Marvel: Hunter

Chapter 127: Wings

"It's over."

Blaine hung up the phone and looked at Spider-Man. "Shall we go?"

"Yeah! Let's go!"

Spider-Man nodded, then asked suspiciously, "But how are you going to get there? Are you swinging like me?"

"No, no. Swinging over? That's too slow."

Blaine shook his head, leaped into the air, and a gust of wind rose beneath him. Two green, translucent wings formed behind his back.

With a single flap, his speed instantly broke the sound barrier.

A sharp "boom" echoed in the air—the sonic boom shaking the surroundings as Blaine rocketed toward Manhattan like a cannonball.

He wasn't planning to wait for Spider-Man.

The sooner this was dealt with, the better. Naturally, he intended to move as fast as possible.

If you're asking about the fastest route—of course it's by flying at Mach speeds.

Running would mean weaving through countless buildings.

A straight line is the shortest path. Running along rooftops was too uneven and far too slow.

Fortunately, he had learned magic from Gali that he could now use himself.

If Galactus had arrived earlier, he wouldn't have had the chance to learn anything. His copy-eye ability would've been wasted. Kamar-Taj was the only place on Earth where magic could truly be mastered.

Blaine didn't believe they would have welcomed him at Kamar-Taj if he'd just barged in uninvited.

After all, he'd made quite a mess on Earth lately. The Ancient One, as Sorcerer Supreme, had certainly taken notice.

She wouldn't have killed him—but accepting him as a student? Very unlikely.

So the moment he awakened his copy-eye, he'd gone straight to Gali to study magic. If he'd had less money, he wouldn't have gotten in; if he'd waited any longer, Galactus would've taken her.

"Unbelievable…"

Spider-Man stared at the spot where Blaine had vanished.

What just happened?

Wings? He could fly?

What the heck? Just a second ago, the guy was giving Assassin's Creed vibes—and now it's full-on Western fantasy magic? Those are two totally different genres!

"Hey! Wait for me!"

Spider-Man shouted and swung after him, frustrated.

He had two thoughts now:

First, fight aliens.

Second, catch up to that guy and ask how he did that—and if he could make wings for him, too!

In Manhattan—

The Avengers were engaged in a fierce battle.

In truth, the Chitauri weren't all that strong individually. At best, they could bully ordinary civilians. But the Avengers? Each one was among the most powerful beings on Earth.

Still, it didn't matter how weak the individual soldiers were—there were a lot of them.

An entire army.

And only a handful of Avengers.

"Ugh!"

Steve decapitated a Chitauri soldier with his shield. For the moment, the immediate area was clear.

"Huff… huff…"

A distant roar echoed above. A black speck quickly grew larger—it was Thor.

He landed with a thunderous crash. Though his descent was rough and he stumbled slightly, he quickly stabilized himself using the wreckage of a nearby taxi.

"What's the situation up there?" Steve asked.

Thor walked toward them and answered, "The energy surrounding the Tesseract can't be breached."

The wormhole had been opened using the energy from the Tesseract. If they wanted to stop the invasion, they'd need to find a way to pierce that energy shield and cut off the Tesseract's self-sustaining power.

Once the wormhole closed, the Chitauri forces would be trapped on Earth, and at that point—dealing with them would just be a matter of time.

Unfortunately… they hadn't figured out how to shut the Tesseract down yet.

Probably the only one who knew how—was Loki.

"You think Loki's going to tell us?" came Tony's voice over the comms. "Right now, we need to handle what's in front of us."

"What do we do?" Natasha asked, uncertain.

"Teamwork," Steve said. "Avengers."

"I still have unfinished business with Loki," Thor exhaled. "We must capture him."

"Yeah?" Barton said, notching an explosive arrow. "Get in line. Everyone here's got a score to settle with him…"

"Alright," Steve said, stepping into leadership mode. "Loki's going to throw everything he's got at us. Take him down, and the rest will fall apart."

"Stark is in the air. He's going to need us."

Steve truly earned his title.

Maybe he couldn't match Tony when it came to technology, but in terms of tactics and battlefield awareness, Captain America was miles ahead of everyone else.

After all, let's be honest—one Avenger was a scientist, two were assassins, and one was a literal god. Steve was the only one with real war experience and deep strategic insight.

But just as he was about to speak again, a motorcycle engine revved suddenly and loudly across the battlefield.

Everyone turned toward the sound and saw Banner—clothes dusty and worn—riding a small, half-broken motorcycle toward them at top speed.

The Avengers exchanged glances and ran forward to meet him.

"This looks bad," Banner said, waving a hand as he surveyed the chaos.

"I've seen worse…" Natasha replied, looking at him with meaning.

"Sorry," Banner muttered, understanding her unspoken message. But there was no time for explanations—only action.

"No—we need worse," Natasha said with a small, knowing smile.

"Stark, we've found him," Steve said into his comms.

"Banner?" Tony asked. "Or the Hunter?"

"Banner," Steve confirmed.

Banner?

Tony had expected Blaine to show up next, but Banner's arrival was just as welcome.

Either way, it was good news.

"Tell him to get ready—the party's about to start," Tony said.

Just as he finished speaking, he appeared at the end of the street.

And right behind him was a hundred-meter-long Chitauri leviathan, pursuing him relentlessly.
