Chapter 157: Hold Awake

A midnight crimson meteor shower heralded a new wave of Spiritual Energy revival.

The only problem was, this seemed to be an event exclusive to the Mysterious Country.

The vast territory of the Mysterious Country experienced a wave of changes affecting over a billion people due to the opening of the Spirit Treasury, which naturally could not be concealed. In fact, from the first night the crimson aurora appeared in Sky Capital, other countries began to pay attention to the changes there.

In this treacherous and turbulent era, nothing that happened was particularly unusual; it could be an opportunity, or it could be a danger.

Intelligence agents from various countries gathered in Sky Capital, perhaps hoping to pick up an easy score or enjoy the spectacle with schadenfreude, but mostly to gather information on how their own countries should respond to similar situations in the future.

At first, most powers did not consider this a good thing. After all, the aurora had arrived in a bizarre manner and appeared in the capital of the Mysterious Country. The slightest misstep could lead to a terrifying blow to its political, economic, scientific, and urban center. Moreover, after it appeared multiple times around the same hour on consecutive days, the various nations grew even more convinced this couldn't be anything good.

Although the time of each red light eruption was similar, it always varied by a few minutes to over ten minutes. This suggested it was influenced not by natural factors, but by human ones—the red light was very likely an artificial phenomenon, explaining the temporal inconsistencies.

Considering the 'Jedi Priest' trials from a few days prior, the various powers suspected that someone in the Mysterious Country had also foolishly activated some demonic secret rite or divine treasure. The Pacific Federation, of course, had already determined that the three deities in 'Jedi Priest' were likely connected to a few youngsters who had been causing trouble on livestreams. Although those three deities hadn't caused much trouble, the Pacific Federation had been forced to create countless emergency plans that month because of them.

Never mind the possibility of someone summoning powerful entities from the endless, distant cosmos; the mere presence of these three deities was enough to make them tear their hair out. After all, a power that could fundamentally heal Living Beings could also fundamentally destroy them.

The problem, however, was that the eventual victors of the 'Jedi Priest' trials were not Federal people. The Federation couldn't even find a channel to communicate with them and could only pray cautiously using the images and impressions they had of the three deities, leaving the effectiveness of such prayers entirely to the deities' whims.

Now, it seemed the Mysterious Country had also been affected by mysterious forces. If it were just a trial, that would be one thing. But if it were the arrival of an Evil God or Demon, hehehe... then it would be their misfortune, and the other powers could simply watch the spectacle and collect data.

Regardless, if uncontrollable supernatural phenomena were to occur in Sky Capital, the resulting turmoil could cause the Mysterious Country to lose billions in assets.

Then came the meteor shower, and the various powers were stunned.

"The Spiritual Energy density in the Capital, Sky Capital, has increased by 224%?"

"The Spiritual Energy density in other cities has also rapidly increased. Even Hainan, at the furthest edge, has seen a 98% increase compared to before, and it's still gradually rising?"

"It has been preliminarily confirmed that the red meteors are related to Awakening. Almost all humans struck by a red meteor have had their Talent boosted and have awakened exclusive Abilities."

"But the Spiritual Energy density starts to decrease at the Mysterious Country's border checkpoints, returning to normal levels within less than a kilometer."

"There are no sightings of red meteors flying towards the neighboring countries of Mysterious Country!"

Consequently, all powers intensified their efforts, willing to pay any price to uncover what exactly happened in Sky Capital on the night of May 31!

"Sky Capital's emergency response system, Public Security system, and armed police system are all searching for a Pangolin-like animal within Sky Capital."

"At 1:16 AM on June 1st, roads running south to north in Sky Capital, including Tangli Road and Anfour Road, were temporarily closed."

"At 3:30 AM on June 1st, six helicopters flew from Sky Capital towards the North Wild Forest Nature Reserve."

"At 4:13 AM on June 1st, traffic routes near the North Wild Forest Nature Reserve were completely sealed off."

"At 5:30 AM on June 1st, major traffic control measures were implemented on roads leading from the North Wild Forest Nature Reserve towards restricted areas of Sky Capital. A large convoy appeared, seemingly transporting important items."

"Current conclusion: The Mysterious Country actually did not know about, nor did it participate in creating, this Spiritual Energy eruption, but they have captured the perpetrator."

When Ren Suo woke up, he mumbled softly, feeling saliva wetting his right cheek and instinctively wanting to lift his hand to wipe it off.

