Merchant Of Yliaster

Chapter 83: Delicious

Felix sniffed the air, smelling a faint trace of cooked meat in the distance. He was not sure why Maxwell left him here, but he could still feel that he was connected to him, so it was fine, he supposed. This place had a lot to eat after all.

He strolled around the camp where humans were building things around him, like they needed more than the ground to sleep on. Felix never understood the human obsession with enclosed spaces in his short life. Wasn't being exposed to nature better?

His theory was immediately proven as he spotted a bird flying through the air, not aware of whose territory it was trespassing into.

Felix quickly grabbed the bird from the air, a mass of tentacles shooting out of his mouth with immense speed, before returning with the struggling bird. The taste was a bit weird, but it would do to satisfy his hunger for a couple of minutes.

Ever since he was connected to Maxwell, Felix found that he was getting hungry more and more frequently. He even got bigger in the recent hours, looking a bit more like his mother's form.

He knew instinctively that his mother was not a simple dog, and much more. Before his mind was opened by the connection with Maxwell, Felix could remember seeing the greatness of his mother, but being completely unaware of it.

He could also feel that he could become anything he imagined, as his mother also explained to him that when he heard her speak in his mind recently, but Felix found it quite needless. What form would be better than a dog?

He quickly forgot about all those, though, as he could smell the cooked meat getting closer. He sped up, moving towards a fire where Blueberry's newest human pet was making dinner.

Felix really liked Blueberry. The bird could properly communicate for once, and she seemed very strong for a bird. Not for a moment did Felix associate Blueberry with the species he had eaten just minutes before.

She also seemed really good at making humans do things, and soon, Felix had a big piece of steak before him. He waited for Blueberry's pet to turn his back on him before he quickly ate the steak. He didn't like how people reacted when he did that when they could see him, so he moved more carefully.

As he was savoring the heavenly taste, he suddenly felt a familiar presence; his tail immediately started wagging without his input. A big wave of energy flowed into him and Blueberry, and he could feel a lot of information appearing inside his mind. The energy was distinct, and it was obvious that it came from his Maxwell.

He could see in his mind that Maxwell was walking towards one of the weird enclosed spaces humans had. He was a bit confused about why he sent this to them, though, so he turned to Blueberry, waiting for her to explain the meaning behind the message. She was definitely better at this thinking thing than he was.

Blueberry was one of the few people who could speak to him in the way his mother used, along with that woman who gave him tasty treats and Maxwell. Felix was not sure why others didn't know how to communicate, but he didn't care.

Soon, he felt a message from Blueberry. "Chirp!" the bird sent him. Felix found that the bird's messages for some reason always included that chirping sound. He still understood that Maxwell sent the message so that they could follow him, though.

Blueberry jumped from his perch, and Felix was confused when she slammed into him. To his surprise, though, there was no impact, and he could immediately feel the bird inside his mind. He felt that he could push the bird out, but he had no reason to do that.

He felt a question appear in his mind, the bird communicating with him directly from his mind. She apparently wanted to use his body to do something, so she could bring him with her? He didn't know how she could do that, but as long as he could follow Maxwell, everything was good.

He relaxed his control over his body. Doing this was strangely easy, as his body was not really tied to a simple form. He simply retracted himself to his real body and watched his body slowly lose its form before suddenly stabilizing.

There was a moment when Blueberry couldn't understand how the body worked, and the mass of green matter formed some gruesome-looking shapes before it stabilized back into being a dog. Felix felt a feeling of respect coming from the bird, as she understood that he was keeping his body in the same shape by concentrating on it all the time.

Soon, they walked outside the camp, Blueberry radiating a presence that made the people unlikely to notice them. The bird was really resourceful when it came to mind magic.

When they were out of the camp, Felix felt his body once more change in shape, as the bird used his ability with pretty good efficiency. She was used to making herself ethereal and physical, so it could be said that she was familiar with this type of skill in a way.

His body wriggled and twisted for a moment before it started to condense, Blueberry's will straining with effort as she tried to shape Felix's otherworldly body. Soon, the mass started to take shape and roughly gained the shape of a bird.

