Marvel: I Started by Containing SCPs

Chapter 258: Chapter 258

Agent Hill hadn't expected Cain to cooperate so readily.

She had seen the on-screen analysis and knew that Cain was no ordinary person—his powers were extraordinary.

If Cain had chosen to resist, with his ability to reflect any damage, capturing him would have been impossible.

Hill had been genuinely worried about what might happen if Cain refused. But now, her concerns evaporated.

"Hey, why are you going with them? These government agencies are nothing but trouble!" Bruce Banner shouted anxiously at Cain. He didn't fully understand Cain's situation, but he knew all too well how government organizations operated.

At the same time, Banner couldn't help but wonder: who was Cain, and why was the government so interested in him?

"I have to go with them. My existence isn't exactly friendly to this world," Cain replied with a helpless shake of his head.

"Huh?"

Banner was baffled, even more confused now, unable to grasp what Cain was implying.

"Do you have a piece of paper?" Cain asked, turning to Hill.

"Uh… yes, I do."

Hill retrieved a piece of paper from her gear and handed it to Cain.

Cain took it, and at that moment, something incredible happened.

The paper turned yellow and rotted instantly, crumbling into dust and scattering in the wind.

Everyone, including Banner and Hill, was stunned by the sight.

"What did you do?"

Banner's eyes widened in amazement, trying to track the paper fragments as they drifted away. His scientific mind failed to provide an explanation for what he had just witnessed.

"This is my anomaly. Anything I touch that relies on soil-based life—or is made from it—will wither and decay instantly," Cain explained with a shrug.

"You could say I'm nature's nemesis. Anywhere I go, this phenomenon occurs, causing immense destruction. I have to stay in a place devoid of anything derived from soil-based life. This world simply can't accommodate me."

Cain's explanation sounded profoundly lonely and tragic, yet his tone was calm, as though he had long since come to terms with it.

"That's… unbelievable," Banner muttered, at a loss for words.

He had never imagined that this seemingly polite and amicable man could possess such a devastating ability.

Cain's powers could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity—crop failures, ecological disasters, and more. These thoughts raced through Banner's mind, and he realized the enormity of Cain's predicament.

Indeed, as Cain had said, the world couldn't bear his existence.

It was a cruel and isolating reality.

Banner's gaze softened with sympathy.

He had always thought his own plight—transforming into a giant, green monster—was miserable enough.

But compared to Cain, Banner's struggles seemed less severe. At least he could lead a relatively normal life if he managed his emotions. Cain, however, had no such option.

"So, what are you going to do?" Banner asked, glancing at Hill, skeptical of her intentions.

"Don't worry. If they understand the gravity of the situation, they won't do anything rash. Besides, there's nothing they can do to me," Cain replied, unconcerned.

"Banner, your situation isn't the worst. Trust me. You still have a lot to live for. Don't drown yourself in despair," Cain added, his words striking a chord with Banner.

Banner fell silent, lost in thought. He had been running away from his problems, avoiding both the present and the future. What should he do now?

Sensing the heavy atmosphere, Hill cleared her throat, attempting to shift the focus. She intended to get Cain on the aircraft first, but as for Banner…

Director Fury had already set his sights on the Hulk's immense strength, believing it could be invaluable in dealing with anomalies. Hill needed to find a way to persuade Banner to come along—preferably without provoking the Hulk.

Maybe Cain could help convince him. The two seemed to have developed some rapport.

"Congratulations. Agent Hill has successfully contained Cain," an electronic voice announced from the screen, declaring Cain's containment successful. The system credited Hill for the achievement since she had been the one to cuff Cain.

["Now issuing a random reward to Agent Hill, sourced from a different universe. Reward determined: Reality-Warping Cat."]

As the announcement ended, a black cat suddenly appeared at Hill's feet.

The cat lay down lazily, its yellow eyes curiously observing Hill.

"Reality-Warping Cat?"

Hill crouched down, puzzled.

It looked like an ordinary, albeit adorable, black cat. What could "reality-warping" mean?

"Is this my new owner? Not bad, not bad. You're quite pleasing to the eye," a deep, slightly aged male voice echoed in Hill's mind just as she was about to pet the cat.

"Who said that?" Hill asked, startled, looking around at the others.

Her teammates exchanged confused glances, clearly as baffled as she was.

"Hey, isn't that the little cat? Long time no see," Cain greeted the black cat as though they were old friends.

"Indeed, it's been a while. I didn't expect to meet you here. Getting locked up again, I see?"

Hill heard the voice again, and seeing Cain interact with the cat, she pieced it together.

"Was that you speaking to me?" she asked, staring at the cat in shock.

"Technically, it's telepathy—a minor trick," the cat replied, its voice calm.

"From now on, you're my owner. Feed me well, and I'll make sure you stay safe," the cat added, rubbing affectionately against Hill's leg.

Hill blinked, utterly bewildered. She couldn't wrap her head around what was happening.

["Reality-Warping Cat is one of the many controllable anomalies under containment. It possesses the ability to warp reality within a 30-meter radius, transforming living beings into other objects or creatures. It also has telepathic abilities."]

["According to research, the Reality-Warping Cat can only alter living beings, not inanimate objects or itself. Any changes are temporary and will revert after the target moves beyond the cat's influence for an hour."]
