Chapter 127 Dark Current
"Where elites gather, the land is spiritual; where the land is spiritual, elites gather. They complement each other... This Spirit Vein location is quite troublesome. Do you need us to take you back later?"
Under New York's afternoon sun, a convoy of three bulletproof cars, flanked by police escorts, created a grand spectacle as it moved through the heart of the city.
In the centermost vehicle, the driver was Li Wei, a young diplomat from the Mysterious Country stationed in the Federation and holding the post of First Secretary. To achieve such a position at his age and serve as a diplomat for the Federation, he must have endured several years of hardship in the war-torn regions of Africa or the Middle East, regardless of his background, before finally finding success.
Although Li Wei kept his eyes fixed forward, he occasionally glanced in the rearview mirror at the small Golden Silk Monkey sitting in the back seat.
The Golden Silk Monkey, nearly the size of a human baby and appearing to be at most a few years old, was curled up quietly. It gently shook its head in response to Li Wei's question.
Li Wei's expression remained unchanged; he had anticipated this answer.
In the three instances where the Mysterious Country assisted with the Spiritual Vein Ignition Ceremony, all the small animals that had used the ceremony's merit to achieve Shape-shifting, except for the Pangolin, had vanished without a trace.
It seems the Pangolin's experience warned the other animals to be cautious, Li Wei mused. Or perhaps the Palace Nine-Tailed Fox descended to the mortal world specifically to provide the other animals with a means of escape...
Li Wei's train of thought didn't last long. With the Federal Government's guidance, the journey from the New York Consulate to the port was smooth, with green lights all the way. They quickly arrived at the Port of New York.
By then, New York Harbor had been cleared of all cargo ships and cruise liners, leaving only one warship waiting. Li Wei and his colleagues disembarked with the Golden Silk Monkey in tow. The monkey was seated in a wheelchair, and they pushed it towards the warship, creating an extremely comical scene.
However, everyone remained serious. Li Wei and the other diplomats, having received permission, were monitored by Federal soldiers as they pushed the Golden Silk Monkey aboard the newly commissioned Little Rock, a Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship.
On the surrounding roads and sidewalks, many Federal citizens watched the port fervently. Some held signs, and Ren Suo could barely make out lettering from the screens that seemed to refer to the "Fairy Palace"—indicating that word of the Fairy Palace had officially spread from Britain and the Mysterious Country to the rest of the world.
Now, Devouring the Spirit of the World was about to activate the sixth World Spiritual Repository: the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island, New York City, Pacific Federation!
Earlier, Li Wei had used the saying, "Where elites gather, the land is spiritual; where the land is spiritual, elites gather," to test the Golden Silk Monkey, merely hoping to confirm the Mysterious Country's internal research findings.
Even I can discern the pattern of Spirit Vein locations by now, Ren Suo thought. So how could national organizations not?
After concluding the Flourishing Sakura incident, the Nine-Tailed Fox had used its "Illusion" ability to transform into a porcupine and then a husky. Disguised as a Fairy Palace beast, it initiated the Spirit Treasuries in Brazil and Australia.
Yet, the locations of these two Spirit Treasuries had no connection to the countries' capitals. Brazil's Spirit Treasury was on Rio de Janeiro's Mount Corcovado, and Australia's was the Sydney Opera House. This was in stark contrast to the Mysterious Country, Britain, and Flourishing Sakura, whose Spirit Treasuries were in Sky Capital, London, and Tokyo respectively—all national capitals.
The Spirit Treasury locations observed so far were Sky Capital in the Mysterious Country, London in Britain, Tokyo in Flourishing Sakura, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and Sydney in Australia. Some of these cities were capitals, while others were not. However, they all shared one prominent feature: in their respective countries, and even on their entire continental plates, these cities had the highest population density and foot traffic.
Thus, Spirit Veins appear in areas with the densest population flow, Ren Suo concluded. It just so happens that for the Mysterious Country, Britain, and Flourishing Sakura, their most densely populated cities are also their capitals. However, this isn't the case for Brazil and Australia, which is why their Spirit Treasury locations are different.
The Pacific Federation's capital was Washington. However, its most developed city, with the largest population and highest foot traffic, was New York on the East Coast. Therefore, when the Pangolin received notice from Old Zhao, Ren Suo immediately directed the Nine-Tailed Fox to rush to New York. Scouting the area, it effortlessly discovered that the Statue of Liberty was indeed the Federation's Spirit Vein.
It's worth noting that when the Nine-Tailed Fox arrived at the Statue of Liberty, Federal personnel had already sealed off the monument. Many Federal Cultivators and Awakeners were circling it, conducting scans and searches to ascertain its extraordinary nature.
