Chapter 151 The Immortal Palace
"Zhao Zili, wait!"
No sooner had the pretty girl spoken than she was met with a blast from the Gatling gun.
"A welcoming gift. You're welcome."
Zhao Zili spoke in a perfectly calm voice but didn't stop moving. He continued forward, sweeping the Endless Mercy Gatling over the cars stopped on the street. Yet, no one retreated; instead, more people surged towards him.
News of Zhao Zili's presence seemed to have spread, as nearby residents and shopkeepers poured out to find him. And Zhao Zili was easy to locate—the KA-KA-KA-KA-KA sound of the Gatling gun, like a giant woodpecker healing the Earth.
Startled by the barrage from Zhao Zili that had just grazed her face, the girl in the Black Body Armor paused for a moment, then immediately took out her phone to check her reflection.
"I just dyed my hair yesterday!"
She stomped her foot, turned, and chased after Zhao Zili. By now, he had reached the sidewalk. With only shops and no tall buildings nearby, he wasn't jumping around and shooting.
But the sidewalk was still crowded, and more people were heading this way from a distance. Cars nearby were even stopping—risking parking violations—hoping to be targeted by the shots. All four lanes were blocked, and the sidewalk across the street was also dangerously crowded. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say the entire city had turned out.
The girl in the Black Body Armor chose this spot to intercept him, hoping the crowd would slow Zhao Zili down. Based on their initial twenty-minute scouting, the Tactical Bureau was certain Zhao Zili had no offensive intentions.
However, since the main road was impassable, Zhao Zili didn't take it.
Instead, Zhao Zili leaped up, Gatling gun in hand, and ran along a wall, loudly chanting:
"Ignite the Heart, Quicken the Blood, Relieve Misery from the Sea of Suffering!..."
"In the name of the Lord of Billion Brilliance, the Eternal Burning Heart, the Monarch of Wind, Rain, and Snow..."
Seeing this, the girl in the Black Body Armor spoke into her walkie-talkie. Then, taking a deep breath, her ponytail, tied up for maneuverability, fluttered slightly.
With a sound like a thunderclap on a clear day, she leaped powerfully, actually following Zhao Zili's path, running along the wall right behind him!
How is she following him?! Ren Suo was astonished. He knew Zhao Zili's "Superhuman Protection" granted him an all-around super enhancement. Wall-running might look simple, but Newton's laws hadn't been repealed, and Zhao Zili was constantly affected by gravity.
Zhao Zili could advance so explosively up the wall because, with each step, he embedded the edges of his shoes slightly into the surface. This created small footholds, providing the friction needed to propel himself forward.
"Only I can master running on walls! Who are you?!" Ren Suo had Zhao Zili shout.
Ren Suo had Zhao Zili stop firing and run to a rooftop. He then had Zhao Zili feign ignorance and question the girl in the Black Body Armor—after all, the real Zhao Zili would have had no knowledge of the Tactical Bureau during his lifetime.
However, while speaking, Zhao Zili couldn't keep firing the Gatling indiscriminately. This was because "Gifting Hope" had an unwritten condition: when spreading divine grace, Zhao Zili had to continuously chant the aforementioned praises. This served to indicate that he was merely a subordinate; the gifts were from his superiors, the three deities. Although his superiors weren't present, their kindness was to be remembered, and so on.
It was unclear what the three deities had encountered previously, but they had set clear restrictions regarding 'faith,' ensuring Zhao Zili understood completely. It seemed they had learned this lesson the hard way.
But now, he'd been firing for twenty-six minutes; that was probably enough.
"I am Si Hesha, from the Baiyun City Tactical Bureau."
Seeing Zhao Zili finally stop, Si Hesha couldn't help but sigh in relief. She ran onto the rooftop, without a flushed face or shortness of breath, "I represent the Mysterious Country's tactical department, and I hope to make contact with you, Mr. Zhao."
"Oh? Is there something you need?"
Zhao Zili tilted his head, then suddenly chanted another line, "Rain Curtain Shelter!" unleashing a barrage of Holy Bullets into a nearby intersection.
"There are many things." Despite finding Zhao Zili's behavior strange, Si Hesha didn't let it bother her. She quickly recited the lines she had been instructed with to delay Zhao Zili. "If possible, we could find a quieter place to discuss this in detail. Mr. Zhao, we truly have no ill intentions."
"I know."
Of course, Ren Suo knew Si Hesha had no ill intentions. If she had, depending on the severity, she might have transformed from a pretty girl into something like Snow White's evil stepmother in cosplay, or perhaps an ugly duckling. In any case, it wouldn't be attractive. It seemed that any game with somewhat distinct character designs followed this pattern—at least during Ren Suo's Jedi Priest trials, he felt that every competitor looked either menacingly plump or repulsively fat, unlike Zhao Zili, whose chubbiness was somewhat endearing.
Si Hesha said excitedly, "Mr. Zhao, I wonder if you have a place to stay currently? If not, we can arrange..."
"No need. I'll be leaving soon."
Zhao Zili glanced over his right shoulder, startling Si Hesha. She quickly said, "That's my colleague. He rushed over after receiving news of you, wanting to... welcome you."
"I understand."
The Blessings Zhao Zili had already received would not disappear. While most of them enhanced the effects of the Sacred Firearms, Ren Suo had also purchased a 50-meter X-Ray Vision hack for Zhao Zili. This naturally enabled him to spot several Black Body Armor units approaching his location.
Si Hesha seemed to have notified other Tactical Bureau members. They scrambled onto nearby rooftops, making themselves visible to Zhao Zili to demonstrate their lack of ill intent.
Ren Suo glanced at the time in the upper-right corner. "But I don't have time now. Perhaps another time... we'll talk. In the name of the Lord of Billion Brilliance..." He had Zhao Zili casually fire a few shots at them.
"Why don't you have time?" Si Hesha asked.
"My return this time is limited; I'm only here to spread the blessings and declare the stance of the deities." This wasn't information that needed to be concealed, so Ren Suo had Zhao Zili state it plainly. "Once the mission is complete, I naturally have to return."
"But we—" Si Hesha seemed about to say something, but then her earpiece apparently relayed a command from her superiors. She immediately asked, "Mr. Zhao Zili, do you come from the future?"
Ren Suo was momentarily startled but quickly understood the true meaning behind Si Hesha's question; he had prepared an answer long ago.
Zhao Zili said expressionlessly, "It's not what you think. The reason I could win in the trials wasn't because I had experienced them before, but because I already knew the answers beforehand."
Adopting the persona of someone from the future was not to be taken lightly, as it was bound to fall apart—even Ren Suo could only guess at the future through parts of certain games. However, Zhao Zili's performance in the trial had been too impressive, so Ren Suo decided to let him use the cover story he had prepared.
Zhao Zili mouthed something. Just then, the thirty-minute mark was reached. Before the eyes of all the onlookers and Black Body Armor units, Zhao Zili, the chubby man in white robes, swiftly dissolved into light and vanished from the rooftop.
Si Hesha sighed. While directing the other Black Body Armor units to collect any usable clues from where Zhao Zili had disappeared, she turned her head to quietly report to her superiors.
"...Besides those words, he mouthed something at the end, two syllables. When I get back, I'll extract the footage from the action camera on my armor and have the logistics department analyze his lip movements."
"But from my initial observation, if I'm not mistaken, he seemed to be saying... two syllables. The first sounded somewhat like 'sh' followed by 'yen', and the second like 'g' followed by 'ong'."
