Chapter 15: Clash of Ice and Strategy
The sun hung high in the pale winter sky, its rays streaming through scattered clouds. It was just past ten in the morning, and the abandoned Beta training ground gleamed under the sunlight. The ghostly city, designed for combat scenarios, stood silent. Its cracked pavements and empty buildings bore the weight of countless battles fought by aspiring heroes.
Through the deserted streets, a soft breeze whispered, carrying with it the scent of dust and decay. One building, in particular, stood at the edge of the square, its façade marked with battle scars. Inside, sunlight slipped through the cracks of boarded-up windows, casting streaks of gold across the dusty floors and cracked walls. The silence was broken only by the soft shuffle of footsteps as Trafalgar Law entered, his stride calm and measured.
Behind him, Yaoyorozu Momo followed closely, her expression unreadable as the faint sound of her boots echoed in the quiet hall. The air between them was calm, almost serene, as they navigated the narrow corridors.
Momo's voice broke the silence, soft but inquisitive. "Logically, you're capable of encompassing this entire building within your ability's range, aren't you?"
Law, without breaking his stride, answered in a neutral tone, his back still turned to her. The sunlight filtering through the gaps in the walls highlighted his black-and-white beanie adorned with its familiar spotted pattern. "Yes, that's correct."
She nodded, her gaze briefly flickering to his long sword resting against his hip as she spoke again, her tone thoughtful. "Our objective is to either retrieve the rocket or apprehend the villains. So… can't you just transport the rocket here?"
Law's gray eyes remained calm as he glanced sideways, his voice carrying a hint of amusement. "I could, if I knew where the rocket was. Unfortunately, I can't transport what I can't locate."
Momo exhaled lightly and straightened her posture. "In that case, we have no choice but to face them head-on."
A smirk tugged at the corner of Law's lips as he turned his gaze back to the path ahead. "Where did your confidence go? You seemed optimistic before our opponents were revealed."
Momo looked down, her steps faltering for a moment. "I didn't expect Todoroki-kun to be our opponent. Facing the son of the Number Two hero never crossed my mind. And his ally, Kaminari Denki, is always smiling and laughing, which suggests he has some extraordinary ability to back up that confidence."
Law stopped abruptly and turned slightly, reaching out to flick her forehead with his finger. Momo stumbled back a step, her expression startled as she blinked up at him.
"You're overthinking," Law said casually, his voice light but firm. "Overthinking will only paralyze you."
He resumed walking without looking back. "Besides, he's the son of the Number Two hero, not the Number One. That means someone's already surpassed his father. So what's stopping us from surpassing the son?"
Momo blinked, then a soft laugh escaped her lips. She looked up, her face brighter. "You're right. Sorry for making you worry."
Before Law could reply, a sharp, crackling sound echoed through the building. It was faint at first, but quickly grew louder, spreading like an approaching storm. Both Momo and Law turned their heads simultaneously, their eyes narrowing as they saw frost spreading across the walls and ceiling, creeping like a living organism.
The temperature dropped sharply, their breath misting in the air. From around a corner at the end of the hallway, Todoroki Shoto stepped into view. His left side glowed faintly with icy mist, a chill emanating from him that seemed to freeze the very air. His expression was cold, his heterochromatic eyes piercing as he placed a hand on the wall beside him.
"Well, heroes," Todoroki said, his voice calm but laced with menace. "Why don't we finish this fight in an instant?"
As he spoke, the frost burst forth with incredible speed, consuming everything in its path. The walls, floor, and ceiling transformed into a glacial expanse, ice racing toward Law and Momo. The sheer force of the attack was overwhelming, the temperature plunging further as the air seemed to crackle with frozen energy.
Momo's eyes widened, fear flashing across her face as the icy wave surged closer. But beside her, Law remained unfazed. His hand rose steadily, palm open, as he uttered a single word with an air of authority.
"Room."
A glowing blue sphere expanded outward from his hand, encompassing the hallway just as the ice reached their position. The energy rippled, creating a boundary that clashed with the oncoming frost. The ice crept up Law's legs, its chill biting, but his expression didn't waver. Instead, he reached out and grabbed Momo's wrist.
"Shambles."
In an instant, their positions shifted. Momo and Law disappeared from the encroaching frost, reappearing in the spot where Todoroki had been standing moments before. Meanwhile, Todoroki found himself trapped in his own ice, his body encased up to his chest.
Todoroki's eyes widened in surprise, his head snapping toward them as he realized what had happened. Momo, equally stunned, stared at Law, who stood calmly beside her, his trademark smirk on his lips.
"Take it easy," Law said, his tone light but mocking as his gray eyes met Todoroki's. "The game won't be any fun if you try to end it so quickly."
The scene was breathtaking. The hallway was a frozen labyrinth, the walls and ceiling gleaming with icy tendrils that sparkled in the morning light. Todoroki stood immobilized, his breath misting as he struggled against the frost binding him. Momo, still processing the events, looked at Law with newfound awe, her fear replaced by a flicker of admiration.
Law tilted his head, his smile widening as he turned his attention back to Todoroki. "So, what's your next move?"