His hand didn't respond.

It wasn't that his hand was gone; Ren Suo just felt that the gravity of reality was too heavy, especially for his hands. It was as if he had a cold, his limbs feeling as heavy and powerless as if they were dragging lead weights.

However, the rest of his body didn't feel this way, and his mind felt normal, without the confusion of being ill.

"You're awake?"

Dong Chengling's voice seemed to be very close. Her breath, carrying the scent of mint, brushed against Ren Suo's fringe as she spoke, the fragrance flooding his nostrils.

Ren Suo opened his eyes and saw Dong Chengling just thirty centimeters in front of him. They were both lying on a soft bed, resting on pure white pillows. Just imagining this scenario gives a sort of 'morning after' feeling, he thought.

Noticing that Ren Suo's mouth moved, Dong Chengling quickly said, "Don't talk. Miss Qiao!"

"Awake?"

A familiar female voice came from the doorway. Ren Suo opened his eyes and tried to turn his head to glance at her, but the light was so dazzling that he could only see a familiar silhouette.

"Open your mouth, don't lick."

Before Ren Suo could react, a slender hand stuffed two soft, spongy, elastic pellets into his mouth and then covered it, "Chew quickly. Don't talk."

"MPH MPH MPH—"

As his pupils finally adjusted to the light, Ren Suo found himself in a white room. There was a small, square window to his left and a bright, small incandescent light on the ceiling. The texture of the room's walls felt strangely unfamiliar.

The one covering his mouth was his acquaintance, Qiao Muyi.

After a few muffled sounds, Ren Suo tasted the lemon flavor spreading in his mouth, thought for a moment, and then started to chew, feeling his mouth full of sticky foam.

Qiao Muyi let go of her hand. "We can't let you brush your teeth or rinse your mouth right now. You've got travel toothpaste pellets in your mouth."

She took out a toothbrush dampened with water. "Open your mouth."

Ren Suo obediently opened his mouth. Although I don't know what's happening, being pampered by a beautiful woman is something to be enjoyed first and worried about later, he thought.

Qiao Muyi had a strange smile on her face as she slowly brushed Ren Suo's teeth. The bristles worked the toothpaste into an even richer foam. Her movements were gentle, and Ren Suo felt his gums were very comfortable.

For some reason, Ren Suo noticed that Dong Chengling's expression was getting darker by the second. After about ten seconds, Dong Chengling couldn't help saying, "Done yet?"

"Not clean yet..."

"Enough!"

Qiao Muyi shrugged her shoulders and pulled back the toothbrush. "Since you're awake now, sit up."

Dong Chengling nodded and, without using her hands to push herself up from the bed, sat up straight with sheer core strength—

Wow, with that kind of core strength, not even all Cultivators of the same level could handle it... Ren Suo thought. To his surprise, his own limp body was pulled up by Dong Chengling's movement.

"Eh?" Ren Suo was startled. He then realized that his hands were clasped around Dong Chengling's forearms; they were holding hands like kindergarten children playing a game.

When Ren Suo tried to free himself from Dong Chengling's hands, a vast repulsive force appeared in the space around them, and Dong Chengling's hands clung to Ren Suo's like huge magnets.

Qiao Muyi handed a cup of water to Ren Suo's lips. He took a big gulp and, GLUG GLUG, spat it out, followed by a couple of PTOOEYS, expelling the last of the water as if he were dribbling after peeing.

He heard the roar of turbines in his ears and saw the blue sky and the clouds below through the window.

Ren Suo looked around, glanced at his and Dong Chengling's joined hands, and the nearby Qiao Muyi.

He noticed a person dressed in Black Body Armor pass by the half-closed door—it was his former boss, You Jilong.

Ren Suo sighed softly and looked at the two women seriously.

"Don't blame us for making you brush your teeth first. It's mainly because you ate quite a lot last night, and as soon as you opened your mouth, there was an odor... If you have anything you want to say now, just go ahead."

Qiao Muyi and Dong Chengling were already prepared to answer Ren Suo's questions. For example, they would tell him they were on a plane, that their peculiar situation was due to Dong Chengling's Awakening issue, and that the Tactical Bureau was involved because Dong Chengling's Awakening Ability was too important...

"I need to pee," Ren Suo said seriously. "I woke up because I was holding it in."