After a few seconds, details started to appear, and Blueberry herself was soon standing on the ground. She looked around dazedly for a moment before opening her wings hesitantly. It turned out there was no need for hesitation, though, as immediately after flapping them, she was in the air, flying like this was her own body.

Felix, who could feel the whole process, was truly amazed. While he still thought dogs were superior to anything else, he definitely appreciated Blueberry's ability to fly. Maybe he could do something like this in the future? Maybe he could even add those flapping things to his own body, making it fly?

He almost reasserted himself in the body in his excitement, and his body wriggled out of shape for a moment in the air before Blueberry hastily shaped it back to being her. Felix felt a wave of anger rise from the bird, and whined mentally. He definitely didn't like having an angry presence in his mind, he decided.

They flew to the location Maxwell sent them, and Bluberry perched on a branch when they could see the weird structure in the forest in the distance. Felix could smell many presences around the place, and he was not sure if they were enemies or not. He was surprised that he could smell the world without a nose, but the smells were delicious, like the enemy he had eaten with the food woman. He really hoped that they were enemies.

Blueberry, though, seemed to think they were not, as she started to fly towards the rift at a low altitude while she once again radiated the presence that would make people ignore her. She was a bit unsure if the skill would work, but she made her body ethereal to improve the effect, as her ethereal form was harder to see.

Soon, they reached the wall without problems, and Bluberry directly phased through it, not wasting time. She could feel that the wall was filled with some powerful material, but it did almost nothing to prevent Blueberry's mental energy form. Humans were pretty dumb, so Blueberry figured they would need some time until they created something that could block her.

When they emerged from the other side of the wall, they could immediately see the fissure in reality and the desert behind it.

Blueberry knew about the rifts thanks to Maxwell, but Felix was quite oblivious about the thing before him. Immediately, he was confused as he couldn't understand what he was seeing.

He immediately panicked, as they were going toward the rift, he couldn't understand the immense speed, and his panic caused him to reassert himself back to his body, this time all the way.

Just before they passed through, one body turned to two, and they entered the rift with immense speed, leaving behind them a very confused guard who couldn't understand if he was hallucinating or not.

The duo, meanwhile, moved in very different patterns. Blueberry, while disoriented, was still a bird, and she could reorient herself in time before she struck the sands.

Felix, though, being a dog and in a panicked state of mind, crashed into a dune in the distance, still in his shapeless state, and caused an avalanche of sand.

Blueberry was alarmed to feel many mental signatures around them, and unfortunately, the dune Felix crash was one of them.

In her senses tens of mental signatures moved towards the dog, and she rushed to him, intending to help.

"Chirp?" She came to a dazed halt a few seconds later, as all mental signatures suddenly disappeared, only leaving Felix behind. She just couldn't understand what happened.

Immediately after, a mass of tentacles pierced through the sand, pulling the sand inwards to the ground before a familiar mass got out of the dune.

Under Blueberry's glances filled with birdly confusion, the mass's shape wriggled back to Felix. The dog looked calm after his bout of anxiety.

Blueberry could even feel a feeling of satisfaction radiating from the dog.

She made a mental shrug, as he couldn't do it like Maxwell with her body, and dived back into Felix's mind. The dog was not very bright, but this proved that he would be a quite safe host for this little adventure.

"Chirp," she said, indicating that they needed to reach his human. She could feel the direction his human was, but it made her a bit confused. The direction was too downward to make sense.

Felix, on the other hand, wasn't very used to thinking in such logical ways. He was also not hungry for the first time since he fused with the weird green goo, and this made him feel even less motivated to use his mind.

Immediately after receiving Blueberry's message, the dog acted. His form once again lost its solidity, and as a mass, he slowly sank to the ground, consuming the sand like it was a side dish.

Blueberry gave another mental shrug after seeing the scene through the eyes, or rather, whatever the animal used to see. At this point, Blueberry was starting to think that Felix sensed the environment like this just because he thought this was the norm.

With that, their journey towards Maxwell's location began, the ecosystem of this desert being completely oblivious to the damage it would receive soon due to the abomination literally eating his way through it.
