Chapter 68: The Obstacle from the Father-in-Law
"What? Are you interested?"
Dr. Lizard spoke with a crazed expression.
"I… No!"
While he was speaking, Peter had already climbed up to the emitter and replaced its contents with the antidote Gwen had created. In an instant, the entire New York sky was shrouded in purple mist.
Snowflake-like purple particles floated down from the sky, landing on Dr. Lizard and gradually stripping away his lizard-like features, revealing his original human form.
"No!"
Dr. Lizard roared in frustration but ultimately collapsed powerlessly to the ground, returning to his normal state.
"It really is him."
Captain Stacy, seeing Connors, muttered to himself.
Although Peter had told him that Connors was Dr. Lizard, it was still hard for him to believe.
Captain Stacy shook his head, then turned around, aiming his shotgun at the Iron Suit.
"Sir, congratulations. You're under arrest for threatening the city's safety. If you don't want that, I suggest you step out of that metal shell."
"What are you saying?"
The Iron Suit, controlled by Little AI, turned its head toward Captain Stacy, and Ned's confused voice came from within.
"No, no, no!"
Peter leaped down and stood between Captain Stacy and the suit, saying, "He's a good guy, Captain."
"A good guy? A good guy wouldn't hide inside a metal shell," Captain Stacy said sternly. "Parker, step aside. I haven't arrested you out of respect for Gwen. Don't stop me from doing my job!"
"No, Mr. Stacy."
Peter still tried to explain.
But Ned had no interest in arguing. He didn't plan to fight crime anytime soon anyway, so he directly commanded Little AI to pilot the Iron Suit into the sky and fly toward Huang Xiwen's house.
"Fine."
Captain Stacy watched the Iron Suit fly off and didn't say anything more. He turned to Peter, who was still standing there, and asked, puzzled, "Why are you still here?"
"Huh?"
Peter, clueless, let out a confused noise.
"If you don't run, are you waiting for them to come and arrest you? Look at how fast that Iron Man friend of yours fled. You should learn from him!"
Captain Stacy said with frustration.
"Oh, oh, oh! Thank you, Mr. Stacy."
Hearing Captain Stacy's words, Peter finally reacted. He picked up the Spider-Man mask that had fallen to the ground, shot a webline, and swung away, disappearing from Captain Stacy's sight in no time.
Swinging between skyscrapers, Spider-Man's speed was no less than that of Iron Man's suit at non-maximum velocity.
Watching Spider-Man disappear, Captain Stacy calmly aimed his gun at Connors on the ground and said, "Doctor, you didn't see anything, right?"
"Of course."
Connors smiled reassuringly and said, "Captain Stacy wants to arrest Spider-Man, but Spider-Man didn't care at all and fled with his webs while the Captain was cuffing the criminal Connors."
"You truly are my daughter's former mentor—so clever. I'll try my best to make things easier for you while you're under my watch."
Captain Stacy smiled, holstered his gun, stepped forward, cuffed Connors' ankles, and then used his radio to call his team to clean up the scene.
"Captain Stacy is just too much!"
At home, Huang Xiwen, who had been watching the events unfold, said indignantly.
"This is normal. He's a police officer; of course, he wouldn't like people like me and Peter," Ned said indifferently. "And in this world without alien threats, freaks like us wouldn't be welcome anyway."
"You two are not freaks!"
Huang Xiwen replied earnestly after hearing Ned's words.
"Uh... yes, I'm perfectly normal."
Ned nodded.
"But it's such a pity about Dr. Connors," Huang Xiwen suddenly said regretfully. "He's one of the leading biologists in all of New York, maybe even the entire United States."
"Is that so?"
Ned, who was far from an academic, showed no interest. Perhaps the original Ned was a genius, capable of hacking Stark's systems, but the current Ned, having crossed into this world, was no longer the same.
"Of course!"
Huang Xiwen said with admiration, "Gwen was even his student once. I was so envious back then."
"Uh... okay."
Seeing Huang Xiwen's envious expression, Ned said, "Maybe someday I'll introduce you to another expert in biology."
"Oh? Ned, you know a biologist?"
Huang Xiwen asked in surprise.
"Uh…"
Ned didn't know what to say. Just then, Little AI, now back in phone form, flew in through the window. Ned pointed at it and said, "Do you think I could create something like this?"
"Sir, Little AI reminds you that Little AI is not just 'something.'"
"…"
"Oh my gosh..."
Aunt May covered her mouth in shock as she saw Peter return home battered and bruised.
"I'm so sorry."
Peter quietly pulled out the eggs he had promised to buy for Aunt May but had forgotten earlier. He walked up to her and hugged her tightly.
"You need to stay away from that guy."
Unlike the warm, harmonious scenes in Ned and Peter's homes, Gwen's home was filled with awkward tension.
Captain Stacy, who had just brought Gwen home, said sternly, "That guy is too dangerous. I won't allow you to continue being with him."
Gwen ignored Captain Stacy, instead heading to the fridge to grab something to eat.
"Hey, Gwen!"
Captain Stacy pulled Gwen aside and said, "Danger surrounds that guy, and everyone close to him gets dragged into it. I've seen too many cases like this, so you're absolutely not allowed to see him anymore!"
"No."
Gwen looked at Captain Stacy and calmly uttered a single word before turning to watch TV.
"Then I'll arrest him and make sure he can't go around causing trouble in that tight suit."
Captain Stacy's voice turned cold at Gwen's refusal.
"Hey!"
Gwen thought Captain Stacy was going too far.
"Listen, I won't let you have anything to do with him again, no matter what it takes."
Captain Stacy said seriously.
"Then I will stay with him, no matter what dumb ideas you come up with to stop me."
Leaving these words behind, Gwen headed to her room.
Bang!
Hearing the door slam, Mrs. Stacy frowned and looked at Captain Stacy.
"George, what is going on? Were you talking about Peter? I think he's a pretty decent kid."
"You have no idea what's going on."
Captain Stacy, clearly irritated, left this remark before heading to bed. Of course, he had no intention of revealing to anyone that Spider-Man was Peter Parker.
