Mated To The Pack’s Doom

Chapter 20: 20

Arielle

As I got to my quarters, a smile danced on my lips as I tucked myself in. Damien's kindness was in repeat in my head, and I still couldn't believe it. It was almost as if he was a different person…

Or maybe it was the true person he was.

It was like I had spoken to the real Damien on the roof. He had succeeded in calming my nerves and making me relax…

Sleep which had become a problem ever since the incident with those male workers, was now easy. The moment I hit the bed; I slept off instantly.

As a result, I got up early. There was still some time till dawn, but I couldn't get any more sleep. I felt recharged and all I wanted was to get my task done for the day and slip back to the roof to meet him.

"Oh, Arielle…" I mumbled as I wrapped my arms around my chest.

I could still feel his eyes on me. His long lashes, his hair, and his rough jawline… It was an experience I wouldn't forget for a long time.

"Focus!" I told myself as I quickly made my bed and began to prepare for the day.

I quickly ate the cookies and drank the milk from the food basket the night before. When I was done, I hid the basket in the opening in my ceiling and dusted my gown before moving to stand by the window.

A sudden noise snapped my eyes away from the window as the door cracked open.

Bailey barged in a second later with a cold bucket of water and her henchmen.

"Hello, Bailey." I greeted her with a large smile.

Her eyes narrowed and the bucket of water that was already going to my bed froze halfway. Then slowly, she handed the bucket of water to one of the men and looked around the room in search of something else.

"You seem very happy; did you steal jewelry from the store?" Bailey questioned. Her eyes went to the small wardrobe, before returning to glare at me.

"I rested well last night. I'm fit for work today, are we working in the stables?" I asked instead.

My eagerness was fuel to her irritation. She grunted and spat on the floor. "No, you aren't working in the stables. Something came up, you will be heading to the eastern village for humanitarian work."

This was unexpected but I had the right to be asked if I was going that far away. "Why? What happened?"

"The kingdom is under attack wench! It would do the soldiers a great deal if you went there to treat them. At least you can be of some help to the villagers." A small grin formed at the corner of her lips.

This was a ploy to bring harm to me. I didn't have to go there; I could just treat them here.

"Of course, our Alpha Damien is already working hard to help fight back the forces. You will see our soldier's health when you get there."

When she mentioned Damien, I felt an excitement brew inside me. I smiled brightly again and bowed my head.

"It shall be done," I noted.

I carried my essentials with a few changes of clothes and joined the delegation of maids going to the eastern village.

On the way, I couldn't help but notice that people moved in the opposite direction. There was fire and smoke on each side of the road. The fighting was very intense, it made me worry for Damien's life.

After last night's conversation, I didn't want anything to happen to him. Not like I was crazy for him, I just hoped he was fine.

The transport jerked to a stop at the Eastern village, and we slowly got down. The soldiers in charge of escorting us stood before us and recited our "Dos and Not Dos."

"Always stay within your group, it's still a battlefield out there. Always stay with your partner, even if you want to crap. If you get kidnapped, we won't put any effort into recovering you."

My eyes danced around, staring at the damaged and burned buildings.

"Are we clear?" The officer in charge bellowed.

"Yes sir!" The maids answered in unison.

We were led to the Red Cross society at the village's center close to the battlefield. We got to a large hall where the injured and sick were being taken care of.

I quickly got to work with some severely bruised children, and I applied ointment to their injuries.

The hall's large door suddenly went wide open and there was a hushed silence as Damien and his men walked into the hall.

I stood up and caught his eyes. He looked at me momentarily before ignoring me and walking past me with his men.

I was slightly hurt by this, but I understood.

He must be going through a lot, especially leading an elite group here. Maybe I was too eager to talk to him, I would meet him later, I thought to myself with a knowing smile.

He didn't stay long and went out with his men. The shouting and destruction had gotten closer, but I couldn't help but get nervous as I cleaned their wounds.

One of the children I treated grabbed my arm and trembled.

"I'm scared, they are outside, aren't they?" He asked fearfully.

I looked around and forced a smile on my face. "Don't worry, we have the strongest man with us. The alpha will save us and send the rogues back to hell," I assured him. "Come, let me give you a hug." I opened my arms, and he accepted my embrace.

Shouts of cheers and celebration suddenly reverberated outside, and I smiled. We had won.

We were taken back to the pack after we were done, and I started looking for Damien. An idea came to my head to check the rooftop which I did, but it was empty.

Yet I decided to wait.

I dozed into sleep as I waited but I woke up not long after, with warm blankets around my shoulders and a pillow under my head.

I rubbed my eyes and looked around. "Damien?" But he wasn't there…

I knew the type of hope I was having for Damien was dangerous. He was a double-edged knife that could also cut me in the process, he was just like the others.

Yet after being through so much pain, this was the closest I had come to feeling… wanted or even loved… At the back of my mind, I feared this might have all been delusional thoughts and Damien could never feel this way towards me but…

—A girl could only hope, right?
