Chapter 27: Jiro
The pounding in my head was a relentless drum solo, each beat a fresh wave of agony. I groaned, burying my face deeper into the unfamiliar pillow. The air was thick with the lingering scent of stale beer and cheap pizza, a cruel reminder of the madness that was last night's party. I pushed myself up, wincing at the sudden movement, and that's when I noticed it.
My hand instinctively went to the top of my head. My fingers traced the delicate curves, the unnatural points sticking up through my already messy purple hair. Cat ears. Actual cat ears. I scrambled to the bathroom, my heart hammering against my ribs. The mirror confirmed my worst fears. Two perfectly formed, pinkish-grey ears sat where my normal ones should have been like an odd headdress. I twisted to look behind me, my breath hitching at the sight of a matching tail, still human looking, no actual fur, but a delicate greyish pink appendage. I could move it, feel it, it was real.
My mind flashed back to last night. It was hazy, filled with laughter, dancing, and… Kaminari. The memory of us tangled together, bodies slick with sweat and alcohol, sent a fresh wave of heat rushing through me. It was… intense. And incredibly stupid. Now, I was paying the price. Not just with a hangover from hell. But with… this.
Panic seized me. I grabbed my phone, a desperate need to escape this situation overwhelming me. I bolted from Mina's guest room, each step a jolt of pain through my skull. It was a miracle I didn't fall down the stairs. Outside, the early morning sun was brutal and I ran home as quickly as my new appendage allowed.
Thankfully, my parents were out of the picture this month, working on some overseas business deal. I'd never been so grateful for their constant absence. I locked the door, leaning against it, my mind racing. What had happened? How? And more importantly… what was I going to do?
I started pacing, the tail swishing nervously behind me. This was insane. I chewed on my lip, the only logical course of action pushing through the panic. I needed help. I needed Momo. She was always the sensible one, the voice of reason in my chaotic life. Plus… well, she was Momo. I fumbled with my phone, my fingers shaking as I typed out a frantic message.
She arrived like a superhero, her elegant form a stark contrast to my current mess. Her calm demeanor was instantly grounding. I spilled everything, the words tumbling out in a rush. The party, the alcohol, Kaminari, the… changes. She listened with quiet intensity, her dark eyes widening as I described the cat ears and tail.
"This is… quite unusual, Jiro," she said finally, her voice soft.
"Unusual? Momo, I look like a rejected anime character!" I exclaimed, gesturing to my head.
Hours passed. We brainstormed, speculated, googled "sudden cat-like transformations" until my fingers ached. We came up with absolutely nothing. Maybe it was something we drank? Some experimental quirk activating? We were grasping at straws.
"Maybe… maybe we should talk to the Bakusquad?" Momo suggested hesitantly. "They were at the party too, perhaps they noticed something."
I cringed at the thought. Bakugo seeing me like this? Mortifying. But Momo was right. We needed answers, no matter how embarrassing. Reluctantly, I nodded and picked up my phone. Texting Bakugo felt like walking into a lion's den.
'Hey Bakugo, weird question but did anything…unusual happen to you last night?' I typed, hitting send before I could chicken out.
The reply came a minute later, short and blunt as always. 'Fucking yes, I'm a wolf. Kirishima's a fox. What the hell is going on?!'
I stared at the screen, dumbfounded. A wolf? A fox? I wasn't the only one turned into a zoo animal? My mouth went dry. I looked at Momo, my eyes wide. "He said," I managed to whisper, "He said he's a wolf. And Kirishima's a fox."
The words hung in the air, heavy with disbelief. This wasn't just me. This wasn't just a drunken side-effect or some weird, niche quirk suddenly manifesting. We were in something else far more bizarre. The questions were multiplying and the answers... they seemed impossibly far away. This was just the beginning, I could feel it. And the fear, for some reason, was mixed with a strange, trembling sort of excitement.
