Chapter 26: Chapter 25: Training
The morning sun had just risen when the school grounds became bustling with activity. Today, the senior students were about to begin Erik's special training. This marked their first encounter with the mysterious instructor since their humiliating defeat in the previous practice match. But today was different—there was no gentle approach. Instead, Erik's reprimands were like thunderclaps. Dressed in his gray tracksuit with a whistle in his mouth, he herded the students around the field like a pack of Dobermans, causing chaos.
"John, Pete, Bobby!" he shouted the names of the boys, sending chills down their spines. "Tell me, did you not eat enough breakfast, or did you waste your energy on some unhealthy activities yesterday? I want you to run like men! Run like hunting cheetahs! Faster! Faster!"
Erik swung his arm vigorously, his patience clearly wearing thin.
Given the terrifying threats Erik had made in the past, the boys, feeling as if they had been whipped, immediately picked up their pace.
"Such shameful performance!" Erik's roar echoed across the entire field. "When I was your age, I had already fought monsters in over a hundred battles, risking my life every day. You, however, enjoy the comforts of the academy and are seen as the hope of your people, yet you dare slack off like this? Do you want to repeat your last humiliating failure?"
Erik's shouting filled the air as the boys, exhausted and drenched in sweat, dared not slow down under his piercing gaze.
The girls, who had not yet been shouted at, could feel the panic of the boys. Their faces turned pale, their hearts uneasy, and their fears soon became reality. After reprimanding the boys, Erik turned his gaze to them and issued new orders.
"As for you—according to the training plan devised by me and Assistant Selena, we will be doing some light games. First, follow her for warm-ups to get your bodies moving. After that, I'll make sure your day will be unforgettable."
"Sir—uh, I mean, Mr. Erik..." The older Allison, emboldened by being a girl, raised her hand to ask, "We're mutants, not soldiers. Why do we have to do things like this? Wasn't our previous training good enough?"
"Yes, it was good. But you still failed miserably in front of a group of ordinary people, unable to even put up a fight, even with the instructors around to back you up. If you were to face an enemy on your own, even a small fry could grab your neck and drag you into a corner," Erik retorted sharply, his tone only growing more intense with each word.
"See that wall?" He pointed off into the distance, past layers of trees. A long wall separated the academy from the ordinary world. "That's the world you dream of entering, but it blocks your way. Don't hate it, because it's not just a barrier—it's also your protection. Without it, some of you might not even be alive today."
"You must understand, just because you're mutants doesn't mean you'll be safe. We live in a strange country where every thirty minutes there's a murder, every five minutes a rape, and every fifteen seconds a robbery. Crimes may not happen to you, but when they do, regret will come too late."
"Being a mutant is actually a blessing. Unlike ordinary people, you have natural advantages. Katie can bypass physical obstacles, Allison can generate power using sound waves, Lorna and I can control magnetic fields, and then there's Mary, who defeated a battle-hardened warrior with a surprise move at Akaria Lake. You see, just by properly using your powers, you can protect yourselves far more effectively than any weapon. You've been gifted this power to ensure your safety, but you've wasted it. You live in a small, sheltered world, with no real sense of your own potential. Just swinging a stick or tossing rocks isn't training. You lack imagination and long-term vision. You need to find your own path and follow it unwaveringly. Your body is the temple of your soul. Training your body will refine your character, making you shine like a polished diamond."
"If you want to live like a princess, go to Assistant Selena now. If not, stay here, become a pet that never grows up, and continue to waste your days."
Erik finished speaking and walked away, leaving the girls exchanging glances. This was not the usual Erik. In the past, he had been polite and humorous, never once raising his voice. Today, he was a different person, and both the boys and girls were shaken by his storm-like reprimands.
"I feel like the carefree days are gone," Allison muttered, staring at Erik's retreating back. Her sentiment struck a chord with her friends.
"I'm scared. I don't know what's coming next," Katie, still the shy girl, held Lorna's hand anxiously. She wanted to embrace the new life but was reluctant to let go of her old comfort. She had mixed feelings about the upcoming training. Lorna, who was younger than Katie, appeared more like Katie's older sister. As Magneto's daughter, she had always been curious about Erik, and though she admired him, she wasn't too worried. Instead, she was eager to see what would come next.
Before Lorna could convince Katie to step forward, Mary had already made up her mind and headed toward Selena. As a transfer student who had only recently arrived, Mary hadn't yet experienced the academy's quiet life. Having suffered a lot in the past, she knew the harsh realities of life. Her abilities were also different from the others, and when she saw the light of self-determination shining before her, she was the first to step up.
"Allison, aren't you coming?" Lorna asked as she pulled Katie along, looking back toward Allison.
"Alright, alright, I'm not staying here alone. I don't want to stay stuck in this tiny world. I'm going to look fabulous when I meet my annoying relatives and show them what I'm made of. Don't underestimate me. I'm going to be a big star!" Allison grumbled, trailing behind them.

The sound of the students' intense training reached the main building, waking up Ororo, who had been nursing a hangover.
She was in an incredibly awkward state. On the one hand, she felt embarrassed because of the previous night's events. She had mustered all her courage for her first date, only to ruin it by being too nervous. Not only did she miss her chance to confess, but she also exposed her drunken behavior in front of the guy she liked, making her feel mortified. Now that she was sober, she just wanted to bury her head in the ground and never come out. On the other hand, there was the lingering physical discomfort from a shameful dream, which left her body feeling soft and sweaty, and the sticky sensation between her legs was especially hard for someone as modest as her to accept. Although this had happened before, never had it left such a lasting impression on her body and mind. The combination of mental and physical discomfort made her feel utterly embarrassed.
As if fate hadn't already humiliated her enough, when she was lost in her tangled thoughts, there was a knock at her door. When there was no answer, her roommate, Jean, unlocked the door and entered.
"I shouldn't be here, but are you okay?" Jean asked, noticing Ororo was just about to change out of her wet clothes. The awkward misunderstanding only added to the tension between the two.
Ororo's face flushed red as she hastily tried to cover herself. She was caught in a dilemma—she couldn't exactly ask Jean to leave, but she couldn't just sit there either. Luckily, Jean was her friend, and she did her best to make the situation as comfortable as possible. She handed Ororo a box of tissues and awkwardly tried to avoid looking directly at her.
"Did you go out last night?" Jean asked, diverting her gaze.
"No, I got drunk and don't remember anything," Ororo replied clumsily, feeling like she was being interrogated in court.
Her answer, though embarrassing, eased Jean's worries. Jean wasn't the type to fall for others easily, but she had grown close to Scott over time, though she still held onto her feelings. Ororo's presence made her emotions waver, but now that everything seemed fine, Jean was relieved.
"He's a good guy, isn't he?" Jean asked after Ororo changed and climbed back into bed. The sunlight poured into the room as Jean pulled back the curtains.
"Yeah, he's polite and has great manners," Ororo said, her face still flushed. She couldn't help but smile, praising the guy in question, almost proudly.
But before she could say more, an all-too-familiar voice echoed from outside the window: "Most Brainless Award goes to John! If the academy had that award, I'd definitely give it to you, you fool!"
