Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Stop Being an Onii-chan!
After containing Kamishiro Rize, the ghoul, Haruto was in a great mood.
The system rewards were secondary, the real excitement came from the immense research value of ghouls.
These humanoid creatures bore an extremely high resemblance to humans.
However, their bodies were impervious to ordinary weapons; regular bullets could hardly harm them.
They also possessed extraordinary regenerative abilities; for high-level ghouls, regrowing severed limbs was as quick as a blink of an eye.
Not to mention, their kagune provided exceptional combat capabilities. If these traits could be replicated through experimentation and applied to the human body…
Then, the Foundation's armed forces and medical advancements would skyrocket to an entirely new level. The kind that would put them a full century ahead of the rest of the world. If ghoul traits could be replicated, forming a Mobile Task Force would become a reality.
That way, Haruto's work would be much easier.
At the very least, containment of objects below Level Three would no longer require his personal intervention.
As he thought about this, a hopeful smile appeared on Haruto's face.
But soon, he shook his head again.
"The Foundation still lacks enough research personnel. I need to hurry up and tric-, recruit more talents."
Muttering to himself, Haruto prepared to leave the crime scene and head back to his apartment. However, after taking just a few steps, he felt that something was off.
He turned around.
In an otherwise empty space, the dust in the air scattered on its own. Although the dust particles were tiny and difficult to see without strong light or tools, Haruto could perceive them clearly.
Seeing this, he raised an eyebrow.
"Nao, why are you sneaking around again?"
In the supposedly empty space, a silver-haired girl gradually revealed herself. She had already changed into a casual, youthful outfit; a white blouse paired with a pleated skirt.
Gone was the frail appearance she had when they first met. Now, Tomori Nao exuded an aura of youthful charm.
Sticking out her tongue, she chuckled.
"Hehe, you caught me again. My ability works fine, but you always manage to see through it."
Haruto shook his head helplessly.
Tomori Nao frequently traveled between the Foundation and the apartment. With her sharp mind and Haruto backing her up, she had adapted well within the Foundation. She had probably overheard his phone conversation and tagged along with the armed personnel this time.
Reaching out, he ruffled her silver hair.
He didn't scold her.
Instead, he started pondering her future.
She had demonstrated exceptional skills in reconnaissance and execution. Even if she lost her abilities after puberty, she would still make an outstanding investigator.
Should he officially sign her up?
After thinking for a while, Haruto decided to put that question aside for now.
"I'm heading home."
With that, he signaled Nao to follow him toward the apartment.
The sun had just set.
The distant sky was painted red. Although the last rays of sunlight still lingered, Chiba City was already cloaked in twilight.
Stepping out of the alley, they could see the streetlights flickering on. Pedestrians walked past, chatting and laughing.
No one knew about the horrors that had just unfolded in the alley. No one knew that a man-eating monster had just been contained.
The peaceful night scene was comforting. Haruto stretched lazily, the whole purpose of founding the SCP Foundation was to protect this kind of peaceful daily life.
"What's for dinner?" Nao asked expectantly.
Haruto's cooking skills were top-tier. After a month, he had practically spoiled her taste buds.
"Seems like the fridge is running low on supplies," he mused.
Unlike when he lived alone, he now had two extra girls to feed. Plus, a certain golden-haired freeloader frequently showed up for meals.
Food supplies never lasted long.
"Let's go buy some ingredients. I'll make seafood porridge tonight."
Hearing this, Nao cheered. "Yay!"
With that, they changed course toward a department store in Chiba. As soon as they entered, the snack section was right at the front.
Tomori Nao immediately stopped in her tracks, unable to resist.
Haruto flicked her head lightly. "Cut down on snacks. You're still growing."
Pouting, Nao turned to him, crossed her arms, and puffed out her chest slightly.
"I'm already doing pretty well! Big brother, aren't you being a little greedy?"
Her playful gesture and words immediately drew attention from people nearby.
"Young people these days have no shame!"
"Ah, youth… I'm getting old."
Soft murmurs filled the air.
Haruto's forehead twitched with irritation.
Tomori Nao was great in many ways, but she had no sense of boundaries when it came to gender interactions.
A swift flick landed on her forehead.
"Ow!" she whimpered.
Ignoring her protests, he was about to drag her toward the fresh food section but at that moment, his system panel suddenly popped up:
[An anomaly has been detected nearby. Proceed with containment.]
Haruto frowned.
Another anomaly today?
A map appeared on the system interface.
A red dot marked the anomaly's location, inside the mall.
Haruto looked up.
This was tricky.
The mall was bustling; not at peak hours, but still crowded.
If the anomaly was dangerous and activated here…
It could put many innocent people at risk. And containing it without drawing attention would be difficult.
Haruto decided to check it out first.
Noticing his sudden pause, Nao tilted her head in confusion.
Then, she watched as he casually strolled into the snack aisle.
Even more confused, she followed along.
Picking up a shopping basket, they grabbed a few snacks and walked further inside at a leisurely pace.
Soon, Haruto spotted the targets.
Two girls.
One had black hair and seemed around his age.
The other had long, pinkish-white hair and looked like a middle schooler. They appeared to be sisters.
One of them was the anomaly. Yet, even with Haruto's keen perception, he sensed nothing unusual. Rize was also a humanoid anomaly, but Haruto could feel the bloodthirst and surging power within her.
These two, however, felt completely normal.
