no weaker than Bai Ji."
"So don't feel inferior. Although you're not an Awakener, you have an affinity with the life system! In the future, when you master techniques like a Great Resurrection Technique or the Vigor Technique, you'll be just as competitive, no worse than Bai Ji!"
Zhao Huo's excited thought echoed: The key is the Vigor Technique!
Ren Suo ignored him, preparing to follow the plan and play the 'I'm going to chase you, and if I catch you, you'll get the hehehe treatment' game with the students. Suddenly, his eyebrows twitched. The Listening Headphones hanging around his neck as a mere decoration unexpectedly activated:
"Detected that a nearby bonding partner's emotional fluctuation has exceeded the critical point. Attempting to deepen the Bond Relationship is recommended."
"Detected that a nearby bonding partner's emotional fluctuation has exceeded the critical point. Attempting to deepen the Bond Relationship is recommended."
These headphones also come with mission prompts?

"Have you found it?"
"Not here, we've walked all the way to the edge..."
In the Wuling Mountain Grand Canyon Scenic Area, a group of staff members followed a mountain path. They were checking corners by the roadside, nearby trash bins, and posting notices asking visitors if they had seen a deep black vest.
"Brother Chen, it's already 6 p.m. Aren't we off work yet?" Xiao Huang complained.
"It's going to get dark soon at this rate..." Brother Chen sighed. "Let me ask the manager..."
Suddenly, they heard a rustling noise and looked around, but saw nothing unusual.
"Brother Chen, what was that noise?" Xiao Huang asked apprehensively. He had heard the old local saying: 'In the Bottomless Pit coils a giant python; in the Abyssal Cave hides a Monster. The white monkey descends to play tricks; domestic pigs and wild boars are now lovers.' He also knew tourists had reported seeing strange Ghosts in the scenic area...
"It must be the soil loosening below, causing a small landslide with the vegetation. There's a river right below; it's quite normal." Brother Chen grabbed the railing, glancing down the mountain path. "It happens often. As long as it doesn't endanger the path, it's fine. Come on, let's go find the manager."
Brother Chen and Xiao Huang followed the mountain path and left. Consequently, they failed to see what lay below the area of the landslide, hidden by trees in a dirt hole—the very items they were searching for.
This was, after all, the outermost mountain path in the scenic area, not frequently visited. Even from a different angle, the trees obscured the dirt hole from view.
In that dirt hole, besides a vest, boots, Heart-Shaped Sunglasses, and Buddha Beads, there was also a section of pale bone, seemingly emerging from the soil… a hand bone.