No one was a fool. The locations of Spirit Veins ignited by the Fairy Palace couldn't be hidden. With a little deduction, everyone could figure out the Spirit Vein locations within their own territories.
But what could they do even after figuring it out? To activate a Spirit Vein "prematurely," they still had to obediently offer national treasures to the Fairy Palace beasts as a "consecration" fee.
Although the Spirit Veins would activate naturally in a few days anyway, starting them a few days earlier... well, that would greatly benefit the entire population. Definitely not a loss!
Of course, most importantly, it was of great benefit to Devouring the Spirit of the World.
Although the Pacific Federation was young, it had a sizable population. The Spiritual Objects they supplied were considerable in both quantity and quality. The Declaration of Independence alone added two Evolve quotas to Devouring the Spirit of the World, while other ancient artifacts contributed an additional ten!
Moreover, the Federation's Spirit Treasury also required five days to unlock, involving five major openings. This ranked it just after the Mysterious Country's and made it stronger than those of Brazil, Australia, Flourishing Sakura, and Britain.
After the Federation's Spirit Treasury opened, only three or four days would remain until all Spirit Treasuries activated automatically. At that time, the World's Strongest would receive a significant boost.
In other words, if I want to clear this, Ren Suo thought, I'll have to use Immortal Legacy after this Spirit Treasury opens. I need to transform my current 'Illusion Charm' build into a 'Combat' build and see if I can push my combat power beyond the World's Strongest!
Upon reaching Liberty Island, Li Wei and the others personally brought the Golden Silk Monkey close to the Statue of Liberty. They then settled in the island's controlled area to await the end of the Spiritual Vein Ignition Ceremony.
Twelve hours later, at dawn, red and blue auroras spread across the sky above the Statue of Liberty. The crowd gathered in the Port of New York erupted into a clamor, and the entire coast lit up with various glows, as bright as day.
At that moment, Ren Suo discovered a small problem: the Nine-Tailed Fox had nowhere to hide.
Like other Spirit Treasuries, the Federal Spiritual Repository would enter a 12-hour resting period after each opening. During this time, an 'aura' that Devouring the Spirit of the World could not linger within would surround the treasury. Just as the Pangolin had to slip away after each opening in the Mysterious Country, the Nine-Tailed Fox naturally had to do the same in the Federation.
However, the Statue of Liberty was not on the mainland. It stood on Liberty Island, just off the coast of New York Harbor, where all ships entered under its watchful gaze. The island itself was very small, its longest dimension barely 500 meters.
Ren Suo directed the Nine-Tailed Fox to turn invisible and move to the road at the island's northeasternmost point. Only then did it barely escape the Spiritual Energy aura of the Statue of Liberty, an aura that continuously drained the health of Devouring the Spirit of the World.
Ren Suo had considered fast-forwarding 12 hours. However, he then saw on the screen that a warship was anchored not far away, between Liberty Island and Ellis Island.
Huh? Ren Suo wondered. I remember there was already one warship at the port. Why is there another one now? The Pacific Federation is being overly cautious. Could someone really sail across the ocean, enter Upper New York Bay, and disrupt the Spiritual Vein Ignition Ceremony?
Almost instinctively, Ren Suo had the Nine-Tailed Fox activate "Spiritual Vision" to check for any Transcendents on the warship. The moment Spiritual Vision activated, the darkened screen erupted with a star-like brilliance!
On the warship's deck stood a Cultivator so powerful that his presence rivaled 'Spiritual Objects containing abundant Spiritual Energy'!
Concentrating her focus, the Nine-Tailed Fox observed the man on deck. He was middle-aged, with a fierce appearance and a scar-covered face, looking like a serial killer.
Yet, neither the National Land Survey Commissioner Ren Suo had seen in London nor the Cultivators he encountered in Flourishing Sakura could match this man in the brightness of their Spiritual Energy!
Although Ren Suo lacked experience in estimating strength through 'Spiritual Light,' this person's aura far exceeded normal ranges.
Even if he isn't one of the 'World's Strongest,' he probably isn't far off! Ren Suo surmised.
Why would such a powerful individual not remain safeguarding his country? Why come all the way to Liberty Island, only to stay on a warship, as if hiding?
Ren Suo's eyes shifted slightly. He directed the Nine-Tailed Fox to a higher vantage point, enduring the health-draining effect, to survey the entirety of Liberty Island.
As expected—the Nine-Tailed Fox saw that three warships now encircled Liberty Island.
I need to keep a card up my sleeve... Ren Suo mused.
After pondering for a moment, Ren Suo had the Nine-Tailed Fox revert to its True Form—the Little Nine-Tailed Fox. It then cast Illusions, digging itself a hole in the night...
