Middle Life Crisis

Chapter 3: Rising Above the Devils

Aaron Vale's second year in Kindergarten started much like the first. At just five years old, he remained a wiry, slightly shy boy with a mop of silky, hair that always seemed to have a life of its own. Despite his timid demeanor, there was a sharpness behind his dark eye a spark that hinted at the cleverness within.

The Devils' Reign Continues

Section B had earned its infamous nickname, the "Devils' Den," thanks to its resident tormentors. At the helm was Varis Darkwood, a boy with a cruel grin and an unrelenting need to dominate. His cohorts, Darian Kade and Ronan Blackthorn, were equally notorious for their mischief. Together, they made Section B a living nightmare for their classmates, especially the quiet ones.

Aaron had managed to keep a low profile during his first year, but as the second year rolled in, the bullies grew bolder. Varis and his gang had developed a new game: blaming their antics on innocent students. Finn Carver, Lucas Veyne, and Dorian Kade fellow victims were frequent targets. But this year, they turned their attention to Aaron.

The Plan Begins

Aaron spent the next few days quietly observing Varis and his friends. He noticed their patterns—their favorite hiding spots, the way they coordinated their schemes. He even spoke to Finn, Lucas, and Dorian, convincing them to help him set a trap.

"Why should we trust you?" Lucas asked skeptically.

"Because I want what you want," Aaron replied, his voice steady. "To stop them. And I know how."

The Trap

One rainy afternoon, Aaron's plan was set into motion. During recess, Finn, Lucas, and Dorian intentionally provoked the bullies, pretending to be easy targets. Varis, Darian, and Ronan quickly took the bait, cornering them near the storage room.

Unbeknownst to the bullies, Aaron had replaced the bucket of red paint with a bucket of water just above the doorframe. As soon as the gang stepped inside, he signaled Finn to pull a string. The bucket tipped, soaking the trio from head to toe.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Miss Thorn's voice boomed as she appeared, alerted by the commotion.

Aaron stepped forward, holding a small tape recorder he had borrowed from the janitor. "Miss Thorn, I think you'll want to hear this." He played back a recording of Varis boasting about how they'd frame Aaron again.

Justice Served

Miss Thorn's face turned crimson with anger—not at Aaron, but at the bullies. "Varis Darkwood, Darian Kade, Ronan Blackthorn, you will stay after class. And I'll be speaking to your parents."

Aaron watched as the bullies were led away, their heads hanging low. A small, satisfied smile played on his lips.

The Appeal to Miss Crowley

Despite his victory, Aaron knew his troubles weren't over. Section B's reputation would haunt him for years unless he could find a way out. That's when he decided to approach Miss Crowley, the esteemed class teacher of 1st Standard, Section A.

He caught her during her free period and hesitated for a moment before speaking.

"Aaron, may I help you with something?" Miss Crowley's gentle voice cut through the silence.

"I… I don't think I belong in Section B," he began. "I want to learn, but it's hard with all the troublemakers. I want a chance to be in Section A. I'll work hard, I promise."

Miss Crowley's gaze softened. "Aaron, I've noticed you've been quiet and diligent these last few days. But transferring classes isn't just about wanting it; it's about showing you're ready for the change. Have you been talking to Miss Thorn about this?"

Aaron nodded eagerly. "I have. I want to prove I can do better, to prove that I can be a good student."

Miss Crowley leaned forward, her eyes thoughtful. "It's not easy to transfer classes, Aaron. But I admire your determination. Let me see what I can do. It might take some time, and it's not guaranteed, but if you're serious about this, I want to help."

Aaron's face lit up with hope. "Thank you, Miss Crowley. I'll do whatever it takes. I just want a chance to learn without all the distractions."

Miss Crowley smiled gently. "I appreciate that. Keep doing what you're doing, Aaron. Show me that you're ready, and we'll see what we can arrange."

A Dramatic Finish

As the term ended, the entire kindergarten gathered in the main hall for the annual reshuffling announcement. Aaron held his breath as the principal read out the new class lists for 1st Standard.

"Section A… Aaron Vale."

The room erupted in whispers. Aaron couldn't help but grin as he glanced at Miss Crowley, who gave him a subtle nod. He had done it escaped the Devils' Den and secured a brighter future.

Little did he know, this was just the beginning of his journey.
