The office was the same as yesterday.
Only Arthur and Fury were inside.
"You won," Fury began straightforwardly. "I don't know how you did it, but you taught us all a very vivid lesson."
"Thank you."
Arthur adjusted his posture slightly, making himself more comfortable before speaking. "Honestly, there's no need to be so tense. Whatever I'm capable of, at least I haven't acted on it."
"And that's why we can sit here today," Fury replied. "Now, you're the winner. Name your demands."
A smile played on Arthur's lips. "Are you sure you're ready to hear my demands?"
"What do you mean?" Fury's expression became more complex.
...
Arthur and Fury talked in the room for about two hours before they finally stepped out.
Natasha had been leaning against the wall the whole time. When she saw him coming out, she blocked his way. "The negotiations are over?"
"We just set some ground rules," Arthur shrugged. "At the very least, I want to keep the peace with all of you."
"But by using force to achieve it?"
"That comment really shows how naive you are," Arthur chuckled. "You're not that naive, are you?"
Natasha pursed her lips slightly. "Flexing your muscles to show Fury the consequences of crossing you, then sitting down as a peacemaker to make a deal. It's a mature approach... although very bold."
"I just don't want to be disturbed," Arthur smiled. "For now, all is well. We've come to an 'interesting' agreement."
"Interesting?" Natasha considered the word before shaking her head. "Is that all?"
"You think I didn't ask for enough? What did you expect me to ask for?" Arthur looked back at the office and smiled again. "He must have been pretty shaken up last night, huh?"
"Yeah, he was sweating so much he almost washed himself clean."
"Too bad I didn't take it further," Arthur shrugged.
"There's someone who wants to meet you," Natasha said, her expression becoming more serious. "Are you willing?"
Arthur paused for a moment, then nodded. "Of course, I've been looking forward to it..."
...
Once again, Black Widow was driving. She seemed to have almost forgotten her duties as an agent, acting more like a personal chauffeur.
Arthur looked out of the window, resting his chin on his hand in silence.
He already had a good idea who he would meet.
When he first went to the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility, it was Natasha who had sent him outand she had even helped him. The person who gave the order was most likely the one he was about to see.
The car ride was quiet, Arthur stared out the window without saying a word, and Natasha occasionally glanced at him through the rearview mirror.
Finally, the car stopped at a heavily guarded base, in front of a nondescript building.
After getting out of the car, Arthur stood in front of the building and took a deep breath as he looked at it and then at Natasha standing on the steps. He exhaled deeply and shook his head slightly. "This is a little more difficult than I thought..."
Natasha was surprised. "I thought you were fearless."
"Only with fear in your heart can you still go on," Arthur exhaled quietly. "Even those a hundred times stronger than me can't be truly fearless, so how could I?"
Natasha was silent for a moment, but then her gaze shifted slightly to Arthur. She smiled. "Go to her. She's... wanted to meet you for a long time."
"So have I. It's time I see her."
Arthur's expression calmed as he followed Natasha into the building.
The elevator stopped on the seventh floor. The quiet hallway with its soft colors was surprisingly relaxing.
Natasha led the way, and suddenly Arthur asked, "How long have you been at her side?"
For the first time, the usually composed Black Widow faltered slightly. She didn't turn around or answer as she stopped in front of a door. "Here you go."
Arthur shook off his thoughts, looked at the doorknob, took a deep breath, grabbed it, and turned it open.
Compared to the negotiations with Fury, Arthur found this door much harder.
As he stepped inside, a familiar interior met his eyes. The room was styled after something from seventy years ago, in stark contrast to the high-tech world outside.
A window was open and a breeze blew through, causing the curtains to rustle...
Arthur's eyes fell on the bed where a woman lay.
Her hair was completely white, and the sound of the door seemed to have awakened her. She slowly raised her head and looked at Arthur.
Her eyes were clouded with age, but somehow she recognized him instantly. In a weak voice she asked, "Is the world... at peace?"
"Too many people hope that this world will never find peace," Arthur replied as he came closer. "And some, in their mission for some peace, have tried more than once to plunge the world back into chaos and war."
Standing before her now, Arthur looked at the older, almost unrecognizable face of **Peggy Carter** and tugged at the corners of his mouth in a faint smile. "Long time no see..."
...
...
Natasha stood in the hallway, her mind wandering back to scenes long ago.
Moments, flickering like drops of water, merged into a river. But the passage of time had blurred the images.
At some point, the sound of a door opening brought her back to the present. She looked over to see Arthur standing in the doorway.
"Finished talking?" Natasha composed herself, keeping her expression calm.
"There wasn't much more to say," Arthur said, looking at her. "Maybe it wasn't too hard for me. But for her, I'm just a memory from her youth."
Natasha was silent for a moment before she replied, "You've always meant something to her. She's lived her whole life and for her you were like a shadow over her, influencing her every decision."
Arthur thought for a moment, then shook his head. "Whatever I once meant to her, it doesn't matter anymore. She deserves to rest. Now... can you take me somewhere?"
"Of course."
Natasha led the way. "You're right. She's endured a lot for a long time. She deserves a peaceful ending."
Arthur said nothing as they made their way downstairs and got into the car. "I need to meet someone— **Colonel Phillips**."
